Setombe’s lesson ~ Take it easy and surround yourself with those who have your back 🌼
Born in approximately 1985, Setombe is part of the original herd that was rescued from Zimbabwe. While we have little information about her formative years, we believe she may have had some bad experiences in her youth, as she battles to trust, and is often wary and skittish.
Personality:
Setombe could very well have been the Matriarch of the herd, due to her age and body size, but she is a very nervous elephant and is neither a good decision-maker nor a leader. She is a quiet but also curious elephant and likes to be in between the herd, especially with Sebakwe and her daughter, Klaserie, because it makes her feel more protected.
Setombe was recently introduced to the new orphan Khanyisa, and as to be expected she was very calm and relaxed, often taking the opportunity to smell her often.
The birth of Setombe’s daughter Klaserie in 2007 was a very significant event for us, as it showed that she had settled down in her new environment with us. If she had been stressed, she would not have conceived. The birth also had a calming effect on her.
Physical Traits:
She is the biggest (widest and tallest) female of the Jabulani herd, with tusks that are longer and thinner than the other females. Her head is more angular and her skin is quite a bit more wrinkly than the other elephants.

Terms and Conditions of the competition:
The competition runs from 15 April to 30 May 2020.
🐘The winner will be announced on 02 June 2020.
🐘 Each foster membership of USD100 or multiples thereof gets an entry to win.
🐘Prize includes a 3-night stay for 2 people sharing in a suite with private pool, all meals, safari activities, elephant experience, VIP tour of HESC, an opportunity to meet our carers in person, return transfers from Hoedspruit airport to the lodge.
🐘 Prize excludes flight costs, beverages and conservation levy of R150 per person

I'm so happy she is Phabeni's foster mama now. She is really in love with the little fellow (and vice versa), and it's so endearing to see him suckle on her. Is it due 2 their size that u all don't have more physical contact w/these Amazing Gentle Giant's? I watch how careful/respectful they act so not 2 accidentally hurt each other - that tells me they're consciously aware of their body mass . I've seen how slowly/gently they back into most situation's when they're protecting a baby or younger member of their family, even as they approach an elder-
I don't get the feeling u all fear these huge loving soul's.
I'd personally have a hard time keeping myself from lovingly touching these Elephant's all the time as I've watched how careful n protective they are with each other constantly so once they knew I wasn't a threat I'm sure I could trust them not 2 hurt me!

I know the elephants at HEARD do not mate because by law if in captivity, they cannot. So, did Setombe arrive pregnant, or was she adopted along with her baby daughter? I’d appreciate your response. Thank you in advance. I must add, she’s such a gracious creature!

How did Setombe come to the herd
