Nice one pal, going to do this week. My 505 has been sat in the cupboard for around 15 years!! Used to use it blind!! Tech piano noise needed and this is the baby for that..well explained
I think it's better to remove the connector socket by desoldering it and then solder some female connectors to the board. That way you can just insert floppy disk cable with solid wires into the connectors. Same with the display. There is enough room inside and you can better unplug stuff, if you want more repairs later.
Thanks so much for this guide. I just followed it and installed a screen and replaced a couple of pots in a broken MC-505 i bought for cheap. I found that even with the 505 contrast at 1 I still had the squares showing so I added a 5k trim pot on PIN3 which enabled me to dial in the contrast even further.
One more thing I did differently was to de-solder the ribbon cable from the old screen and then solder it to a matching ribbon cable. I locked the join with some masking tape to stop the pins shorting and then connected as normal. This way I could avoid soldering directly to the board.
Glad it worked out for you 👍yeah I changed the display on a jx305 too and put a resistor on one of the pins (I forget which one) to help compensate for the contrast too... well done 👍
@@UnauthorisedService no worries it's not your fault, I just wildly underestimated the difficulty level and wildly over estimated my own ability. Stripped pads everywhere. It's a horror show.
@@UnauthorisedService ok so update, I got the unit playing sound again, thank god. I assembled it back together. and I replaced the resonance pot with the correct one and that works. so that's blessed. but yeah the screen is never gonna work. I do not have the ability to repair that. and I've really damaged the traces of the 14pin connector. it'd take a brain surgeon to fix that mess.
Possible to do this without the resistor to the backlight? Just bending down the metal posts that the screen screws in to clears enough space and no need to do any cutting. Great video
I think the resistor is needed to bias the contrast . You will have trouble reading the display otherwise. Yeah , whatever works for getting the display module to fit 👍
@@UnauthorisedService I've installed the display without a resistor and it works good. No contrast problem. Using a potentiometer would be ideal so you could controll the brightnes
So the resistor is for the backlight ( I forget you see). I did put a resistor in series to one of the pins in a jx305 screen replacement to give better contrast performance however , again I forget which one. Anyway ,glad you have success !

Hey man, I got an mc 505 and it doesn’t work . I sent it to a repair shop and the guy says the cpu doesn’t work after I just wanted him to fix the screen. It worked before that but now it doesn’t. Do you know anyone who can repair it?
If you lived nearby , which I guess you dont, I would have a look ...there are too many variables for me to second guess the fault. Check the cables are all correctly seated as noted in this video. Otherwise try synth diy forums or keep your eyes peeled for a bargain 505 on ebay . Good luck with that 👍

Thank you for the great information! My jx-305 came back to life after replacing the display!
Great .. Yeah I did a jx305 too... I think I added a resistor on one of the pins cant remember which.. to improve the contrast.

@@UnauthorisedService Thanks man!
I already reborn a Yamaha rm1x and now I am waiting for an mc505. I will take your video as a guide. Thank you!
Good luck with that 👍
@@UnauthorisedService will see in wich shape is it. Will informate you.
this has been by far one of the hardest repairs i have ever attempted, i've had a miserable time ngl
I've given up and probably completely destroyed the unit, very expensive way to learn I need to hire a synth repair tech.
Sorry to hear that ..I would assist you, but...

Hi I'm looking at buying the resistor, u remember what watt u used, they are 0.25 , 0.5 , 1 , 2 etc ? Thanks.
1/4 watt should be fine I think ...hope it works out for you if you attempt it 👍

There’s every chance yes 👍
Great video! Is there any way to replace the screen without soldering it? My soldering skills are not good enough to perform the repair :(
No 😩 get a fine point soldering tip and give it a go . The points that need attention for the swap , are not so small as you may think ✌️ ..
