Yay Marcia! I hope you do get back into sewing. I truly love to sew even though some garments don't turn out how I had hoped. To keep you motivated, feel free to join our weekly Zoom Sewing Circle chat. It's every Saturday morning at 7:00 am PST. We've got a great bunch of ladies and we chat about sewing, fabrics, ask others for advice, etc. If you'd like to join, just send an email to pollysew22@gmail.com and I'll send you the link to our zoom chats.
When you were talking about the pattern for the shirt you cut in a 16 for your shoulder, it made me think of the Nancy Ziemann, point and pivot method. She shows how to adjust while starting with the shoulder width. This whole video series is available on the Pfaff youtube channel. It is in all one video called sewing with nancy fitting finesse.
I start projects and quit half way more times than I care to admit! So you're not alone and don't be embarrassed! Thank you for sharing this video, very inspiring ❤
very interesting! I haven't done any pattern drafting, but I have used the SEWIST patterns and my measurements to print out basic pattern shapes for blouses and dresses. these have fit very well. I can then use these to compare to purchased patterns to know where to adjust those. I'm 64 and have several fitting issues to address so it's nice to have much of that already taken care of with SEWIST (not affiliated) (full low bust, long waist, forward shoulder, forward head, tummy, etc.. haha). thanks for your video!
Everything you said I have been there and stopped sewing for a few years as I chose thee wrong fabric the fit was wrong etc I am now on a mission to toile to only make clothes that fit lifestyle and wardrobe. Thanks for sharing xx
Hi Yvonne! I'm glad to hear you're sewing again. I've been where you've been too - stop sewing because of frustration. But I periodically take some time to reflect and use it as an opportunity to grow. That's why I'm focusing on 8 patterns. I plan to toile, toile, and toile until I get a good fit and understand the process! Thank you for watching and commenting!
My seggestion for your pants would be to look at the Crooked Hem--she shows in great detail how to do the top down center out method. It is a game changer.
Great tip, Sharon! I've heard so much about the top down, center out method; and have watch several videos about it. I haven't seen the Crooked Hem, but definitely plan on watching it now that you've suggested it. I mean, who doesn't love a game changer!
You are most definitely not alone with the “ put a project away cause it needs tweaking” instead of realizing what a learning opportunity you have……most definitely 😊✌️
Thanks for the encouraging words, Bonnie! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that has "a pile". You know, when I see other youtubers showing their wonderful makes and not their mistakes... I forget that they probably had their own problems too! Take care and have a good week! Are you currently sewing anything at the moment?
@@pollysews I’m rediscovering sewing, it’s been a while. I have the Violet top by Colette Patterns cut out and waiting for me to begin. I thought it would make a really pretty pajama top for my first version of the pattern but I find myself not making the time to get it started. Must get over the fear of failing and get on with it. Just found your channel and I like the way you talk to us, looking forward to seeing more of your content. ✌️
Thanks for the info! I actually do that now, but it took me a couple years of sewing to realize I should have been using my high bust measurement to pick my size. I think I always knew it, but just didn't feel comfortable using a smaller size because I'm so used to being an XL. I've been having much more success using the high bust measurement and grading out.
Hi - Our bodies are SEW fickle! Been there, done everything you have, more than once. I'm, a little by little, upgrading my wardrobe but don't have a strategic plan. I DO like the V1993 and put it on my list. Hopefully, it is a current pattern. Good luck and know that your sewing experiences are universal. You are not alone dumping projects. It should be called "Ripping Seams" not sewing. I look forward to seeing your wardrobe evolve. Happy sewing! 🥰 Bernadette
Thanks for the encouragement, Bernadette! Yes, V1993 is a current pattern. I'm looking forward to making the jacket as well as the pants. Are you currently sewing anything at the moment? What is it?
@@pollysews YES! I got my sew-jo back. I posted 3 on Friday Sews Central yesterday. You can see them there. I believe I am the only Bernadette on that site. Thanks for your interest in what I am doing.🥰
You’ve got great plans and I cannot wait to follow along as you make all those garments that have given you trouble in the past. It’ll be a great way to show how much you’ve learned over the last little while. I have started doing some planning for the Fall, but I’ve been too focused on the immediate needs to really get into it. I plan on spending some time planning my Fall wardrobe when I get back from my trip in the middle of September. I need to get all my “fall/winter” clothes out of the basement and see what my needs are first.
I attempted B6856 too. I did the same thing cut a size 16 for my shoulders and did a FBA. But I just couldn't get the fit right so I gave up. Then I realized I already had the Itch To Stitch Bonn shirt which is almost the same style and has cup sizes. I made a 16D and had no trouble with the fit. Ive made two and will definitely make more.
Hi Adrienne! Thanks for mentioning the Bonn shirt from Itch to Stitch. I'm going to give the B6856 another try, but if it doesn't work, I'll be making the Bonn - lol!
Hello Polly! I just found your channel and subscribed right away 💞 love your style of communication and beautiful module wardrobe that I can’t wait to follow along ❤❤❤
Hi Cheryl! I'm glad you found my channel! Thank you for the nice compliments. I'm really excited about sewing my module wardrobe. I've started on my McCall's trousers (just tracing the pattern and cutting out most of the muslin) and will try to get my first muslin completed this weekend. Are you currently sewing anything?

Hi Polly, you’re not alone with abandoning projects or patterns that didn’t look or fit the way you hoped. I have patterns out now, preparing for my fall wardrobe. What day are you starting your trousers, maybe we can work on them together. They are on my fall plans list, as well as the companion jacket ( McCalls M8155 ). It’s labeled learn to sew (the trousers ) so, I hope it’ll be a bit easier to get a good fit. I have a few pieces of wool that I’d like to use so toile it is for me too.
Hi Stelly! I'll be starting my trousers this weekend. I'm helping my daughter move to So Cal on Friday and will be flying back on Saturday morning. I plan on tracing the pattern Saturday afternoon and starting on my toile/muslin that evening. Then just keep working on them sometime on Sunday and Monday (since Monday's a holiday). Would love to work on them together. We can even zoom if it's convenient for you.
@@pollysews that sounds awesome. I’m free Saturday evening. I’ll cut out my toile on Friday to have it ready for Saturday. My Sunday and Monday are a bit busy but, it would be nice if we could get together on Saturday evening.
Just found your channel and am excited to see your creations! Would love to see a video on how the zipper fly (without a waistband) is inserted on the Vogue 1993 pant. I have tried to follow the zipper fly instructions for a similar pattern-New Look 6660, which has a zipper fly without a waistband, and I couldn’t figure it out. Even called Simplicity to help with the instructions to no avail. Please consider a video showing this technique; would be SO helpful - thank you!
Hi Cassandra! So glad you found my channel too! Yes, I'll try to make a video when I make my pants with a fly zipper and no waistband. What a bummer that even Simplicity couldn't help you with your New Look pattern. I've made skirts with an invisible zipper and no waistband (just facings) but sewing a no waistband with a fly zipper will be new to me too! Hope to see you again on future videos. If you're interested in joining, send an email to pollysews22@gmail.com and I can send you a link to our calls.
I have narrow shoulders and a big boobs, and had the same problems you described. You'll get a really great fit if you measure your upper bust, use the size that corresponds to that. To have a really comfortable garment will require a full bust adjustment. There is a really good tutorial for this from Cashmerette. I promise you won't look back. Good luck!
Thanks, Sally! I'll definitely watch the video from Cashmerette! I've finally learned to use my upper bust measurement to choose my pattern size. I'm embarrassed to say that I've known that for several years, but just couldn't wrap my head around using a smaller size because I've been so used to buying a larger size in ready to wear just to fit around my bust. Can you believe I actually thought it was normal to have your shoulder seams droop off my shoulder?
Oh Angie, I'm so sorry. Thank you for the feedback! I'll do a better job going forward. I know what you mean - I see the same thing when I watch videos too. The pattern is B6856. 🧵
Thanks for your honesty. You've encouraged me to pick back up sewing.

Yup. Game changer. Nancy Zieman was a genius. It’s the easiest way you can alter patterns that I’ve found.
It is a game changer, it’s awesome!
I just threw one item away, too small and didn’t want to do it anymore, frustrated! Lol
Dizzy Quilts and Sews recently released a video about her experience with this method. She had very good results.
@@funkyneeniestuff I found Nancy ZIEMAN explained it easier for us “newbies” especially
Might I suggest you place a list of the patterns in the description also so that we can look them up online.

The plaid wool would make a great jacket d perhaps trousers to match.
I always pick my size based on my high bust measurement then grade out at the waist and hips. This gives me the right fit and always turns out great.
