Bob, if there were a method to send you a picture of the statue of this Clarksville, Tennessee native, I would. It is a beautiful bronze statue in downtown of Clarksville on Franklin Street.

An impressive aspect of Sutton's performance with the Sgt. Carter character was noting the subtleties playing the part of the DI. I recall one scene when he was leaving the CO office, as his salute and about-face move was the most spot-on movements I've seen on a TV production involving military protocol.
A most humorous episode of Gomer Pyle, USMC, I recall was when Gomer was patronizing a restaurant serving rabbit, which ended up giving Gomer bouts of sleep-walking . . . with attitude.
Gomer would sleep-walk and awaken Sgt. Carter in the middle of the night, with being loudly confrontational with the Sgt. All the while Carter was slack-jawed stunned being on the receiving end of the belligerent tongue-lashing Gomer was spewing-out. lol

Sutton's Sgt Carter was just squishy enough to be human but disciplined enough to be a Marine. Sutton did a wonderful job of playing both and left plenty of space for Gomer. His talent as actor and comedian were exquisite. IRL he and Jim Nabors were good friends and supported each other's careers.

He died about a hour drive from my house, so I remember his death very well. He was a versatile character actor, as demonstrated in the 3 Gunsmoke episodes that he acted in. Thanks for telling his story….Papaw Dan

The greatest irony of all this is Frank Sutton tried to join the Marines in World War II, but they wouldn't take him. He served in the Army instead.

Honestly, as a Marine, I could tell this actor was an Army man, a soldier. The mannerisms, the presence, the cadence, everything said "Soldier". The same as with the movie "The DI", 1957, and Jack Webb.

Every time I watch Gomer Pyle I think of the comic strip Beetle Bailey, with Sgt. Carter as Sgt. Snorkel, and Gomer as Beetle.

Frank Sutton was an outstanding actor who left us too soon.I think he would have been a potential to play Barney Miller if he had lived I would like to have seen him in the first Star Wars trilogy as a rebel general.

One would think Sutton yelling so much on the show strained his heart. People dont eat meat as much now as they did then that caused heart attacks. I never knew about Frank Sutton death at a young age, until several years later. You must have someone you know that really kept up with the actors. My uncle & me really kept up with the actors. About your music videos. I really learned the most about rock & Jazz groups the last 5 years from youtube. I collect cds & records with the best sound. I play several instruments, & I think that makes me understand good music better than most record collectors that have a tone death ear that wouldnt know a good sounding record if they heard one, I can say the same for audiophiles that spend lots of money on equipment. About now I think I figured out the best groups already, especially the jazz groups in the last year. Keith Richards said that there wasnt any really great guitarists in rock bands. He said that what was great was how the band members blended together. Thats why when a guitarist leaves a band that no one likes him. The girls go crazy over the lead singer. If I was a guitarist, I would be the lead singer, because lead singers get all the credit & money they dont deserve, while the guitarist that really makes the band gets no credit. An example, The Beatles cheated guitarist McCartney from songs, when the Beatles was over, McCartney was the best one. The record companies cheat the groups, groups should be their own record companies. Then the Beatles didnt own their own music. Most musicians absolutely hate playing in concerts after awhile, while a very few musicians love the heck out of playing. Most great musicians never make it, while terrible bands do great. When the Beatles first hit the Us, they were raved over, but in the beginning they were actually mediocre. The jealousy, money splitting, & who rules the band in lawsuits, all is crazy!

Thelma Lou said that she had a slight crush on Griffith, I bet it was a big crush. Remember Griffith was married. I wonder if he picked up on the crush. I wonder if she let him know. I heard that Andy & his first wife stayed drunk & fought all the time, probably over his women.
