Yeah. One should definitely do it if the phone is out of warranty, old and no longer getting updates from the company.
Infact i am looking forward to do it with my iPhone 6 (no longer supported by apple) and Mi Max (4 yars old smartphone).

Before you root a phone always have twrp first. This way you can keep backups and you can also flash custom ROMs if you want. And with root you can use theme engines such as substratum to theme any app on the phone.
Before Installing TWRP recovery you should unlock your bootloader and it's not compulsory to install TWRP before root access

Just a little word of advice. I've been an android user since 2012, and root user (from 2012). Speaking of OTA updates you do get the updates. Everything comes to the ROM (Operating System) you are using. If you ask me the patches and updates are at your fingertips. As you can decide when you want to install. And not to mention the latest android os and patches you get easily with a rooted device. The reason being the manufacturer of the device has to customize the os before it's delivered to your device. Most importantly you should have a knowledge what exactly you are doing. My advice root your device using laptop, which help you in case of power failures. I'm not here to get your hopes high. Till date I've never bricked my phones. Currently I'm using Oneplus 5 128GB. I rooted it on the very day I purchased it. Previously I did the same with the 3T and Nexus 6p. Go the forums and make your decision. I would advice you check out the xda-developers.com (website). I hope I haven't complicated you guys. Anyways happy rooting.
