I believe they chose not to reveal how Donna passed because they wanted the audience to care more about how she lived rather than how she died

Thadd Flavin I agree however it’s kind of odd that it was just a thing they everyone “accepted” instead of it being like horribly unexpected considering she was only about 45 when she passed

I thought Meryl’s part in the movie was perfect. The moment between Sophie and Donna in the church, it was almost as if she was there for Donny’s baptism even though she wasn’t. And her appearing in the curtain call scene, it was if she was the musical guardian angel watching over everyone.
Lily did such a good job as Young Donna, I didn’t miss Meryl too much; she got all of the nuances and singing style down pat.

    I love mamma mia 2 it's a great sequel
But I have to admit although there are fun moments and great songs you can't strip of the sad feeling
Mamma mia 1 just was fun throughout the whole film and left you with a good feeling
Mamma mia 2 is great but you walk out of the cinema both happy and very very sad
    But that's life isn't it
I definitely think that mamma mia 2 has much more emotional depth but sometimes you only need a fun and easy movie like mamma mia 1, where you can forget lifes miseries
But I do love both films

      Please note Contains
      Mama Mia 2 Spoilers Below
Marie R Exactly, but it also seems the humor & very joking fun which you can obviously see Young Donna brought that in the past portion was missing other than men attractions from the friends Rosie & Tanya in the present portion. We all laughed when Donna & Rosie and Tanya were together! We know that the loss of Donna is difficult and hard but the fun Shouldnt stop because of Donna. In some ways is like Rosie & Tanya put the fun Dynamo thing to bed because of Donna's absence. When Sophie said she wanted to do a Dynamo thing performance with Rosie & Tanya I was excited for something special it could have been them singing Mama Mia with Sophie. Sophie can sing a sad song tribute but to see the one time her as the Dynamo's jumping to sing something amazing tribute I was surprised not because a new song but a rather sad or emotion song. Tanya & Rosie had to cheer Sophie up not just with lessons but by the humor & so funness they had with her mother. Donna loved her friends for the laughter bond they share letting loose portion. X*

I was really dissapointed to see that Donna wasn't alive. After watching the movie twice I realised that the whole story is mainly about Donna and what I wanted to see in the second movie is her present life with the love of her life: Sam. To see them apart because of death was too much for me.
They could have come with a better idea, as her travelling or visiting her friends or ANYHTING but killing our dancing queen.

I think it would be better if she got into some sort of accident and was in a coma the whole movie and we of course still see her backstory but then at the end of the movie she finally wakes up from the coma and is alive! that would have been better than her dying

I watched the second Mamma Mia movie recently a few days after rewatching the first movie that I hadn’t seen in a long long time - I absolutely love Meryl Streep as Donna and was really disappointed that she was dead by the second movie - I feel like it would have been so cool if Donna got pregnant again right around the same time as Sophie and they went through there pregnancy journey together or Donna isn’t pregnant but we get to see her as a grandma or even her continuing new life with new husband Sam !

Well, we'll see what happens if they make another one! Things said on the red carpet during a night full of praise and celebration aren't always what happen in the cold light of day. And that's not a criticism of either MS or anyone else. Yes, she did enjoy making MM1 but she also didn't want to retread that in this film.

Exactly my idea!!! Would’ve made total sense if she and Sam were off on a long adventure around the world and in her absence Sophie and Sky had taken over management of the hotel. Then Donna and Sam could’ve returned for the grand reopening!!! There could’ve been a great but awkward reunion scene between Donna and her mother. Instead they made so much of this movie entirely too melancholy! Also, they completely changed some of the facts from the original film. Young Sam, Harry, and Bill look nothing like the way they were pictured in the first film! Also, in the first film they alluded to the fact that Donna’s mother was very conservative and also dead. I love Cher but that character made no sense at all. I love the original film and have probably watched it with my daughter a hundred times or more. This sequel had a few joyful moments but was mostly just sad. Very disappointing.

My mom & I saw it opening weekend. It was very sentimental since we saw the first one for my birthday. We were both sad to realize that Donna had died ( didn't pay close attention to many trailers). However, I think the story held up very well & the scene with Meryl almost brought us to tears. Since she was not a major role this time, I'm glad the writer went with the idea that she was dead rather than alive, but just not there.

I had avoided any and all spoilers so at the movie theater, when I understood Donna had died, I initially felt disappointed ... I reasoned, oh well, it's more of a prequel, so they wanted to concentrate on her background story ... Still not feeling it ... But as the story continued and Donna (Meryl) finally appeared to Sophie ... WoW ... I simply loved it !!! It brought me to tears !!! ... And at the end, the public in the movie theater (in Puerto Rico) did something that is rarely seen (only done at very few choice movies) : we clapped !!! ... I loved the story !!!!

i think that Donna's death helped a lot to improve the others characters because with Meryl in the movie all the attention goes to her. So that beautiful scene at the end was perfect and more than enough to let the others actors shine and be able to see more screen time of the amazing talent of Amanda and Lily.

I loved the movie and watched it three times already. Meryl Streep was indirectly the main character and her small part in the movie was a very good story line. I cried my eyes out during the scene in the church when she sang with Sophie. That particular song goes through my mind often and it's such a beautiful song knowing I having a daughter myself. Donna was a loved character and bringing her back at the end was one of the highlights of the movie.

This movie was so beautiful! Donna’s death did upset me but it was also kind of bittersweet. I couldn’t stop smiling through most of the movie, especially the big group performance at the end! The scene with Sophie and Donna was so well done, too. The transition from Lily to Meryl was perfect, and Donna’s leave from the scene was so beautiful and really broke me down. That beautiful smile fading into white. So amazing. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did. I’ve seen it twice already! And I definitely cried more the second time. Why? No idea. Maybe because I knew it was coming! Also, did anyone stay for the post credit scene? Hehe

I enjoyed the sequel, but not as much as the original. Donna's absence left a big hole in the contemporary story line. That void was mostly filled well with the flashback scenes and the great performances of the younger actors, especially Lily James. I think the story could have accomplished the goal of having less Donna by having Donna absent from the island for the past year due to cancer or some other illness. The hotel has been closed since she left but Donna tells Sophie to get on with her life and have a grand re-opening. The rest of the story plays out the same except at the end, Grandma Cher shows up with Donna in tow, having recovered from an experimental treatment of some sort funded by grandma because she wants to be part of the family again.

  • @kp22kc
    @kp22kc 6 лет назад +3

It would have been just as easy to have Donna off somewhere (traveling with Sam, at a hotel management seminar or taking care of a sick friend) and get stuck by the hurricane like all the other hotel opening guests and then have her show up at the end at the same time. She wouldn't know that Sophie is pregnant until close to the end anyway so the My Love My Life song would have worked perfectly. Why kill off a main character when they can just as easily be kept alive.

My daughter and her friend group set up a mom-daughter viewing of MM2. My daughter is not normally one to cry at movies, so when she reached over and squeezed my hand and I looked over to see her sobbing, I saw that the movie was affecting her as much as it was me. We held hands through the entire final scene in a memory I will always hold dear (and I think she will, too). I was deeply disappointed about Donna's death, but all things considered I would say I loved the movie. Like you, I wish they had chosen a different story line that could have kept MS out of most of the script, but they didn't ask me. :) It's a beautiful story, and it was beautifully acted by the whole cast. I will always see both movies as a bonding experience for my daughter and me, and that will always make them special.

It was not only the absence of Streep, but all the irregularities through out. They could have made the male characters looks and the story line more cohesive to the original. They not only killed Donna but revived the mother. I just did not like it.

I have been feeling quite low in spirit lately and this film has been exactly what I needed to lift me out of the doldrums. Streep's appearance at the end was just enough and perfect. She has a brilliant voice and is a great actress, but I find Streep has become a bit of an over actor. - A kind of caricature of herself in the roles she has played of late. She made absolutely the right decision not to be in the movie too much because her greater presence may have over shadowed the younger cast, whom I loved. They brought a freshness to the storyline and took me back to the seventies. The music has been so revitalised and made relevant to a new generation of ABBA fans. The young cast can all sing and dance. It can't be easy playing a younger version of such an established and much loved older cast. I have to say, I'm with the performers when they say they thought that the sequel felt better. For me, it most certainly is better. I want to watch it again and again, unlike my reaction to the first, which is fun and who doesn't love ABBA songs? However the screeching and pitchiness really hurt my ears in the first Mamma Mia. In fact I didn't want to see Mamma Mia 2, because I couldn't take the high pitch of Amanda's voice in some songs and Meryl's over the top rendition of the winner takes it all (though, credit where credit is due, Meryl can really work those vocal chords), I can listen to her better than I can watch her singing that song. However, my daughter showed me some previews and I just had to go and see the movie. It is a joy to watch. Emotional in places. I can't deny I also sobbed my heart out. Brilliant performances by the whole cast. Loved Cher, she was just what was needed to build up an exciting climax to a party scene. Nonetheless, my favourite bit that puts a huge smile on my face has to be Waterloo.

As a massive Mamma Mia fan, the shock of Donna's death overshadowed the movie for me. I was just very sad, and the Christening scene with Donna and Sophie finished me.
A brilliant movie! Lily James is perfect as the young Donna. It was wonderful to see the amazing original cast again (who somehow have stayed as youthful as they were 10 years ago), and it was amazing to have Sher and gorgeous Andy Garcia join the cast.
I will see it again to truly appreciate it for the great piece of art that it is and will no doubt watch the 2 movies back to back many times 💞

I have the best idea for what it should have been. 5 years after the first one, Sophie and Sky return to the island for Thanksgiving at Donna’s... as do Rosie, Tanya, the dads, etc... the first time everyone’s been together since the wedding 5 years ago! The vibe would be less sunny and beachy and more Thanksgiving-y.... oh and Donna’s alive and welcomes everyone. So once the big gang is all together, they cozy up next to the fire and ask Donna to tell the story of how she met all three dads. Then we’d get the whole flashback story from the movie... basically it would be way less of the modern-day story and way more of the prequel story (and the prequel story would be where we get all the sunny beachy vibes). And then at the end of the night (once the prequel story is done being told by Donna), everyone wipes the tears from their eyes and Thanksgiving is over. That would be so easy and quick for Meryl to do because it would be mostly flashbacks. And she could still perform My Love My Life with Sophie at the end maybe when Sophie leaves the island with her family.... and Donna could hug her granddaughter during the song so we can all bawl 😃 I feel like that’s so good.... the Thanksgiving vibes would set it apart visually from the first movie... no one would have to die... we’d still get the amazing flashbacks of young Donna....

I walked away with mixed feelings from this movie. I loved the prequel aspect but thought it was very unnecessary for Donna to be dead. In fact I hated that part of the story. Amanda did an awesome job with Sophie & I can see why she preferred this one over the first. I also hated not seeing Donna married to Sam. I wish they did it more as a flashback or put the movie 10 or 15 years in the future. I would feel better about Donna’s death if that much time had past. I was thrilled to see Meryl at the end. This movie really was an ocean of emotions.

In my opinion, Parker's decision about making Donna dead was absolutely bad! He could make a lot of scripts in this situation. If I were him, I would send Donna for a trip, exactly the same as when she was young and then I would show retrospection scenes with Lily. Meryl wouldn't play a big role, she would appear at the final scene, coming back from her trip and Sophie would tell her she is pregnant. It could be a really touching scene, when Donna realizes that she will be a grandmother. It's too difficult to understand why Donna died, especially when we don't know what happenned to her.
