      I don't know. It kind of bothers me a little because some of these continuity errors could have been avoided like young Harry changing his T-shirt before he arrived on the island. But then if they wanted Cher in the movie, the mother role was probably the best way to fit her in.

      I wouldn't say bother per say. When I was watching Mamma Mia 2, I couldn't help but think that something was off. In fact I mentioned it to my friend who saw the movie with me as we were walking out of the theater. I told her I thought the sequence of who she was with was off and that I would have to watch the first one again. Such a hardship :)

    My theory about the first one is:
    Donna thinks her mother is dead because, when Donna told her she was pregnant, her mother told her to not dare to comeback. So she thinks she is dead, because she knows nothing since then

    Most of these didn't bother me at all, I passed them off as Donna`s interpretation of her own memories. The only thing I did notice was that in the first film Sam says that he and Donna conceived the idea of the hotel and he drew up plans for it on a napkin. That could have been a really cute scene.

    I just can't get over Donnas death..it's never even explained or anything they just kinda throw that into your face “yeah your favourite character is suddenly dead for no reason, deal with it.“
    This is just so horribly sad that it overshadows the funny moments. I mean they didn't have to kill her off right? It would still be sad enough with all the flashbacks to young donna and the nostalgia.

      That's just it too many inconsistencies and for what? So Ol Parker could get a smack on the back and a huge raise? Eyyy he didn't think it out at all it has so many issues in terms of plot. I think many people like it beause the singing and acting are great, but the story and directorial choices were poor in my opinion. Go watch the first one then immediately watch this it makes zero sense. Though if they make a 3rd they could explain the Donna death, but I think it would be more true to say she died in some boating accident, though knowing these guys they'll probably say it was cancer because THAT hasn't been done a million times or anything.

    2. In the first film, Rosie had never met Bill. In the second, young Rosie had a crush on him.

    • @victoriasilveira6761
      @victoriasilveira6761 6 лет назад +20

      Lauren Waksman the order is correct. You see, in the original movie Harry said he met her in Paris and when after Donna. In the new movie he misses the boat, so he gets late. In that time she met Bill on the way to the island, but doesn’t get to sleep with Donna. At the island she met Sam, after he fled, Bill showed up again and this time he had his, and then we have Harry again on the island where she shows him around when he surprises her

    • @kgal1298
      @kgal1298 6 лет назад +5

      She slept with Sam first, then Bill then Harry. Go back and watch the first movie it's quite clear from the beginning in Mamma Mia one the order is off. Harry was supposed to make it to the island with his guitar and never did so they ended with Bill and her sleeping together.

    • @victoriasilveira6761
      @victoriasilveira6761 6 лет назад +9

      Donna and Harry slept together BEFORE the island. Once she’s there: first she sleeps with Sam, then Bill, and as it said in the first movie “Harry showed up out nowhere”, it’s implied that Donna and Harry had something before, and in the first movie Harry says he met Donna in Paris and then when after her in Greece. He was just late.
      The order on the island is correct.

    I have mixed feelings about this movie. I can't say I didn't liked it at all but I have some issues with it. I have to say that I didn't feel much of the ''Greekness'' that the first movie had... Maybe because I knew that they weren't filming in a greek island this time. Somehow I missed the greek culture if I make any sense... I know that the way they wanted to present ''Greekness'' in these films is through the eyes of a foreigner who loves Greece but I still feel the first movie did it right and the second, not so much. Also the very fact that Donna had died made me not to enjoy this movie as much as I would like. And the personality change of Donna's mother. I always imagined her to be a strict mother who was ashamed of her daughter getting pregnant at age 20 without even knowning the father and told her ''not to bother to come back home''. Maybe because of the shock of her daughter's death she had a change of heart? Still not buying it. Despite all that I really LOVED the music as always. I guess it is the most important think. Mamma mia is all about the awesome music of ABBA afterall.

  • @IxiaRayne
    @IxiaRayne 6 лет назад +373

    I noticed most of the differences, but honestly that’s not what I watched the movie for. I wanted to have fun with ABBA tunes and have a great time with my family. Which I did.

      They are supposed to be fairytale like. Not all of it is unrealistic tho either. Its supposed to be representative of real life experiences. That is what musicals in this style and art form convey. Just like comedy movies. Stuff happening in the neighbors is soo unrealistic. But in order to tell its story in the style and art form that is intended, that is how its done. Also, most movies have unrealistic aspects. But it doesnt mean every part of the movie is unrealistic either. Most movies are forms of escapism for humans ourselves! They are a way of escaping into another world, another life for a little bit. To provide a lesson, a feeling, a new perspective. There are many things that come into play in storytelling and the realistic and unrealistic aspects come in a package together along with any form of art. Life itself has many moments or experiences that one could call 'unrealistic' but it happens. It depends on your perception and your context of what you believe is unrealistic or what. But this movie has tied the two aspects of realism and surealism beautifully into a piece that many can enjoy

      since they did a pretty unclear job at making time known throughout the film its not incredibly clear but if the time was somewhat close between Sam and Bill I think it could be either of them cause when Donna started throwing up that could be because Sam got her pregnant a month or so ago and she is now expirencing things like sickness or if there was a sizable gap between the two like a few month between them then it was probably Bill. One things for sure, its probably not Harry @@emillycalmon3456

      @Maria Ferrao Actually, it is Bill. The writers from the first movie came out and said it in an interview. Added, in the first movie, we learn that Donna got the money for the B and B when Bill's aunt, Sophie (ie the woman who helped Donna birth Sophie and the mother of the owner of the bar in the second movie) gave her the money when she passed away. Bill says he always thought the money went to family and it did, his daughter and baby mamma. But the second movie heavily implied it was Sam who is the father. with all the time line mishaps, it is easy to think it was Sam, but again, it is Bill.

    Sophie's age was messed up quite a lot as well, because Donna apparently got pregnant around 1979/1980 so in 2018 Sophie would have been 38, but when talking to Cher she says that Cher was 25 years to late to be her grandmother. Also in the first movie she says she was 20 and that was in 2008, so by that logic she would be 30 in the 2018 film. So technically she has 3 different ages throughout the two films?

      The first film is set in the 2000s, you can tell by the clothes of the characters and the low technology (no cell phones, computers), so if Sophie was born in 1980, she was 20 years old in 2000. If the second movie is set 10 years later, then it's the year 2010 and Sophie's 30 years old.

    the biggest thing i noticed is that in the original, sam draws up plans for the hotel on the back of a menu, meanwhile in the sequel the farm house already exists and is simply built up.
    also im surprised they didn't hint more at bill's great aunt sofia in the sequel ( i think she is supposed to be the greek lady who owns the farm house?),
    also also, i'm disappointed that they didn't draw more on the legend of aphrodites fountain in this one.
    and finally, one inconsistency that bugged me in the sequel is that donna breaks the entire stiarcase trying to slide down the railing, but then it is magically restored?

      yes, I kept waiting for the movie to reveal the greek lady to be Bill’s great Aunt. I loved both movies but very disappointed in the lack of care the writers put toward continuity- a simple film-making 101 principle. If viewers can easily catch blatant inconsistencies, I think the writers should have prevented them, even the grandmother. Cher could have appeared in the flashbacks instead resembling Donna’s rant where her friends accused her of sounding like her mother. That would have been funny.

      My idea is Bill. He's blonde, blue eyes, Donna too. Cher in the movie is also blonde. But her grandfather is not. The others are brunette, yes one of them has blue eyes but, brown hair is a dominant gene over blonde hair. So, must be Bill.
      Also, Sophie was named after Sofia, Bill's mom.

    • @hattie7465
      @hattie7465 6 лет назад +8

      Brown eye alleles and brown hair alleles are dominant so bill must be the father in order for Sophie to have blonde hair and blue eyes

    • @jaymierichardson-stevens5119
      @jaymierichardson-stevens5119 6 лет назад +14

      It could be any of them, even with the genetics. Both my parents have dark hair, one has hazel eyes and one has green. I'm blonde with blue eyes and definitely related to them. Even though dark hair and eyes is dominant, if they carry the recessive gene it cant be passed down and with Donnas blonde hair and blue eyes it would have only increased the chances.

    I have the best idea for what it should have been. 5 years after the first one, Sophie and Sky return to the island for Thanksgiving at Donna’s... as do Rosie, Tanya, the dads, etc... the first time everyone’s been together since the wedding 5 years ago! The vibe would be less sunny and beachy and more Thanksgiving-y.... oh and Donna’s alive and welcomes everyone. So once the big gang is all together, they cozy up next to the fire and ask Donna to tell the story of how she met all three dads. Then we’d get the whole flashback story from the movie... basically it would be way less of the modern-day story and way more of the prequel story (and the prequel story would be where we get all the sunny beachy vibes). And then at the end of the night (once the prequel story is done being told by Donna), everyone wipes the tears from their eyes and Thanksgiving is over. That would be so easy and quick for Meryl to do because it would be mostly flashbacks. And she could still perform My Love My Life with Sophie at the end maybe when Sophie leaves the island with her family.... and Donna could hug her granddaughter during the song so we can all bawl 😃 I feel like that’s so good.... the Thanksgiving vibes would set it apart visually from the first movie... no one would have to die... we’d still get the amazing flashbacks of young Donna....

    i myself didn't pay any attention to the differences between the two movies. I really liked the first one when I saw it. I knew 90% of the songs because I grew up having parents who listen non stop to 70s and 80s music so I knew a lot more of the ABBA songs in the first one. I saw the second movie just yesterday and cannot stop listening to all the songs. I loved the songs in Mamma Mia Here We Go Again and absolutely loved Lilly James singing them. Before I saw Mamma Mia 2, I was told it wasnt as good as the first, but I have to say that I really enjoyed it and like those songs a little bit more than the first movie. It could be the fact that since Lily James is much younger than Meryl Streep that I like the secind movie better but other than that both are great movies!!

    Donna said in the first one “I *bet* it’s my mother, she *never* said it *definitely* was her which explains why her mother was in the second one. That was an off note for me even in the original film. "Our Last Summer" was originally released in 1980, 13 years after 1967's "Summer of Love", so it made perfect sense. When the "Mamma Mia" stage musical premiered in 1999, it was 32 years after so still plausible enough. (Strictly speaking, if Sophie was conceived in 1967, and she's 20 during the original story, Mamma Mia should have been set in 1988.) But the filmmakers set the original film in 2008 and the prequel scenes in 1979, long after the "time of the flower power". Unless we assume that it took hippies 12 years to discover Kalokairi...

    Yes, the order in which Donna met the guys in the second movie really bothered me! I just kept thinking, "That's not right!" I mostly noted the eye color difference between younger Donna and older Donna. I still love both movies, though. Maybe a difference--did we have any indication in the first movie that Rosie knew Bill in the past? I don't remember it, if there was. But in the second movie, she met him and was crushing on him when they were younger.

    • @alangin6998
      @alangin6998 6 лет назад

      I don't think it was mentioned in the original movie, but in the play, Rosie specifically remembers Bill, calling him the "awesome Aussie" (he was an Australian, Bill Austin, in the play, not a Swede). And both Rosie and Tanya remember Harry "Headbanger" in the play.

    I didn’t really get into the movie too much cuz I didn’t feel the relationships yknow. In the first one, when they described the relationship she had with each boy, it seemed like they all actually had memories and built, significant bonds. I jus didn’t feel that watching the second one. It felt more like one night stands then leaving straight after and I didn’t feel any connection between Sam and Donna. I’ll just pretend like the second movie didn’t happen cuz I like to believe that their relationships were so much more fun and significant than they were in this one. Also, I recon it would been a nice touch to show Donna writing in her diary and also to have the movies to really embrace to 70’s hippy vibes the first movie suggested. I think the girl who played Donna was really good tho!!! Really captures her personality. Also, maybe I missed it but did they ever say why Donna died?

      Could not agree more. I felt like the relationships were empty and not at all how they were portrayed in the first one. I didn't care about these guys. I felt they were flat. Kayti Dickinson I think it can also be complicated for actors to wear contacts for 10-15 hours a day and if it falls or moves then the eyes tears up, so there’s make up and all.
      That is actually why they didn’t give Emilia Clarke purple contact lenses in Game of Thrones.

    1. How Donna died
    2. How Sky met Sophie and how long they've been in a relationship before they were "matried" in the first movie
    3. Both the movies didn't mention Sky's sides of the stories! Like who are Sky's parents?
    4. Sophie's best friends are not there.
    5. How can Sophie be pregnant that fast while Sky literally just returned back?
    6. How did Sky managed to return to Kalokairi? The movie did explained about Bill and Harry but not Sky
    7. If Sophie told Sky to postpone their marriage, they should've been married already in the second movie did they?
    8. The second movie didn't clear enough to explain how Tanya and Rosie's relationships ended
    These bugged me when I watched the second movie

  • @Qualimar

    The first film also sort of implies Donna's mother was religiously strict - "Don't you sound like your mother!" "It's Catholic guilt" - and that Donna and her mother never spoke again because Donna had sex and got pregnant outside of wedlock. 'Here We Go Again' plays Ruby as much more of a vain, selfish hedonist who just was not ready to become a grandmother.

      From what I heard (and I'm sorry I don't remember what video it was in) Donna's death was written in because Meryl Streep doesn't do sequals. It's just something she hasn't ever done and so she was only willing to do the movie if it was a very small roll. That is of course just what I heard on the topic from one video...wish I could remember. Worth looking into though. =)

      I wish they said how she died tho. If the timeline is correct, she had Sophie at 20 and so she would’ve been 45 , 44 when she died. Anyway not believing the age they’re trying to pass off for donna’s friends ? They’re suppose to be the same age as Donna which is 44 and they look like they’re in their 50s/60s. Same with sam

    I wish in the second one they spoke about Harry being gay and if he ever had a lover after the first one. They seemed to completely gloss over that. and I wasn’t buying how her and Harry had sex either because he seems such a gentleman and for him to just ask her to be his first without really knowing her seemed out of character. Something that maybe bill would’ve done. Last point, anyone else think that bill is Sophie’s dad??

    Fantastic analysis again Jan, just like your video about why they killed off Donna. I learned a lot from both of them. Your explanation of the diary discrepancy makes perfect sense; they didn't have enough time to get in two encounters with Harry. That's why I wished they had made a pure prequel, which would have given them a lot more time to get the backstory correct and to more fully develop the younger characters. In particular, I would have liked to see more of the life of the Dynamos as a girl group, and also more exploration of Tanya's wild side ("What do suggest we do with three men?" "Now that takes me back.") But I do understand that they needed the original cast and Cher for box office purposes.
    I like what you said about them not wanting to be constrained by throwaway lines from the first movie.

      Sofia is in the movie. Bill says when they get on his boat, "I actually have an elderly relative who helped me buy this boat." Also her son has the same blue eyes that Bill has.
      When Donna and Bill are sitting at the table in the bar Sofia comes up to them and kisses Bill on the forehead at which point Donna is introduced to Sofia by name. This is hard to catch because it happens while Tanya and Rosie are talking about Bill just outside.
      Sofia gives Donna permission to live in her farmhouse and obvious she leaves the property and some money to Donna when she passed away sometime after Sophie's birth.

  • @kevinujoodha5985

    The biggest one that I noticed was that the ages don't make sense. In the original movie Sophie was 20 years old, as quoted in the movie. So that means that twenty years ago is when Donna had graduated college and went to Greece (as seen in the second movie). So sometime in that range is when she got pregnant with Sophie. Let's assume she was somewhere around 22 after graduating college, so that means in the original Mamma Mia Meryl Streep (58 at the time) was playing a mother who was roughly 43 years old. Same goes for Pierce Brosnan (54 at the time) and Stellan Skarsgard (56 at the time). The ages just dont match up... not a big deal and something that doesn't make a difference on the enjoyment, but it was something I noticed.

      kate yeah ik about the Meghan and Harry thing but the media haven’t actually made it up because Lily actually looked into her family tree and found it out. Meryl even commented saying “amazing to think that we share jeans and genes” so they are clearly both aware of it and know who their ancestors are. With the Meghan and Harry thing they didn’t know about what the media were saying and if they did then it wasn’t confirmed cos they didn’t comment. Meryl and Lily have both commented and said how excited they are to be related. They are a lot more closely related than I am to a celebrity like Beyoncé for example so they are actually family technically. I was just saying that it’s a weird coincidence that lily was playing the younger version of Meryl and they are actually related
