If your goal is just to be able to speak the language, then I think one should go with Pimsleur. If your goal is to be able to read and write the language too, then I think Rosetta stone is the better choice. Thanks for this informative video!

RosettaStone got my vote. I may have only tried 1 lesson to learn Chinese in Pims, but it doesnt show options for lifetime subscription and all languages like RosettaStone. Plus, RosettaStone makes you learn in that language matching picture recognition instead of using English as a crutch. AND RosettaStone has the option to learn to read and write the language too.

I've used both and love both. 1) Started with Rosetta Stone (~80-hour course) over a period of around 3 months and that got me to around beginner A2 (in reading and listening) with a solid vocab of around ~1200-1500 words. 2) Then did about a year of comprehensible input training (reading and watching videos w/subtitles in target language) to include a 1-year subscription to Lingo Pie that got me to maybe beginner B1 level (reading and listening, and A2 speaking, with a total vocab of probably around 4000 known words) and then 3) did about 120 hours of Pimsleur which basically got me to ~B1 (in speaking). This took me about 4 months. Now I'm at the point I keep practicing the audio portion of the advanced lessons (the last 20 lessons) in Pimsleur -- just to get that repetition in (really solidify that B1 in speaking) -- and am at the point that just by reading, watching videos, listening to audio, and speaking, I hope to get to around ~B2 in a year or maybe a year and a half -- and then just keep going -- maybe even C1 in a few years after I reach B2. 🙏
The nice thing about doing Pimsleur was that I didn't have to deal with learning very many new words when I did Pimsleur -- I could focus purely on speaking and sentence structure and really getting words from my passive vocabulary into my active vocabulary. Pimsleur is gold for speaking. Could barely say anything before Pimsleur and now I can easily hold basic comfortable conversations.
So yeah -- love both! My two favorite language programs. I think Rosetta is better to start with (and for reading and listening) - love the total immersion and the visual style of learning, and Pimsleur IMO is the king for learning how to speak. Without Pimsleur I'm not sure if I would have ever learned how to speak -- unless I moved to the target language country! 😂

Appreciate the thorough review of Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone. Pimsleur sounds like the better choice, more native type conversation. I would like to improve my Spanish language skills for business purposes. Thanks.

I've used a beginning Pimsleur series of lessons for a little while on Audible, and I do like the audio training part. The use of English in some of the instructions seems to be helpful. I think you are right about choosing Pimsleur over Rosetta Stone.

Thanks for the info! Pimsleur sounds pretty good, thinking that may be the route. Especially with being able to have up to 4 concurrent users on it. I'm thinking that doing the free Duo Lingo lessons as well as the Pimsleur lessons daily would help with the less visual aspect of Pimsleur.

I was struggling to decide which one to use to learn Spanish. My kids were traumatized with Rosetta Stone when I made them learn Vietnamese ( my native tongue- but I cannot read or write it). Pimsleur Vietnamese they learned in 3 weeks what they didn’t learn in 10 yrs. I’m going with your recommendation & doing Pimsleur for Spanish. Too bad Pimsleur won’t update Vietnamese via online access or levels other than Level 1 from decades ago. If you have a recommendation for me to read & write Vietnamese I would appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing Fawn! Appreciate hearing about your experience. The issue is that not many apps cover Vietnamese. It's really just Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone and Duolingo. And frankly I don't think Duolingo or Rosetta Stone are great for learning to read or write...

idk, I feel like language learning fails to teach how people actually speak.
Like in french class they're like this is how you say "hello fellow comrade, my name is .... And I'm very pleased to meet your acquaintance. At this present point in time how is your current emotional state?".
Instead of just saying "yo, what's up?".
