I think you mean "blessing".
That's kind of the theme of the game right? Don't get too attached to these characters because they will get stressed out, accumulate lots of diseases and quirks, so you're going to have to ditch them at some point.

Battlefield Medicine has saved more of my Heroes from dying than even Vestals, with her high speed and small heal plus the cure she can give someone a second chance, by healing them before they even get to roll their Deathblow's resist roll.

Just wanted to reiterate a concern with the averages. It is minor but you make characters who have below average stats seem more average when you include the antiquarians stats in the baseline.
I actually love the PD in the Weald simply due to the sheer value of Battlefield Medicine against all the high Blight and medium Bleed effects saturating every run in that blasted place.
Plague Doc is a fun class. Pretty much limited to the Cove and Ruins, but she runs very well with the Abomination and Occultist. Plague Grenade is amazing combined with the Abom's bile.
Emboldening vapors are really useful. It's great if you stack it on somebody who already has buffs on them.
Recently, I was fighting drowned crew. Bounty hunter had the planned takedown active, plus unholy hater, and then got a virtue. I used emboldening vapors twice, and combined with marks, I had him dealing 30+ damage per turn.
I think the most fun is blitzing necro with PDs and lepers
My experience with the Plague Doctor and Crimson Court enemies is amazing. The new item dazzling mirror essentially guarentees she will go first and you have the ability to stun lock the back 2 ranks 3 times in a row if you bring another stun chance item which you should always do anyway. There is only one enemy that seems to be stun immune. Swapping out noxious blast for disorienting blast makes these new enemies far easier to manage.
For the Crimson Court DLC roaming mobs, I bring Emboldening Vapours so that one of my strong damage dealers is more likely to go first, as well as 1-shot the mobs. Gives the enemy less chances to ruin one of my good characters before I am ready to lift the Veil and cure everyone.
That's actually not a bad idea for it. Shame the speed buff doesn't activate until next round, but considering the Crimson Court mobs seem to be top tier in the "ONE GODDAMN HP ARE YOU KIDDING ME" ranks, I can see this working.
I love pairing the GR with the PD; GR usually 1-shots an enemy every other turn with lunge while the rest of the team can focus on utility or heals. Those fights basically have the recovery phase intermingled with the combat and feel smoother
PD's camping skills are badass. most times when the party already got good upgrades with good party skill synergy (ie : if you reach the last room right next to boss room with minimal stress and HP damage), buffs/stress heals usually aren't even necessary to beat the boss. (most vets already memorized attack patterns of the bosses and already figured out how to beat it, even with minimal camp prepping)
so during those scenarios, PD's disease cures and antiquarian's trinket scavenge lets the players bring home "permanent" boons. (ie : free trinkets/free disease cures) rather than just temporary buffs given by other camp skills.
I personally think emboldening vapors with a highway man can be quite helpful. The plague doctor usually going first means a nice damage buff on the highway man. The highway man uses pointblank shot on the first enemy and will usually kill it knocking him back. Then you can use the highway man to activate duelists advance hitting anyone you want to for not amazing damage but activating a riposte which will do a lot of damage. Then you just rinse and repeat. I've found quite a lot of success using this set up with a few different other classes mixed in there too.
I kinda want to see a team comp that revolves all around focusing a single hero for the most part with like MAA riposte, Antiquarian guard on MAA, MAA guard on PD, and some other class to probably heal like a Vestal or something.
I feel like you could make it semi-viable due to how much protection you can stack on the MAA with a lot of healing increases stacked as well, then if he gets a lot of DOTs stacked PD can clear them for free.
Your videos are SO methodical and logical and well-argued. I can’t really ever find a flawed or weak or lazy argument. Good stuff!
If you want a hybrid build with incision for the crimson court mobs replace your noxious blast instead of your stun because they both are single target front rank damage attacks so you lose less versitility than if you abandon either stun.
PD with Hag's Ladle and one of either the blasphemous vial, poisonous herb, or just the blight charm if you have built the Athenaeum district, will burn through almost every mob's blight resist. I've even beaten the 2nd Darkest Dungeon with PD as the main damage dealer on the templars (with Man at Arms guarding the PD who has no torch).
I've always gone Incision > 2 bombs of choice > Diso-blast. Naturally I sometimes go for Bat-Med due to it being the perfect life-saver. The incision bleed is pitiful, even if stacked onto bleeds from others, but with the amount of shuffling (and the fact she loves rank 3), there's no harm having some on-demand up-front damage if needed from 3/4 ranks, plus you can never guarantee what spawns will be -blight resistant. I've also used her a hell of a lot with the +melee damage court trinket + the bundle of flowers that improves her melee/bleed damage. At times she was slapping things harder than some standard DPS. It's not optimal, of course, but you either a) want to stick two fingers up at the meta or b) be capable of handling blight-res mobs without feeling wasted, so a good hybrid build will see you through those constant situations where court mobs are spawning in your non-court dungeons.
On top of that, I do love shuffling backliners into the front with diso-blast, especially certain ones who may get a turn, but be restricted to far inferior abilities eg. Crossbow skeletons being reduced to their backdash melee move rather than spewing quarrels into the squishies at the back. Failing that, you don't always have people up front who can hit beyond rank 2, so the shuffle + corpse clear can help them out quite a lot. There's tonnes of examples of this, but I won't argue it's not the strongest arrangement of her abilities.
I found that with Incision she kind of becomes a citing monster.

There is one scenario I can think of where the +healing strat would be viable and that is against Wuulf. The best strat I've seen against him is having a man at arms guard whoever gets targetted with the bomb so Man at arms takes the brunt of the damage. You can reduce the damage by stacking defense and stacking healing would further nullify this.
But of course, sadly, there's no camping before Wuulf so experimental vapours gets no love there.
to be honest, i quite like disorienting blast. you can just use it on high priority targets and get them to melee range, instead of just dealing with them with dots and stuns. Though i understand that your front are usually stress healers so you might disagree with it
One of the best uses I found for the Experimental Vapours is buffing man-at-arms. If you go to the prophet/Vvulf/swine god you can buff the man at arms and using his guard negate almost all the damage from the boss
The most dangerous Bloodsuckers (which s to say Crimson Court monsters) are not particularly resistant to stun. It took quite a few battles before I saw the transformed versions of the Esquire or Courtesan, and you need to stun Chevaliers because of their multi-target mid-damage or single-target high-damage attack.
There's also those damned Gatekeepers, who will scarper after two rounds, inflicting Horror on the party and replacing vacant enemy slots with Sycophants. You can, and should stun those, with their natural dodge of at least 16 classes like the Leper can just whiff enough times for them to bugger off (if you'll pardon the pun).
I use disorienting blast to push 1-2 to unfavorable positions, I usually run PD with an occultist to while out 3-4 in 1st turn (blight tick+abysmal artillery= probably dead back line, plus sometimes I like to push the frontilners back at the start of a fight so they're stuck behind corpses (where you can repeatedly stun them) and I they do get a move, it's a harmless poke or something. Then you just chill and heal for a bit.
Experimental vapors is excellent for tanks that have a self heal(abomination, leper, and crusaders) because it frees up the healer for characters that can't fend for themselves.
Imo there are too many possible combinations in this game to under rate a particular skill or character.

Not sure I agree about throwing the PG instead of stunning in many cases. If you are running a PD you probably aren't fully loading up on back row damage to begin with and it's likely that both the 3rd and 4th row get attacks off before they get killed if you use PG. If you stunned it's more likely in most comps only the back row will get 1 attack (or no attacks if you get a bit lucky with a crit. )

A good point to know, that I wasn't really aware of.
Your Blights (and Bleeds) STACK. I had assumed, wrongly so, that this was not the case. So I'd constantly switch targets with my Blighters and Bleeders. Only had one guy left, put the next Blight Attack on him thinking I'd just get the small Damage.
Well, unlike Bleeds, Blights don't mess around. We're talking 4's and 5's here, not 2's and 3's. So suddenly this dude with 8 HP left after my Attack, was about to eat 10 Blight. I still didn't realize, but as soon as he popped on the screen like a teen-agers pimple I sure did.
So it seems like a basic and simple thing, but for some reason a New Player may be thinking that a Condition Status... which Blight and Bleed would fall under, as would Stun and all the Buff/Debuffs… doesn't stack. I mean if you are Bleeding, how do you Bleed more? If you are diseased (Blighted), how do you get more diseased? Well stop thinking that, and Doctor them with Plague for some Effectively Dead baddies.
And since the Plague Doctor has both a Double Stun on 3/4 and a Double Blight to 3/4, you've got your Artillery Lock Down and your Back Line Assassinations.
I'm not getting very interested in a 2 Doctor Comp, in 3 and 4, just for that. One Double Stuns the back, the other Blights the Back, until there is no Back. The problem then becomes that while I can get ride of Blights and Bleeds, I can't fit a Vestal in. So this might be like a Secondary Party that I use for Loot Grabs while Main Party rests.
Ok. See dots this way. Bleed? You are bleeding out of one cut, then enemie adds another. Blight? Multiple acid burns.
quick question, each or some classes bring specific free items on quests like the antivenom from the plaguedoctor. Is there a list somewhere on who brings what? it can matter because it limits the inventory
The only instance I can think of where stacking healing received could be useful is Vvulf and his bombs
Buff up one character then have him move and sit on the bomb every time, then heal him up quick w/ his healing buffs

I don't know man. I couldn't just let her go even though i noticed her lack of use against bloodsuckers as well. So i would just run the dissection kit and the bloody herbs alongside her incision skill, wich would make her at least a little worthwhile. Still missing blasphemous vials buffs though :(

I haven't played DD ever since i bested it many moons ago. But i recently came back to it, and in the second Crimson Courtyard she is very good against these huge caterpillars sitting on the rocks, i just outstun them completely with her. Good option to avoid these nasty subterranean whatevers and then double rank attacks.
(but maybe i haven't see enough yet of CC..... yet again.... all the mobs i've met in the DLC are pretty easy to stun, 'cept for the one where you have a dude with a huge tick on his head :P He IS hard to stun, hehe!)
hey filthy i know you've already recorded all these but can i humbly request that when looking at skills you have them at a consistent level, maybe level 1 or 5
but it is? They are all at level 3 no ;0?

Midnight if you're gonna compare them for people you should have them on level playing field so that you can make a valid comparison stat wise.
Filthy, what you didn't consider (or didn't mention having considered it) when saying Plague Doctor is subpar in the CC content is the fact that despite of the Supplicants being basically Stun Immune, there are other high-priority, backline enemies in Crimson Court that have VERY LOW stun resistance (Chevalier, Esquire, Courtesan), to the point where a Plague Doctor with Blasphemous Vial+Dazzling mirror can stun BOTH the backliners twice or even three times in a row - Twice being reliable, 3 times being luckying out.
That alone makes them great at clearing Courtyard maps (altough they do suck at all bosses and should be replaced for them, and are also weak at heavy supplicant encounters, which really aren't that common). Having the bleed heal just makes it even better.
Single most awesome moment in Darkest Dungeon history: "gimmick"

I beat DD1 on my first attempt pretty handily and I think it's mostly because I had two PDs in the back two ranks. Plague Grenade is actually broken.

Ironic... The Plague Doctor can't heal her allies very well (Refering to HP healed) unless you use the campfire. I think that's why I almost lost my whole team to the Crocodile on the Courtyard. I did not have a reliable healer besides the vestal, which was afflicted.

Plague waifu needs love. I was really saddened to see that CC is blight immune.
I think you should go as a "Stunner/Healer" vs Crimson Court enemies, incision is pretty useless for me. Good video anyway

Highwayman with riposte and point blanc shot boosted with the vapors is a fucking death machine.

His point of view is to kill the backline first, which to do that you’d have to forgo plague grenade or a backline stun to deal with the front ranks. After the backline is dead she can heal your team and remove dots rather than use a relatively unnecessary buff.

Bono Giamboni compared to a full second damage dealer it’s rarely worth it. Good for some long fights, but it’s not great.

I used Incision as a straight damage attack a lot, but, that was with the Bloody Herb.
The Plague Doctor is fantastic in the Courtyard. Only a single trash enemy has really high Stun resist, and they're the lowest priority target. With the right trinkets, the PD can stun Chevaliers three times in a row near consistently. Also you're really over-valuing the doctor's Blight skills. The doctor works best as a stunning class, capable of keeping the backline stagnant as a real ranged class deals with them.
I like the PD, but she has such a focused skill set I never seem to really focus on leveling them.

I was curious to know why you didn't like the final PD ability. You said you'd come back to it after the camping skills and I think you forgot to finish your thoughts on it.
I like the plague doctor for being able to save the healer. Who would have to survive a death door tick to try to save themselves.

I've got to disagree with you on this one. In my opinion Plague Doctor is great even in the courtyard. With the Dazzling Mirror and the Vial she can stun high priority targets like the Chevaliers up to three consecutive turns and will act first every round! This provides hugh amounts of survivability to your group and helps to forego lage parts of the dungeon in on attempt. Though I play her almost exclusively as a stunner with both stunning abilities and the stab instead of the blast. But 210% stun skill chance is nothing to laugh about, even for the Supplicants who are not supposed to be stunned at all.
I have to admit that PD is my favorite class though ^^

Yes. The only reason she's weaker in the Crimson Court is because its unique mobs can appear anywhere and they have very high blight resist and half of them have very high stun resist. Though, Chevaliers are particularly weak to stun, so she's still not awful.
Yes, she is really excellent for Cove since ennemies has low blight resistance and many protection, and is really good for Ruins.
Gentle Ice Sorry if this is a late reply but you can still stun relatively well in Crimson court , I Found the Bounty hunters uppercut to be a lifesaver against the crocodiles and servants .
What are the best ways to work a PD into parties? The issue is that PD works from the back ranks, but healers (except vestal aoe) only work from the back ranks (on PS4 occultist never got the update) AND the two good stress healers can only stress heal from the back ranks. I could use crusader, but then I'm losing a ton of utility and back rank damage from my hellion/MaA or whatever is in my second rank. I could shuffle, but of all the healers and stress healers, the only one who can move without wasting an action is jester, and that only works perfectly if the enemies take the 'right' number of turns to die so that I can Finale and revert to the recovery portion right when there's 1-2 front line enemies left, and it also means PD can't blight/bleed heal during recovery. I could keep my vestal mostly in rank 2, but then I lose my single target heal, my stun, and have to replace my attack that also heals me with the one that doesn't.
PD is my favorite class in the game, but I always feel like I'm sacrificing something to bring them. What do you guys use?
Maybe the vapours are useful when you get shuffled to the front and have characters who move around with their abilities. But then who plans to get shuffled.
I don't get that part at the end: Why would you take Incision on this low damage character, when you can give +29% damage to your best DD (for 3 rounds I assume)? Isn't a total of 87% extra-damage on your best beater better than 100% on your worst (non-blight)?

You are looking at it wrong. it's not the minimum of rounds to high threat targets, its minimum ACTIONS!!! If I start with the stun, you have delayed the game one turn for the backline. This probably means you have a team that is more able to focus on the backline on the second round. Your way increases the average actions the backline has. If you double stun the backline, they may never get to act even once. This is even more true if the PD has a good chance of succeeding in a second round of stuns.

Don't use it for the damage. HP boost and death resistance if things go wrong are decent enough. I sometimes use it on MaA and Flaggelant.

wouldn't it make sense to use emboldening vapors if the enemy is blight/stun resistant? that way you can have her set up with blight, stun, heal, and buff so in fights were blight is good but stun is bad you have blight and heal, in fights were stun is good but blight is bad you have stun and heal, and in the fights were blight and stun are both bad you can heal and buff someone else who can actually spit out some damage. seems like that might be better than adding a mediocre bleed to your skill load out.
if in a fight both stun and blight is bad than why would you bring a PD hahahah its mainly for those exact function, and im purely just talking about DD here without CC. Guess its cos the buff activates on the next round and theres not much point to it in regular fights, i could see it working in boss fights maybe but stacking dots are way better in general anyway. With the incision, guess its just for the mere chance that an enemy has high blight and you gota finish offf somethinyg
I think you underestimate Disorienting Blast a bit, considering the PD has a really high speed he can shuffle really nasty enemies from the backline like a madman into the frontline so that your frontliners who otherwise wouldn't be able to reliably touch him could easily focus him to death before he ever gets an opportunity to stress your party.
It's pretty sad. I used her in almost every run before, but now with the Crimson Court it's not exactly the most useful character.

Ryan Wilson I'm pretty sure you're right. With the Plague Doctor specifically, though, she's often confused for a guy, so it's just a pet peeves for some of us
If you listened closely, at the end when speaking of restrictions he said "she's not religious; she can go anywhere with anyone" so clearly he's aware of it and simply made a generic "he" reference earlier.

With crimson court the only time to realy bring out the plague doctor is at low infestation times.

The other option for dealing with the crimson court DLC is not to buy it.
Even if one individual doesn't buy it, that doesn't alter CC as a consideration to include in an objective evaluation of any character.

I never cared much for the PD. Her damage is meh, her healing is meh, and while her stuns are good, other characters can stun and have more utility. The double back row stun is good, but it’s not enough to make the character good.

loves dots, which require two checks, hates forced movements, which require two checks.
Double standard? maybe.
DoTs deal damage and can prevent reinforcement. Almost all enemies have moves that move them towards their prefered position. Meaning that pulling them forward 2 may only help for 1 turn. Furthermore, enemies in the back are usually faster so at best it is a technically worse stun and at worse it doesnt help at all.
