That was a fun Video! Explanation...realizing I did not put a note in the box...... I do some charity work for a thrift shop run by nuns that help kids everywhere. A few months ago, a large donation box came in full of Matchbox, Hot Wheels & other Die cast Cars. As a favor to the thrift shop, I offered to buy the whole lot to save them from going through it all. We agreed on a price and home it came. I did this with you and a few of the other restorers in mind. I divided them up based on make and since you are "Marty's Matchbox Makeovers" you got the Matchbox part of the large lot. The rest was sent to a few of the other restoration guys. Feel free to do whatever you want them...use them for parts, giveaways...whatever you want. There is also kind of a gag gift for your wife (2 brand new tooth brushes...since you use hers to take off Paint) and a cleaning brush for you. Enjoy them in good health.....looking forward to your next makeover! Maybe customize few... Chris (Car1956)
Hey everyone, not actually back from my holidays yet, this was a scheduled video. I'll be back on the 28th and a new video will be up on the 30th. Its a doozy!
Started restoring myself in addition to my model building because of your videos Marty and I have to thank you so much, I’m keeping my eye out at every little mom and pop shop I go to for good pieces to send you!
ah nostalgia, I remember getting some of those Model A vans, with logos of stuff on. Cereal I think? but hey there's a whole bunch of them there, and I know that this is a restoration channel and not really a matchbox custom place, But I agree. Marty's Matchbox Makeover truck would be pretty nice.
Hi Marty, The city service vehicle 15:00 has rotary brushes on both sides that sweep debris away from the curb / gutter and under the vehicle. It is picked up by another brush and dumped into the hopper at the front. Once full, The hopper is emptied into a bigger trash truck 02:50 & 11:14. Cheers
Many of those look too good to restore! Loads of promotional vehicles that probably couldn't be bought in the shops too. Chris is obviously a good feller, very generous!
Most of the vintage-style w/logo cars were given away in exchange for proof-of-purchase. I had a few of them. ...And yes, that little plastic top was notorious for coming off. I gave those cars to my younger brother and he doesn’t recall what happened to them.👽
I love this little car restoration community, everyone’s doing it and learning from each other and supporting everyone’s choices , no negativity, just enjoyment!
That's a very generous donation, but not much in the way of restoration subjects. The toothbrush addition to the package was priceless though! "There's something wrong with mine!" Lol!
The small unit with big wheels at 5:13 from my view appears to be a large all wheel drive farm tractor or an air craft tug (move aircraft around airports / flight decks). Hope you had a good holiday.
15:55 That vehicle is used to clean the roads. The from bucket is actually the catch basin for the brushes. It will lift out and dump into a truck that follows it around. Around here, they're mainly used for Spring cleanups to get the sand and other debre left over from Winter. We call them Street Sweepers.
My understanding is that Matchbox had the model T Fords ready and the colour schemes and decals depended on which companies wanted to order them as a give away. I remember collecting tokens for Kellogg's Corn Flakes ones back in the 80s
They also did some for the AFL and Australia post. Seems that each country has someone who wants these which would meant that there are probably countless versions of this model worldwide.
A company called Lledo used to do something similar; a slightly smaller model based loosely on a Ford Model A. They were mainly promotional products but individuals could order them as momentoes of special events.
Great channel for restorations of matchbox cars! The thing I like about your channel is how you show all the steps. Other restoration channels are like "ok well you've seen my drill out the posts and sand a million times so I won't show that here." But, like, that's the entire reason we watch these videos!
The bucket in front of the street Sweeper collect all the dirt that is collected from the road (through a vacuum system) and is deployed to dump that trash in the bin of a truck when it is full.
What an awesome haul! As for the local TV stations, they're aren't that many. Large cities have 3 major stations. ABC, CBS, & NBC. Then some of the larger cities have a PBS station, that are located mostly on college campuses.
Street sweepers were a common sight growing up in Brooklyn New York. You would have to park your car on one side of the street on one day and then the other side another day every week so the street sweeper could clean. Everything swept up would collect in the bucket and then the bucket would swing out to dump it. Love the videos Marty - keep them coming!
So happy to see a video! If you make long shelves above or on either side of your couch, you can display the big ones as my uncle did when i was a Kid. They always got my imagination going. Easier to see from a distance. Anyway... hope you’re having a blast, Buddy !!!
That "street cleaner" is common over here in Canada, and they come down the streets in early spring and clean up all the run off sand and leaves etc off the roads. You don't see them very often any more Marty, but when I was a boy growing up in Toronto they were common. What an awesome gift! It's your personality, you're a fantastic fella Marty, humerus and pleasant, the type any guy would be proud to have as a friend!! Jack - Canada
@@okjoe5561 Wow really? I'd love to see them again in my neighborhood Joe, just the nostalgia would be awesome! We used to have a little Italian man come around when I was a boy in Toronto with a knife sharpening wheel, and he came by every weekend ringing an old school yard bell singing this old song "sharp knives happy wives" or something like that! We also had another little Italian man with the big popcorn machine on this three wheeled bike! He also had red and green candy apples and roasted cashews. @@bronzesnake7004 They're new machines, they're still manufactured. They pick up the leaves and trash and such (mostly leaves where I live). Keeps the streets looking nice and all of that stuff out of the storm sewers.
The model steam lorry is a Foden which was very common in the UK back in the day, quite a few still exist in the possession of enthusiasts. The Fodens were 'overtypes' with the cylinders over the top of the boiler like a traction engine. Sentinel waggons (Sentinel always used two 'g's)were 'undertypes' with the cylinders mounted horizontally under the chassis and the boiler in the cab. Happy Restoring!
Hi Marty. The street cleaner is a self loading street sweeper. That is modeled after the Elgin Pelican model. The brooms touch the curb and move debris under the sweeper. Another broom called the main broom then flicks the debris and dirt onto a rubber conveyor belt that moves the material to the hopper that raises to dump. The hoppers will hold 4 cubic yards of debris.
Ha ha, it's a new video and it's already got 1.2k likes when I get to it!! When you laugh Marty you look so much like Uncle Fester; that's a huge compliment mate.
Ya know......you've made me feel like you invited me to your home so that I could be there while you unpacked these gems. And I would be sitting there going "Oh wow!" and "Kin I see that?" You're not only a master restorer of Matchbox, you're one great performer. I hope that your wife gets to that toothbrush before you do! Roy
Marty, the "Street Cleaner" as you call it is referred to as a "Street Sweeper" here in the U.S. You are correct with rear wheels turning, the front hopper is what collects all the debris from the street and is dumped at our "landfills" which I believe you called a "tip". To steer them you actually turn the wheel opposite of the direction you wish to go. They are quite common in our city municipalities here. I have actually driven them and they can be a bit scary as the bounce quite easily and turn very quickly and on a dime. Nice set of vehicles you just received, thanks for sharing.
They are beautiful models! Most of them needs only a little TLC to the decals. Chris, your an awesome guy! The models found the perfect home! My appreciation to you from just another Marty fan! This was a awesome un-boxing video with a huge surprise! Thanks Marty... Thanks Chris!
That was great watching you unbox all of those cars. I only recognized 4 or 5 myself. The green street cleaner looks like the ones they used when I was a kid. The real one was made by Pelican and the front end that comes out is where all of the dirt and debris went to when it was cleaning the curbs. The brushes would move in when traveling or out when cleaning and a large brush up front cleaned the street itself. I used to love watching them clean the streets as it was interesting watching the water truck come through first then the sweepers.Your right about the rear wheel being the steering unit. When it was full it would lift up and out like the model and the operator would dump the contents into a dump truck. I hope this helps. I just remembered it was made by Elgin and called a Pelican.
Massive generosity by Chris their. Great little video Marty. Some diverse stuff there. Your a lucky guy Marty, keep the good stuff coming. Your wife as lot to put up with lol. :-)
What a collection! That street sweeper brings back some memories. Local council used to run one of those along the street, where I grew up: late 1960's early 70's. It did not have the bucket, and it had a single wheel on the back. There was a large box where the bucket is, which might have been a collection bin. Nowadays, the street sweeper is mounted on a regular truck chassis. The Foden steam wagon is superb.
@railtrolley ... You see similar in Paris and other large French towns, often out early in the morning. Those guys don't have our UK strict 'poop' laws so it's good that a little vehicle burbles by and makes everything sparkling, so the chic Parisian ladies can sit at a pavement café table and enjoy a _petit noir_ before going to work.
Yes indeed some of them are models of yesteryear, the steam truck for example you can see it printed on the underside in the detail shots, they are really neat models with real wire wheels and such. I mostly only collect Corgi's and Dinky's which are 1:43 while Matchbox usually are smaller but i have the 1928 M-B SS and would like to get more since these are 1:43 and super nice.
Very intriguing. The duplicates give you an instant collection. Imagine if many unloaded their cars & sent them to you. It kind of saps the fun out of personally collecting though. I am glad they mostly are in great shape. If I had my old cars I would be contemplating sending them to you also.
Those street sweeper are a regular sight after midnight in Providence, RI USA... They run over night. Great haul... I'm really enjoying your content. You've inspired me to start learning how to restore those matchbox cars.
Hello, Marty. Thanks for sharing the video of the unboxing - there are some great models there. The Matchbox 'Model A Ford' van was probably, in the 1980's and '90s, one of the most popular promotional items ever made. The original model had, if I remember correctly, stickers for 'Champion' Sparkplugs. Then it appeared as a mailaway for Kelloggs cornflakes. I have seen literally hundreds of variations on the logos. It was a hit, because (a) It's a very attractive model: (b) It has a large area on the rear on which to sticker or tampo your company logo or council slogan; (c) It was cheap enough to buy in bulk from Lesney. There were companies who specialised in custom paint jobs for this model. My brother has a couple he got from work that advertise different auto spares companies (he's an auto engineer).
I know there's been a lot of road service vehicles in UK and Ireland over the years. I am familiar with that model of road washer it sprays water and brushes at the same time. The old road service vehicles always looked cool to me. PS wait 'til someone sends you a Zamboni ! Cheers.
@15:05 That street sweeper isn't too dissimilar from the ones we have here in Bethlehem. Ours don't have the bucket mounted in front, but otherwise, the design is pretty similar.
No street sweepers in Australia? They're a Godsend in the springtime here in Minnesota where they use a ton of salt and sand on the roads throughout the Winter months. The bucket on the front would normally be closed and is where the detritus is swept into via the brushes and conveyor system within the vehicle. It opens up and swings out to dump all the sand and garbage they have collected.
Marty: many of those Kellogg trucks and some of the other branded ones were available here in the states as mail in offers...send in so many box tops plus shipping and handling and get the vehicle in the mail. As a rule they were not available in stores and some can be quite collectible. Very nice of Chris to do this!!!
The street sweeper has the small wheels in the back because they are front wheel drive and rear steer. It makes for easier maneuverability going around parked cars, plus they can easily do a U-turn on narrow streets.
the funny thing is that the only version of the A ford van we got here in denmark is a dark blue (black fenders) with white roof and kellogs brands on the side we got the everywhere you find used matchbox cars.... i thought this was the only version made...how wrong i was.
Can’t believe you have never seen a street sweeper before. Just for your information, the bin in front is for collecting the debris that’s swept up off the road and sent into it by vacuum. Then when it is full it tips out and can be dumped into a dump truck or in some designated area.
Very Nice! I would like to find a one of each kind/model of those 20s, 30s models which you got in different decorations. Back in mid 90s, there was a Coca Cola promotion here in my country that, you traded, like 10 caps of 2L pet bottles for (plastic) trucks like those. Although I still have 3 sets(5 trucks), they are fragile, and having something like this, I could customize into something more durable and with quality.
ahhhhh.....waiting for the unveiling......actually glad most don’t need anything but a cleaning because it might of got a little overwhelming for ‘Matchbox Marty”. Love the set.....Looks like Chris donated his collection....thanks Chris💗
Great unboxing video Marty. Loved seeing all the different vehicles. In relation to the Kellogg's vehicles, in the UK (round about late 80's / early 90's) Kellogg's, I think, allowed you to send away for these cars by saving up vouchers from the cereal boxes. I'm a bit sketchy on how it worked, whether they came in the cereal boxes or you had to send for them, because I was still quite young then. I do remember having a load of these cars as a kid and loved pretending I was back in the early 1900's. I dunno if the US had a similar thing on the go, but the cars look identical to the ones I had but just with different branding.
Interesting unboxing video - thanks for sharing! The Kellogg’s vans were definitely a giveaway with a few tokens from boxes of cereals here in the UK back in the 1980s. I have several boxed examples myself. I’m guessing they may have done a similar promotion in the USA too around the same time?
Added note 1: to Marty...That 3 wheeled vehicle with the brushes is what they use to clean the downtown streets of Philadelphia...And it can turn on a dime.
Marty, the street sweeper's bucket fills up as they clean the street. When full it opens to empty it. Friend use to drive one, your right it can turn around at the end of the street, because of the back wheels.
That street cleaner looks to be a model of the Elgin Pelican street sweepers made in Elgin Illinois. The city of Greencastle uses Elgin street sweepers.

The street cleaner is common here in the States. the bucket is where the stuff from the street vacuumed up is collected.
I really enjoy your videos! Fantastic work.
I think here in the UK the Kelloggs ones u could collect token from cereal boxes and just pay the postage.i did a few when I was a kid
What can you say its awesome 👍👍👍👍
Marty: many of those Kellogg trucks and some of the other branded ones were available here in the states as mail in offers...send in so many box tops plus shipping and handling and get the vehicle in the mail. As a rule they were not available in stores and some can be quite collectible. Very nice of Chris to do this!!!
Yay! You're back from holiday! Welcome home ;)
A very good selection of various models you got there! Enjoy!!
The street sweeper has the small wheels in the back because they are front wheel drive and rear steer. It makes for easier maneuverability going around parked cars, plus they can easily do a U-turn on narrow streets.
Great box of cars, thanks for sharing Marty... Looking forward to your next video; as always thanks for being you!
the funny thing is that the only version of the A ford van we got here in denmark is a dark blue (black fenders) with white roof and kellogs brands on the side we got the everywhere you find used matchbox cars.... i thought this was the only version made...how wrong i was.
Great video nice guy Chris for giving you them car .
I bet that many of them , like the Kellogs were promotional items only available from them with a coupon on the cereal boxes
ahhhhh.....waiting for the unveiling......actually glad most don’t need anything but a cleaning because it might of got a little overwhelming for ‘Matchbox Marty”.
Love the set.....Looks like Chris donated his collection....thanks Chris💗
Marty, my sympathies, God speed for the healing needed for our Kiwi brethren. From your Yankee cousins in the U.S.
I dunno if the US had a similar thing on the go, but the cars look identical to the ones I had but just with different branding.
so cool! Can't wait to see the videos for these
Interesting unboxing video - thanks for sharing! The Kellogg’s vans were definitely a giveaway with a few tokens from boxes of cereals here in the UK back in the 1980s. I have several boxed examples myself. I’m guessing they may have done a similar promotion in the USA too around the same time?
my aunt used to work at the matchbox factory :)
I have the news van only with the British TV channel Sky emblazoned on the side
THANK YOU...for sharing. WOW!!!! Nice gift.
Just finished watching all of your videos. Great channel, enjoy it allot, and learned so much. Thanks
You had a 'nunu' in the collection - that is what we call those strange street sweeping things.
Added note 1: to Marty...That 3 wheeled vehicle with the brushes is what they use to clean the downtown streets of Philadelphia...And it can turn on a dime.
You could probably make a 1920s- 1930s diorama with all those old trucks
Marty, the street sweeper's bucket fills up as they clean the street. When full it opens to empty it. Friend use to drive one, your right it can turn around at the end of the street, because of the back wheels.
That street cleaner looks to be a model of the Elgin Pelican street sweepers made in Elgin Illinois. The city of Greencastle uses Elgin street sweepers.
70 vehicles total, USPS must have taken 30 of them!!!
Wow,,,some great stuff,,,,, Awesome,,,
You might need to create Marty's Matchbox online museum, with HD pics from all angles of your entire collection :)
Oh come on! You make model kits! You gotta do some build videos :) awesome video.
