Great upload! A little band I belonged to in the mid 80s opened for him twice. Highlight of my “musical career.” For me JR epitomizes what rock and roll SHOULD be. A JR show is a master class in how to engage with an audience.
Wow!! An old, long show of Jojo. Great. Saw him live in Bremen, must've been 1990/1991. I didn't know a single song, maybe Roadrunner by the Modern Lovers. But I've always read about my then-loved music - the Indie Scene in the UK - that all the band members did like Jonathan and his sound. So I bought a 2nd hand LP (Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers 1987) on the day of the concert, heard it through and was amazed! Till today "Gail loves me" and "When Harpo played his harp" are my favorites. The gig was half-empty but I liked it a lot. Years later I saw him in Hamburg again live..
I recognize this guitar. I saw Jonathan live in Toronto three times I think. The best one was at Ultrasounds in about 1994 or 95. When is this one ? I'm a lifelong JR fan. Ever since I heard Angels Watching Over Me in 1978 on cfny radio 102.1...! I was a second year art student. JR influenced all aspects of my understanding of being an artist and making art.
You've got wonderfully eclectic and impeccable taste! Of course they're very much like my own haha. Anyways thanks for all the great uploads this unexpected gift today.
"Was für eine wunderbare Show!" I've made the effort to type out the setlist. Maybe someone can help out with track 3 (Instrumental) and track 11 ("Beverly Twist?"). Setlist: 01 Feel It (Sam Cooke Cover) 02 Vincent Van Gogh 03 "Instrumental" ??? (7:25) 04 The Girl Stands Up to Me Now 05 You Can't Talk to the Dude 06 Fender Stratocaster 07 To Hide a Little Thought 08 The Heart of Saturday Night 09 Egyptian Reggae (The Modern Lovers Song) 10 Back In Your Life (Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers Song) 11 "Beverly Twist" ??? (35:30) 12 Roadrunner (The Modern Lovers Song) 13 Pablo Picasso (The Modern Lovers Song) 14 Give Paris One More Chance (Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers Song) 15 Blue Moon (Rodgers & Hart Cover) 16 You're Crazy for Taking the Bus 17 Since She Started to Ride 18 Reno 19 The Neighbors 20 Let Her Go Into The Darkness
Beautiful! I think this is the same year I saw mr Richman perform at the Hultsfred festival in Sweden. He was kind of overwhelmed by the big crowd and response.
If I were to encounter someone that I may wish to strike up a friendship (or something more) with, and found that they didn't care for Jonathan Richman - in any of his various iterations - and can't appreciate his numerous contributions to music, then I would have no choice but to inform them that I regret that our interactions will be considerably limited. I mean, heck - he's sung about both the ice cream man AND vampire girls, and so much more, like Vincent van Gogh AND Pablo Picasso! There should be no confusion about that, even if Jonathan may so confused be on occasion. 😆

I'm glad you found and enjoyed this video Robert
Jonathan Richman is the embodiment of joy, he's what everybody wishes to be like but just can't kill their ego to get there.
MERRY FRIGGIN XMAS! Thank you so much for the gift on this Xmas Day 2023. Richmanism forever!
Fuckin awsome! Whistling Egyptian reggae got me through years of industrial staffing, working when I first moved to Belgium
