@@akm9238 I guess you most likely will already have made your decision, but: I know people who use low profile GT1030, GTX1050TI and GTX1650 and all of them use them for 4K playback without any problems. Hoping you can answer a ques I have: I think I need to replace the NIC card since it suddenly is no longer connecting to the internet, yet other computers are. Where is it located, and what brand of NIC card does it take. Thank you.
Are you still working on this problem? You could try a Plugable USB to 2.5G Gigabit Ethernet Adapter into the back of the machine. If you want to get fancy, I recommend a 2.5G Ethernet PCIe 1X card with a low profile bracket and a RJ-45 connector. 2.5G Ethernet means it'll keep up for years to come, and the RJ-45 connector is just the telephone-wire-but-not-looking hole that you plug your internet cable into. In the video, when he talks about a video card, he's pointing to a "16X slot" to put the video card in. Next to that, a little further away from the power box, is a smaller slot. That's where this new NIC would go. You'll remove a little skinny metal plate on the back of the machine; that's where you install your low-profile bracket that you'll attach to the NIC. This will give you the RJ-45 connector sticking out the back of the computer, waiting for internet. Cheers!
@@LesCalvin3 than you for your reply. Figured out it wasn't the computer or NIC card at all. Something was interfering with the internet for that box. But I'll save your comment for future reference.🙏

Nice video! I have a 7040 i7 6700 here and I've upgraded his ram with 2x 3200 Mhz 8 Gb but it can't reach those 3200 Mhz, it got stuck into 2133 MHz, is there a way to make it work properly?
Its really not a performance system, I highly doubt it has any sort of XMP capability, in fact I would be very much surprised if it did, keep in mind these are really reliability oriented, ability to enable XMP would probably introduce a source of decreased reliability
Today I tried installing Ubuntu server software with NVME drive for trying my own cloud storage. I think NVME drive is not compatible with any Linux. I hope I can change to a sata ssd in the M2 connector.
The card you have in the top PCIe slot is a 1X card, and doesn't fill the entire slot. The top slot is a 4X (not a 1X as you stated) with an open end for longer cards, as long as they can work 4X electrically. That said, your recommendation of a 1050 wouldn't be recommended as those are double-height cards, and would have to slot into the 4X slot. While it would fit, and likely work, the 1050 does utilize 8X electrically, and would likely suffer in performance due to the restricted PCIe bandwidth. A GTX 1030 (get GDDR5, not DDR3) would be a better fit, and could slot into the bottom 16X slot as those are mostly single-height cards.
Hi! I know this is old, but I'm trying to learn more about my "new" computer, and computers in general. That 16X slot, does it actually run at 16X? And does it compete for PCIe lanes with the 4X or with NVMe storage? Thanks!
@@LesCalvin3 Sorry for the late reply, YT wasn't sending me notifications. OEMs like HP/Dell, etc tend to only use the slots that it is electrically capable of doing. Otherwise, they use an open-ended socket like the top slot here. It's cheaper to do it that way, and allows more components in a tight space. The 16x should be present as it is typically determined by the CPU, and only needs the circuitry and the socket on the motherboard to connect it to the CPU. But the position of it in relation to the PSU makes it difficult to use with common cards that would/could utilize anything beyond the 4x slot above it. Bad design IMHO, but not unexpected. Hope that helps.

I had a question. I'm trying to} put 2 sata hard drives in one but it doesn't look like it has the room any suggestions besides taking out the optical drive because I still use that
I dont think there is any reasonable way to put in a second 3.5 drive, however, if it is a 2.5 drive I believe you might be able to set it on top of the power supply or something like that
@@dragonsystems5973 ok thank you for the reply guess I'll have to watch a video on how to clone the drive on the bigger drive and just switch the drives out
I'm looking for getting same size 7040 for my brother. M2 should be from PCE-E x4 line not the SATA line can you confirm that? Also i can see that one single slot video can be added which is big downside from my end :(
I dont know for sure on the PCI E, I dont usually get that far in depth with these, they are really intended mostly as physical hardware teardowns, and I have never actually sold one with an M2 installed because I usually market them as dirt cheap i7s for like 300 or less. as far as the video car, yeah, I think you are limited to an actual true single slot low profile with only minimal space for overhang as far as the cooler is concerned
Depends on how you do it. It has a single 3.5 bay which can be adapted to two 2.5 bays. It also has an M.2 slot as well, so you do either an M.2 SSD and a single 3.5 hard drive or a 2.5 SSD and a 2.5 Hard drice or any other similar combination
For a graphics card, you'll need a low profile one slot deal. I have a Dell Optiplex 5060 SFF and it's similar in case size to the 7040 shown here. I would, however, advise getting at least an Optiplex 5060 that has a i7-8700k 8th gen cpu as that is one of the three requirement to upgrade to Windows 11. It also has Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 module, two other requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. The Optiplex 7040 only has the i7-6700 6th gen cpu which is not compatible with Windows 11. Something to think about anyways.
I've been hoping to find more videos on the dell - 40 series, though i'm looking for a full case and not the SFF. It's pretty mad that you can get one of these mobos for ~$20 right now directly from Dell refurbished- I think the blue SATA is an 8x, and coupled with the 6x USB 3.0s with a possible 2 more that can be added and this machine has more ports that some full ATX machines I've seen. I do have some questions- I've been thinking of putting one together as a cheap build, and the power supply is the major limitation with both it's SIZE AND supply, since it easily takes up a 1/5th the internal volume for all of 150 watts. It seems however, that a supply like the FSP Group Mini ITX Solution off Amazon or the "GEEEK Custom Flex ATX Modular PSU" would open up for more space- do you think that would be viable for this case? And finally, if you were going to make one into a cheap gaming system what processor would you try for? I've been spoiled by AMD's simple naming schemes; most of these seem to be 1151 skylake so I was hoping for a 3570 but that's a 1150 socket instead. Thanks!
I mean, where there is a will, there is a way, however, that being said, I think that the price on boards is low enough right now that you really might be better off buying a decent micro atx or mini itx board and gutting the dell for parts, it might be a little more expensive, but I think the extra capabilities you would gain by doing so would far outweigh the money spent, and honestly I suspect that if you shopped really carefully you might be able to do it for under $100 additional spent
I have a Dell Optiplex 7040 bought back in Dec 2017 using Windows 7 Pro 1 TB 2.5 inch HDD and a AMD Radeon video card. I wanted to upgrade the HDD to a SSD. Dell said a SSD won't work with Windows 7. Is this true? They said install the Windows 10 Pro Media Recovery first, but that wipes the HDD and it does a clean install. Is there any way to set up a SSD on this Windows 7 Pro 7040 SFF I have?
I guess it is possible there is something weird that prevents it... I would be more inclined to suspect it just wont work with the M.2 slot, Im pretty sure a 2.5 SATA SSD is treated the same as a hard drive by windows
@@dragonsystems5973 I don't think my system has a M.2 SSD slot. I guess I could clone the SSD and install it and see if it boots. Del tech told me I will have problems with Windows 7 Pro on a SSD they said install Windows 10 then install the SSD. Just a question, Dell is so proprietary how to you remove the 2.5 inch HDD from the plastic mount? Do you have to pull it out like you did in the video?
I mean, could you fit it in? Maybe. I think the dimensions would be wrong, but I built a custom machine with a Flex a few months ago, and my opinion on Flex ATX is... HELL NO!! they are freaking jet engines. There are things you can do to quiet them down, but unless you have a place for it where noise does not matter, I would not.
I think you could replace the optical drive with a 2.5 bay and put a 3.5 in the regular bay. The easiest option though would be 2 2.5 drives since dell sells a dual 2.5 caddy. Or you could go with an m.2 in the m.2 slot and either a 2.5 or 3.5 in the hard drive bay
@@TheGuptfauj You know, they do make large 2.5 drives, I think 4 tb is readily available, usually they are thicker than standard 2.5 drives, but it might not matter in the desktop like it does on the laptop

I actually just rewatched thru my video. Honestly it is not set up for what you are trying to do. A quick glance at available models would seem to indicate that they are mostly double slot designs, and thick ones at that. Even if you could find a single slot model, it would be a pretty bad idea because of the fact that you are going to be pushing that card really hard, in an already insufficient space, if you do find a model that is true single slot, they will have already comprised cooling to make that happen, which, combined with it being right against the power supply it will definitely be running hot all the time if not regularly overheating... im no saying where there is a will there is not a way but it is a bad idea to say the least. Your best bet would be spend $40 on a cheap case, $50 on a cheap board, and $40 on a cheap power supply and just drop all the parts into a custom system.
I dont have the unit in front of me.. however, when I receive these they typically have an optical drive and two 2.5 hard drives. the way the drives are both connected is with a 1x pci e power to 2x pci e power splitter, so I believe there might actually be only one normal pci e plug with one mini pci e power plug for the optical drive

I believe so, but I no longer have the machine

I have a 7040 i7 6700 here and I've upgraded his ram with 2x 3200 Mhz 8 Gb but it can't reach those 3200 Mhz, it got stuck into 2133 MHz, is there a way to make it work properly?
Its really not a performance system, I highly doubt it has any sort of XMP capability, in fact I would be very much surprised if it did, keep in mind these are really reliability oriented, ability to enable XMP would probably introduce a source of decreased reliability
hi, gr8 video... indeed coming of leases.. gr8 bargains ---
but do you know if the M.2 2280 is NvME And is bootable in the BIOS ?
Whre is the video card?
Today I tried installing Ubuntu server software with NVME drive for trying my own cloud storage. I think
NVME drive is not compatible with any Linux. I hope I can change to a sata ssd in the M2 connector.
Make a video on how to clean it pls
Thanks!
@@LesCalvin3
Sorry for the late reply, YT wasn't sending me notifications.

I'm trying to} put 2 sata hard drives in one but it doesn't look like it has the room any suggestions besides taking out the optical drive because I still use that
I dont think there is any reasonable way to put in a second 3.5 drive, however, if it is a 2.5 drive I believe you might be able to set it on top of the power supply or something like that
@@dragonsystems5973 ok thank you for the reply guess I'll have to watch a video on how to clone the drive on the bigger drive and just switch the drives out
Can I put a GTX 1050Ti low profile in this?
Thinking abt slapping a low profile 1030 cx u dont wana upgrade the wats
Btw is it quiet?
On a PCIe CPU you have the cooler fans pointing downwards, so that power supply shroud will be blocking those cooling fans entirely.
I have no idea what you are talking about, HOWEVER, this is a dell designed machine, I'd suggest filing your complaint with them.
can this hold a normal harddrive and a ssd?
I’ve been running Windows 11 on my 7040 SFF for over a year with no problems.
@@brianconnery2801 how did you get it working. ive heard poeple having to install certain drivers to get it to work even though its not supported
Does it have a wifi card?
Did you say$20???

Any thoughts on using a flex 1u psu on this system?
I mean, could you fit it in? Maybe. I think the dimensions would be wrong, but I built a custom machine with a Flex a few months ago, and my opinion on Flex ATX is... HELL NO!! they are freaking jet engines. There are things you can do to quiet them down, but unless you have a place for it where noise does not matter, I would not.
Thank you, still very helpful video!
Can you install a 3.5 inch hdd and a 2.5in SSD/hdd - looking at using it for Blue Iris so need 2x hdd in it.
@@dragonsystems5973 thanks I need a 4tb 3.5 drive and a drive for os so m2 or replacing optical drive might work. 2 2.5in won't work

Any idea how much power it consumes when idle or under load?
I did not look, but under idle they are pretty low... like several 10s of watts, under really heavy load I would bet a couple hundred watts, maybe slightly less
Why do they insist on having the pci 16 against the PSU? how hard would it be for them to switch it with the pci 1x? so dumb
Well... im sure their engineers would give you a long winded answer that would technically be correct... but honestly I think they want the systems to be as difficult as possible to upgrade without making it TECHNICALLY impossible to upgrade

Couldn't fit rx 570 in it.
Please clarify: are there three SATA 3.0 connectors here?
I dont have the unit in front of me.. however, when I receive these they typically have an optical drive and two 2.5 hard drives. the way the drives are both connected is with a 1x pci e power to 2x pci e power splitter, so I believe there might actually be only one normal pci e plug with one mini pci e power plug for the optical drive
