Man, your analogy to lifting free weights vs a machine is spot on in regards to playing a Speed King. I always thoroughly enjoy your breakdowns, Terry! Thanks so much for this!
Used to happen all the time, but it was a Rogers Swiv-o-matic! I've moved to Speed Kings and have a couple of refurbished one and they're great - and just ordered the new one 'cause I like the drum key tightener for the beater!
Ginger Baker talked about tucking his bell bottoms in his sock, or he would get a rubber band and “cuff” the trousers so the beater wouldn’t get caught in them.
Watching you play on the new and vintage Speed Kings certainly brings back a lot of great memories. Those “clinks” and “pings” are music to my ears! You have inspired me to purchase a new Speed King. As always, thanks for another excellent video!
I have two speed kings both from mid sixties. Love playing them. I also have a iron cobra double pedal I’ve been playing for a few years and I’m constantly making a lot of adjustments because I’m not comfortable with it no matter how I adjust it. Ludwig should make a double speed king.
I've had several Speed Kings and took them apart cleaned and re greased them and they worked perfect and didn't make any noise. Just grease the moving parts and it really quiets them down.
I’ve owned a couple of speed kings over the years and they are my favorite pedal, squeak not withstanding. I got one of these last summer and it’s the best investment I made in a long, long time. Supposedly they have modified the design to eliminate the source of the squeak.
As a young drummer (24) I was intentionally ignorant to original speed king pedals (due to pride and likely repair of the contraption). I proudly used Camco and Yamaha pedals as it gave me that fix of using the pedal and having proper control and rebound. Getting the Speed King after all these years made it worth putting in the work and time in terms of foot control.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the new Speedflyer pedals as well! I'm still not too sure, what the advantage would be compared to a good old Speed King, except for it being "more modern".
Fantastic Terry! the speed king is the only pedal I can play on! I've tried several other pedals none of them were the same, speed kings have a unique feel to them.
Dude. You’re videos are awesome. I can’t get enough of your videos, Led Zep music, and Bonham’s drumming. Zep and Bonham inspired me to start playing the drums in the first place. I recently stumbled upon the Zildjian s thin crashes and fell in love with them as much as you did. They just have that right sound. The first time I heard them I said that’s it. The paiste cymbals sound awesome too but the prices always turned me off. The zildjian s thin crashes have inspired me to get back into drumming. I recently got the s 22 medium ride, s thin crash 16, s hi hats to start. S 18 and 20 thin crash next on the list. Trying to make my mediocre playing and shoddy tuning on the old beat up craigslist mapex kit in my basement sound like bonham has led me down the youtube tuning drumming like bonham zildjian s thin crash rabbit hole where i stumbled upon your videos. I am considering a ludwig zep kit. Any thoughts? Also I am in nw indiana. Do you tune drums and give lessons? I want to sound like you and bonham do. I also have a pearl pedal my wife bought a few years back. It has similar features to dw 5000. Is dw 5000 way better still? Please keep the videos coming.
Looking and sounding great Terry. I still have both of vintage Ludwig speed kings that my pal reconditioned a couple of years ago. Glad that Ludwig reissued the speed king. Cool review.
You ripped those glasses off so cleanly, better than any movie/tv show I’ve ever seen!😂 I could watch that over and over on loop and laugh till I fart, because it is so awesome and so awesomely hilarious!!! Love the little things pal we are so much alike.😂❤♥️
I bought one of the later era Chicago pedals in 2009 and it also had a more solid/strict feel to it than any vintage one, less bouncy. There were plastic sleeves over all the metal-on-metal moving parts.

This guy is every crazy drum teacher I've ever known and I'm here for it 🤣 It makes me think of a lesson I had where we were going over snare tuning and my teacher was all like "Yeah you're snare is giving a real 'thwooshy' sound. It sounds all 'thwoosh thwoosh thwoosh' when what you really want a 'PAH PAH PAH' sound so I really want you to crank up anything that turns on your snare. All of the pegs both top and bottom and also the snare tightening thingy on the throwoff." It is stuff like that which reminds me why drums is the most fun to learn. Whilst other musicians are learning about embouchure and transposed notation we are all like "Bang Bang it's a drum! Tune it so it sounds good and learn to hit it without hurting yourself"

Or, as anyone who has been burned by Ludwig calls it: WHAT warranty?!

I played my Speed King after using various other pedals for awhile and the quickness was noticeable. It definitely has a unique feel. And perfect for my mid 60s Ludwig kit.
I played a speed king from 1970 - until the disappeared. Yes..they could be noisy but all of us who used them knew all the treats to keep it quiet. There has never been a pedal since that used duel springs. Not only did they use two springs, but there were reversed! (upside down) in comparison to other pedals. I couldn't agree more as to their feel and ultimately their power but it did take a bit more doing to get used to it. At first it is like learn to play guitar with a very high action. At first it is very difficult but over time ..and as the action get down to a better height you find you can just fly. Speed Kings are just like that. I used to really tension them with more resistance than I normally would and just start woodshedding. It didn't take long to build up tremendous strength and endurance and ultimately more speed. Since my Speed King days I have tried everything! DW 5000, 9000, the Sonor DP-4000 (Jo Jo Mayer) pedal, Tama Iron Cobra (all models), Tama Speed Cobra, Pedal Demon, Pearl Eliminator (chain and belt), Yamaha Flying Dragons...and finally settled on the Pearl Redline Eliminator as it was the closest to the natural foot pedal angle and was one of the only pedals that had both speed and power built in. But it was never the same. I need to get a new Speed King and go back "home" as it was perfect for all those early years and I suspect it will be once again. (and less noisy this time).
@@bonzoleum Terry, that Camco has an "old world" vibe to it as well. More modern pedals are too bulky, over adjustable and simply not as useful as many of the older original pedals. Can't wait to try the new Speed King.
Hey Terry! I agree with you "wholelottaloveheartedly" I bought 2 last summer and couldn't be happier with the build and feel. They're as quick as my old early 80s Tama/Camco strap drive pedal, which is another great pedal IMO. ☮❤🥁

We really need a NOS 60s 70s, at the latest, speed king to properly compare, because the new one feels more firm due to it being brand new. Let’s see what that Chinese pedal looks & plays like in 20/30 years. And I’m just being fair to the originals. Of course, I’ve never played a brand new SPKG, being born in mid-70s.

I got the reissue and use the springs off my old one. Much better feel
Hey T. Could be on my end, but most of the audio was only coming through my left ear bud.. maybe your audio panning was adjusted left or right? Shite... idk. Anyways! Always happy to see ya T! Mox!!
The audio sounded fine through my ears, it might be your speakers
Ah yes- my settings were set that way accidntally Spnce.
I have the ultimate upgrade to keep the posts from spreading. Unfortunately I can't post a photo.
Great review by Mike Patton of Mr. Bungle. When is the new album coming out?
Getting my act together here. I'll keep you abreast.
what about for heel down players? i went to a music store to test one out and it’s very nice, but it seems to have no heel support
You and your kit sound like Bonham! COOL
Thanks, Joshuel!
It's all about the action indeed,
that's the main reason to play drums right there. Less is more with pedals.
Yeahhhh Baby ! Keep on Rockin!!! Speed Kings Rule !!!!
Yes, thanks John!
Real drummers don't complain about pains in there arms stoooop ITT 💪👹👊
We should all be as Real as this drummer.
My 1st pedal was a vintage "Squeak king" mid 90s.Then got a pearl that sucked, got a DW 5000 which is good, but its a tank and I just have to go back to the original "new and improved" version,to go with my Bop kit.Hopefully last pedal ever.🤖🛸
Are you still selling those drum sticks?
Getting more in soon.
How do you set your spring tension?
I would like to know more about that too!
I just find the quick triplets difficult with my speed cobras, the dw 9000 are just too clunky. Where can I get these, I'm in Ireland.
These guys I think can hook you up: www.drumcenternh.com/ludwig-speed-king-bass-drum-pedal
@@bonzoleum thanks Terry, i wonder what a double drum pedal version would be like? love the new look dude.
Great video. What spring tension do you like and what did bonzo use.
Not sure what Bonham used- I like it medium on a SK.
How do you adjust the spring tension ? More on the loose side , medium or....?
I’d say 40 percent of the tightest it will go.
Classic Bonham sound
Going to have to sell my Pearl Eliminator pedal and get myself
a new Speed King now
YES
I"m 61. I bought and played a 'series' of these...in my youth ( hmm?...'mid 70's...to maybe...1981 or so...when i moved up to some form of 'early DW' rig) I want another one; and get this.... "then...they were around $50 bucks...New. ( mid/late 70's) Now?.... just saw one on Amazon....$300. they can go pound sand. Ridiculous. But i'll keep looking. I think Guitar Center may have 'em for the 'high 1's...or around 2 bills. even 'that...is stupid. But these things...are amazing. God...i hate this modern era...of overpriced everything..
Im using an old Slingerland super speed
Agreed! A+
is it a natural room sound?
Hi Pavel -yes it is.
Yeah, looking dapper. 👌 sounding solid. see you Thursday.......!
I like your new look Terry.
Holy schmoly, I made it through a full video not swearing at your choice of shirt LoL And the sound on this one stuck out, for me and my perforated ear drums at least.
