NANO TANK MAINTENANCE AND RO FILTER GUIDE

  • Today, we'll show you how to do a water change on your nano tank - in under 10 minutes! It's been six weeks since Balazs has set up his kitchen nano aquarium for his wife, Dory. This is the perfect time to do the first large maintenance! He will also talk about the Reverse Osmosis unit (water purification and soft water production) and will show you two maintenance routines: a quick one and a longer/larger one. Having a good water change system has enabled him to do the water changes still every 2-3 days, and he plans to keep this routine for a more extended period - to keep the little planted nano tank algae free and healthy. Hopefully.

    Great video Balazas, Thank you for sharing!
    An idea for blocking out the light is to get some sheet metal, maybe pre-painted steel or plain galvanised or aluminised steel or even stainless steel but that will cost $$$ as it's heaps more expensive than plain sheet metal.. The pre painted sheet metal in Australia is known as Colorbond and comes in lots of colours. If you go to a roofing supplier or sheet metal workshop they often have scraps of strip they throw out. You want something 0.55mm thick.
    To fold it to your tank dimensions they may charge a few dollars, but shouldn't be more than that or they are ripping you off.
    To fold 90 degree angles, you can do it yourself with a piece of timber and something like a concrete step. Search you tube and you should find plenty of DIY tips on folding sheet metal.
    Good luck!

      @@GreenAquaShop Hi Balaz, when you open the tap at suction side of the hose, what is the pull force that will suck out the water to the other side of the hose? I understand the tap at the toilet end is open from the start, right? I think I'm missing something. Does closing and opening the tap from suction side of the hose can trigger the gravitation pull? Apologies for lack in understanding.

    Thank you so much for inviting us all over to your home again to see how you care for your own nano setup!
    I love the pre-filled drainage hose with the double taps. So much simpler to use than a siphon hose with hand pump.

    • @dpatten
      @dpatten 4 года назад

      If you don’t mind me asking, do you have the timers set up the same way for your home tank as those at work?
      Cardboard is a very available and low-cost solution to lighting at home for sure. I’m also considering making an enclosure to block ambient light. My nano sits on a stand on the eastern wall so I would construct a case that I can hang a blackout fabric onto. It would almost look similar to a puppet show booth you can see at carnivals or street show. Still looking through other options as well.

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  4 года назад

      Well, we are home at night, so co2 on at noon, lights on at 3pm, everything off at 11pm.
      Yeah, I think I'll go with a metal plate, an L-shape to cover the tank.

      @dpatten 4 года назад

      Timers to match time at home is very logical. Wish my daily schedule was consistent enough to do that too.

      There are many of us who only have the space and/or budget for nano tanks like the 60-P or smaller. All the issues you have and solve with your home setup are probably shared with all of us new aquascapers.
      The aquarium journey is especially tough for the beginners and your videos, resources and links have been amazingly helpful to getting me started at looking into solutions for our nano cube garden.
      If algae problems can arise from ambient light due to how we live in our homes and your unique shade creation fixes that problem... even if you don’t do a whole video I’m sure I and many others would love to see the finished shade photo and how it works out for you.
      Did I mention the layout was beautiful? Already inspired to re-scape or start another (maybe slightly larger) cube garden! I’ll have to check and see if I can legally collect petrified wood on a hike this spring! (Washington state)
      Thanks again for the great videos and insight.
      Always looking forward to Green Aqua content. Wish your shirts were available overseas, especially the mother/fckn/nature one ;)

    The percent of good water vs bad water depends on the water that comes from your tap. My father has extremely hard water with a ph in the upper 8’s, so he only gets 25% water to 75% waste.

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  4 года назад

      it does not depend on the water hardness, but it depends on the type of the RO filter and a lot depends on the pressure of the water - I forgot to mention this.

    I found a a simple solution to prevent light on the tank during « unwanted light » hours. I built a black coroplast (corrugated plastic) box that i fit around the tank and that I take out and simply fold and hide when i’m not using it. Super simple to build, super efficient because no light goes through, takes no space when not in use and low cost! I used painter’s masking tape to hold the panels together because it is flexible and also no chance of leaving glue marks on the glass if there is a problem. It cost me around 35$ to build for a 60-P and it is going to be good forever! 🤷🏼‍♂️👌🏼😁

    To block the sun from the tank, perhaps you can use sunshade/curtain? for car. There are many types but I saw one that has a suction cup and you can just roll the shade like a curtain. They can be easily remove and store easily. Not sure if you know what I mean.. Quite useful for blocking light while taking picture too 😁 The light/co2 timer is such a crucial information, I'm glad i found it out from your early tutorial, again very useful information for beginner like me. Keep on posting! Cheers!

    Thanks for the video, there is on the market some sensors that detect light and trigger and switch off any automation ( here Co2 solenoid plugged to a smart plug) and the very good thing is there is light sensors that can be set to trigger at a certain level of light 😉, i will try this soon.

    How cool to show your home aquarium .... good and less cost ... it would be black acrylic plates or transparent acrylic with black adhesive vinyl ... the ones we use here in Brazil ... you can do it in a U shape closing the front and the sides ... so the clarity will not pass ... and it is easier to remove ...

Anyways - keep up the amazing work and I look forward to whats next. best.
