The funny thing is that there are guy in the tube producing silly things like" the best bass intro ever" or shit like that and they even fail to mention this fast and furious peace of none other than Mr.JJ
A constant reminder of times before ALL music became dollar signs in some producers eyes. Creative and true, this music can never die like the music of today does in less than a year.
I first heard this song on RUclips, then one day I heard my dad playing it on the turntable, I was like 'He knows this band too?' My dad keeps his hobbies and past life very secret, sad thing really. We have more in common then I originally thought.
Wonderful lyrics and melodies. I just cannot fault them, their early records were out of this world. Their rhythm and timing is perfect. Still miss them. Like us all getting older and into maturity like a good wine.
One of the best bands of their day and there were so many great bands around then. Golden Brown is a personal favourite of mine, I got trapped on that fly paper for a few years. I have no regrets though, what’s the point of regret. My only regrets when it’s my time to go will be the things I never got round to doing or didn’t try at least once.
I still remember being 5 when my dad showed me this music video and I was scarred for 7 years but I can’t even joke this song is such a bop and it doesn’t get the fame it deserves 🖤❤️
The bass and drums from 1:50 are simply the best. The keyboard is magnificent, but the bass and drums are just awesome. RUclips compression crushes it; listen to a high quality version.
A few years back when Hugh was doing a solo acoustic gig near me (utterly amazing), he added a new lyric to this, and it went: Whatever happened to, Zinedine Zadane? He gave a head-butt... That got him sent off!
@Connie Daye _..and Gentlemen in England now abed will think their spoons accurs'd, and hold their breakfast cereals cheap, whiles any speaks who broke fast with me on this, _*_Rice Crispies day!_*
Recognised as one of the first punk bands that diversed into the early years of new wave Pretty clever as most bands just continue to carry on as they began
I've known these guys for 10 minutes only and it's already pretty obvious their creativity is up there with Talking Heads, The Clash or even to such as The Yardbirds and The Who.
The ONLY song i can honestly say i remember the time and date i first heard it, and thought WOW what the hell was that. AMAZING. no other song has ever left such an impressionon me
you could actually hear the 80's gearing up from 1977. I remember it distinctly, 'what's that?' i said. 'That'll be the 80's getting ready' came the reply. If you stood on a chair you could glimpse it just over the horizon
The line about Trotsky getting his ears burned just had to be made into a cartoon. It could have been done 'Tom and Jerry' style or 'Itchy and Scratchy' style, but Terry Gilliam style seems just right for this song. I think it's that both the Pythons and the Stranglers have become heroes, in similarly rebellious ways and in the same era.
Saw these guys live when I was 15yrs old, in Toronto. My friend and I snuck in with a huge group of ppl cuz the doorman couldnt b bothered to check all the tickets, lol. We went and stood right infront of the stage in the mosh pit. Good times
@@andrewmatthews6861 saw Lou Reed, and Jim Carroll around this same time. Thought I'd died and gone 2 heaven. Altho Carroll was high af, and sucked big time. Yes, they were great times!!
A few days ago I heard this on the radio station and my heart stopped and I jammed and had massive flashbacks to this after like 7 years this was my childhood I remember getting dropped of at elementary school and almost everyday I heard this I was born in 2006 but I grew up with very 60s - early 20s Era music and kids at school laugh at me for loving this music but that won't stop me.
Never either before or since heard a song for the first time like I did with this song and thought WOW what was that. can still remember hearing it for the first time as the first song played on the top 20 rundown on Radio One In October 77
Lots of Rock and especially New Wave music holds messages and prophecy from GOD aimed at the Devil and the fallen angels and all who follow them. This song is one of 1000,s. Read ACTS 2:17-21 in the Bible and it will shock you.
“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ I AM SHOOK
Alan, I totally agree with you. Still the same passion to listen their so amazing songs and especially "Golden Brown", which has been as a providence for them, when the band was in a very difficult situation and at the same time, it is an unforgatable romantic waltz for the public. Thanks for you coment.
This is fantastic. Much better than the one released on the official DVD. One small quibble: The line in the first part is "dear old Lenny," not "dear old Lenin." Fairly soon after release, he started performing it as "dear Lenny Bruce" to avoid the confusion. Much respect.
sort of joke you find in the "Big Lebowski" movie . In this movie one guy quote Lenin and another guy understand Lennon and keep on saying "I am the walrus".
I met this song first time I watched for the punk video from the 70´s, it was a first saw passion, great live video compilation, wonderful song, fantastic group. I´ve never seen this videoclip, but I though it´s so cool; thanks for posting
Broke the mould these guys with there music, of there era, they broke all the music influences, from punk, to to rock, to pop, to ska and mods, genius the every one of this band!!!
First you couldn't smoke in them or buy dodgy baccy from underneath the counter, and then it became like at least £5 a pint. Killed themselves, really (well, they were kinda forced to). Shame.
Re-reading Simon R Green's Nightside series. When the hero of the series shows back up in Strangefellows (the oldest bar in the world where Merlin is buried under), the bar starts to play this song. Now that I've listened to this song... It definitely fits.
" Pure Genius " From A Band Who " Have Never Been Afraid Of Displaying There Cultural/ Historical References And Subsequent Prowess !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
The most underrated band of all time, what a band !!! come on.
ridiculous. The best band of all time. he he.
They were underrated esp for originally hitting the scene as a punk band then moved with the trends and a huge influence on the beginnings of new wave
Number 7 on the list. Though Can should've been number 1 not number 8.. ruclips.net/video/MaWHttrnUSQ/видео.html
I love music and they're all number one...with a few excepting lol
AGREED!
Rock In Peace Dave Greenfield.
💚
Indeed
The Stranglers really deserve to be in the Rock And Roll hall of fame, These guys are awesome!
That’s an awful lot of exclamation marks
They had something
Fuck disgusting Rock And Roll hall of fame
The keyboard runs & solo on NMH are exquisite and timeless and were created by a genius. R.I.P. Dave Greenfield, your musical legacy lives on.
This music video is Just wonderful. Love it
Amazing song and band. I'm fortunate enough to have seen them last year. RIP Dave Greenfield
This song has one of the greatest intros of all time AND one of the greatest endings of all time. And the stuff in between is pretty awesome too.
The funny thing is that there are guy in the tube producing silly things like" the best bass intro ever" or shit like that and they even fail to mention this fast and furious peace of none other than Mr.JJ
The fact this isn’t the actual music video and this RUclips account created this video is astounding.
this music refuses to go stale..... fresh as a daisy....yet it's about 38 years ago...how can that be possible?

long life lyrics. use by eternity
People have been saying the exact same thing since 1920, if not 400 B.C.

It still fits perfectly with the zeitgeist.
What ever happens...don't give up on music and thankfully we can still enjoy these great artists
Masterpiece with Dave Greenfield on keyboard! R.I.P I enoy last year in Sibenik, Croatia with Stranglers!

That's really sad. I try to teach my kids everything I know about music. They're not always interested, but we've bonded over a few songs and albums
The genius who is Dave Greenfield, sadly is no longer with us. R. I. P fella.
One of the greatest punk songs with Dave Greenfield's characteristic sound. Such musicality - brilliant band!
Well said!

I remember the same with the Fall of the Roman Empire. I heard it crash, it was a Wednesday,
Very monty-python-esque, this video, but you have to admit this is just a great song and certainly fits 'em.
