    There are tourist trains that go from Oslo across the country to Bergan. There is some incredible scenery and massive mountains. There is a train driver youtube channel called "RailCowGirl" That has a lot of videos on that route. Sweden and Norway must be a huge culture change from Japan

    • @drdewott9154
      @drdewott9154 Год назад +3

      The trains between Bergen and Oslo arent even tourist trains. They're just regular long distance trains and a lifeline for many rural settlements in inland norway with both daytime trains and overnight trains between Norway's 2 largest cities. But it is also one of the most scenic railways in the world and probably the easiest way to access the Flåmsbana branch line which IS a tourist train.

  • @emilresmann
    @emilresmann Год назад +12

    I'm from Sweden. The railwaysystem here used to be really good, but for the past decades necesary investments have not been done. Our most important route is the 600km link from Malmö to Stockholm. This link only has a double track, whereas we urgently need four tracks to handle the traffic volume. Already 20 years ago there was an urgent need to expand the tracks, but the politicians can not agree on the terms, so nothing happens! There is a debate if a high-speed rail should be built, or if the existing lines should be expanded. Then there is the question of funding...
    I live near Malmö, and here the trains have constant delays. As the local trains use the same insufficient rails, going by train in the region is quite challenging!

    • @anthrogal78
      @anthrogal78 Год назад +1

      That’s probably why I couldn’t find many time choices for an Oslo-Stockholm train and will have to fly to Stockholm instead (just as cheap too!)

    • @djdoktor8748
      @djdoktor8748 Год назад

      I think it’s too big of a country with a too small population. I personally haven’t had any problems with SJ, riding first class on x2000 is a very nice experience but I agree Oslo - Stockholm and Stockholm - Malmö lines needs investments

    • @drdewott9154
      @drdewott9154 Год назад +1

      Yeah. The High speed lines would definitely bring the most value for the money and provide the greatest capacity relief, on top of huge journey time reductions from Stockholm to Gothenburg and Malmö respectively. Shame the current right wing government isn't as big of a fan of them, but the Östlänken phase 1 from Stockholm to Linköping and Gothenburg to Borås seem to hopefully progress, even if with some limitations. I just hope the network can be fully built out to 320km/h instead of some weird less good half solution with lower speeds just to save a tiny amount of money.

    • @drdewott9154
      @drdewott9154 Год назад +1

      @@anthrogal78 Yeah, but the EU has still announced it'll provide support to upgrade basically the whole of the Stockholm to Oslo line on the Swedish side to 200km/h, which is definitely a good step. Should hopefully reduce journey times on the route by an hour

  • @harryjames8064
    @harryjames8064 Год назад +7

    When I was in Stockholm, I once took a 5-hour journey on 2 trains and a bus to a little (what I would describe as) village called Nusnas near a town called Mora (pronounced with the stress on the 'a'. If you don't do this, the Swedes will tell you they have no idea where that is.). It was also in the middle of winter, and, I forgot to mention, a return journey. I only spent probably 2 hours there. I'm not complaining, I enjoyed it. However, I did have some concerns about waiting in the dark on a snow-covered road in the middle of nowhere for a bus that was running 2 hours late. I didn't get home till about 8. But I did manage to buy myself a horse (the reason I went), and I managed to get some nice photos of some lovely red-painted houses standing in the snow next to a partially frozen lake. I would probably do it again.

    I did this route early winter. IC locomotive train saturday morning, back sunday afternoon in X3000. Due to booking early and the loyalty program I got an awesome price for the combination, and did in in 1st class. To be honest, the Lok+Vagn train might not be high speed rail bling, but it was rather comfortable and 2+1 seating in 1st is amazing.
    I recall Stockholm to Karlstad wasn't that long a trip, but once into Norway it did slow down quite a bit. However, the winding track was very nice and it is about enjoying the journey's views. It's the longest day train trip I have taken, and much less stressing than flying!
    Oslo itself was quite nice to visit for the weekend, did mostly walk around and didn't eat out. Also it was a fantastic sunny winter weekend, quite good actually.

    I'm sorry, while it is a beautifully made video with interesting views, I expected a bit more after the title. It would have been interesting to hear what aspects made the train journey feel a bit 'creepy' to you. (Can't have been just the fact that there were these plastic bags next to your seat where you didn't know why they were there.)
    It's perfectly fine to have this feeling when travelling in other countries due to cultural differences - the ones who don't experience it are either unwilling to admit to it or are the tourists we all know, the ones who expect everything to work exactly like it does where they're from and who end up behaving accordingly. Highlighting specific aspects that make up that feeling is always interesting for gaining an understanding of other cultures and how different people view the same situations.

    • @maedetheone
      @maedetheone Год назад

      Actually, I realise I might be a bit unfair here. It could just be a case of language nuances. Perhaps the "little creepy" is meant to only apply to the sculpture park that you visited. In which case the video title is just a bit misleading because it implies that the *journey* to Oslo was creepy instead of the park visit.

    290 for that hotelroom? There should be at least the summer olympics or

    The weird thing is, I'm always hearing about how majestic and immensely superior train travel in Europe is when compared to that in the United States. And while I get that some (although by no means all) of the routes offer higher speed service than here in America... I'm always surprised that I'm not blown away by the accommodations. These trains really do not look dramatically more elegant or refined than the long-distance routes by Amtrak and VIA. I watch these videos *expecting* to be awestruck... and I'm not.

      This is a rather old train set though. They also operate some X2000 trains on this routes. For internal Norwegian trains they are starting to replace the very old train sets with modern Stadler Flirtnex trains from 2026. Trains will be both for day and night travel.

      I wonder how many derailments happen in Europe compared to the US. 🤔 It appears Europe does a better job maintaining the rails.

      @@rapunzel39 sadly it happens in Europe too. Politicians are not great at maintaining rails here too. A deadly crash in the Netherlands a month ago sadly.

      Its a venerable Rc-lok which has been modernized in stages, and it and the carriages are probably about 40 years old now. But do not let that fool you, its about 30km/h faster then your avrage long distance Amtrak train. There are also modern train, like the X2000, if you want modern majestic high speed service.
      "expecting to be awestruck" out of curiosity what did you expect? The cabin is clean and fresh, it have electrical outlets, Wi-Fi/internet, toilet and the train normally have a restaurant carriage with a smale play groun for children. What more do you expect?
