I am absolutely stunned by the depth and the new perspective you share in this lesson. I'm working on my first RUclips documentary as we speak. This vlogumentary model you're describing is absolutely spot on and fills in some gaps in my approach that I can now think through much better. Thank you for your very cogent insights.
This video was like a film class, so much good information that you can tell comes from experience. I have only done a couple of stories but since they did not get a lot of views I stopped, but they were the most fun of anything I have done on YT. Your video makes me want to try again. Thanks.
Excellent tutorial. It takes time to become natural in your thinking to do all the stuff. Your experience is super helpful. I will have to watch this over and over again. Thanks a lot
Wow this is exactly what I was looking for. Been having trouble trying to tie certain parts into a story. It’s even harder trying to explain that to get the assistance you need to overcome it, but you knew exactly what I was talking about. Thank you!👍
Good stuff. I live in a small town. Seems hard to find new stuff to shoot, but really I’m just being lazy about telling a good story. Thanks for the ideas and motivation.
This is exactly the kind of content I've been wanting to make! Thank you so much for these amazing tips. You've definitely helped give me more direction. Can't wait to learn more.
Jeven you articulate this so well. Seems like I am really behind the times here but I really like the idea of a 'Vlogumentary'. Somehow this is when the real person reports but also brings their personality and perspective to a documentary. Thank you for that perspective.
I like the term "vlogumentary" as that feels more like what us adventure-seekers and overlanders are creating. On that note... Im curious (and I realize this video is years old) I understand that story is a huge difference between a meh video and a great video, but Im eager to see your process on how you create story on the fly. Love your stuff and much appreciate you sharing your knowledge so graciously.
Thanks for the video! I was searching for a word when I'm doing my videos - I think vlogumentary is the best word for it, esspecially for solo filmmakers.
I have a mountain biking channel but your videos have been helpful for me to think about my vidoes differently. Trying to create a story in my biking videos... If i'm going to a bike park, think about the story i could create. No longer just winging it. I've been working on getting more broll and more thought with voice overs. Need to adapt a little with what you share because I'm not necessarily vlogging but the tips help keep my viewers more engaged.
Thanks so much for your videos. Given me some great food for thought. Am in the middle of planning more films..have had some real success with one particular story...but trying to recreate that...and what comes next is really the challenge. (Feel a bit like a band with a 'one hit wonder'!) It's intersting what resonates and connects with people..and what falls flat! I was also interested in time..and you get your fims created quickly....I find I am working for months if not years on these "RUclips" documentaries...and have to figure out how to make the process much quicker! Thanks for all the ideas. Is quite the journey. Thanks!
Interesting. Im trying to work on some projects along these lines. This is useful. Ive got mostly tutorial content which does OK but I think lacks the story to connect with the audience.
Great piece of advice. I have seen so many videos on documentaries but nothing as insightful as yours. Your pointed reference to 'story' not being a beginning, a middle and an end with lots of desperate situations in between is worth a million dollars.
I've been watching you for some time Jeven and I have been finding myself mimmicking your style with out even realizing that I am. Thanks for inspiration 😁👍
I almost fell out of my chair when I heard you say something about starting or maybe filming the ending of a story first. I have filmed the ending first of more than 1 or 2 in my 25 years in the film making business. All were succesful and were accepted by The National Geographic Society for it's film series at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. I enjoy watching your videos. Best, Ken Creed
Jeven I would like to Thank you for giving me the inspiration to start my RUclips channel . You give me the hope the push and the challenge to start . Love to watch your channel .
Vlogumentary really descibes what I do on my channel. I go on hikes and adventures and try as best as I can do convey my feelings and experiences to the audience.
Brilliant video mate. I’m about to go on another ride with my son and was wondering about how to film it. I want to do something different from the series I made of our Outback trip last year. I’m going to try the vlogumentery approach. Thanks again you have inspired me. Mike
Thank you. Excellent video. Very helpful. One problem that I've run into is planning and building my production outline is that I tend to change directions so much that I end up reorganizing the clips and the story pieces once I see what comes out from the original approach.
Super advice. Just what I needed. I was amazed by Li Ziqi 's channel and was trying to study how she managed to do such immersive videos with views going through the roof. She is a good inspiration and would really like it if you could give us some tips based on her videos.
Thanks Jeven. Very useful stuff. I got a question: I'm not a RUclipsr and don't want to become one. I'm just a documentary creator. What would you suggest in terms of promoting the documentary/vlogumentary on RUclips, so people stumble over it? Keep up the great vids dude. You're awesome.
Thumbs up 👍 my friend! 🍭 So beautiful experience! I learned a lot from your video. You have a very unique way of expressing information, with these tips I try to improve my channel. 👍👌🤗🤗 I love explore the city by walking, thank you for sharing! ✌😃 watching from Saudi Arabia.
This is fantastic...as was the farm doc. On my other channel, I produce traditional documentaries in which I do not appear...but perhaps I'll try one in the style you're describing as well.
I'm really enjoying your videos. I have so much to learn every day. But while watching this video, it reminded me of Anthony Bourdain. His method of creating or even just discovering stories is very similar to yours. I'm so sorry that he is not with us, but I definitely understand what you are trying to say. I just need experience, for which I don't have as much time as you or many others - still, I'll try. Thanks for your advice.
Excellent tutorial - though I am trying to learn how to do desktop narrated news analysis for RUclips - but the principles you set out are helpful in that context too
Thanks, awesome tutorial. I would love to see you expand on Point 5 in a later video. Especially about using the 30 seconds sound capture to mask a cut in an interview. But also your music choices and edits, I watched your latest documentary and I kept saying to myself - right take note how he exits from this scene to the next, but I am so captured in the whole thing all I can do is watch, which to me means brilliant editing. I need to rewatch to try and capture it. I have only made 2 of my own so far, and already I can see many ways I could drastically improve. Cant wait for the next tutorial.
Just discovered your channel and all I have to say is WOW! You have amazing content and I am so envious of how easy your commentary comes across. Do I even have to mention your shooting style and editing? A++++ all the way. You just need more ways that I can give you my money :P
Man, thank you so much for sharing this info. You have been a tremendous help and inspiration to my process. Your insights have definitely helped put me on the right path. 👊🏾
I think of a vlog as someone talking straight to the camera on a stick or in their hand and they are basically making the video equivalent of a journal entry - an update on whats going on, what they are doing in that moment.
This title should be how to make a really great vlog. What makes this less of a doc, in my opinion, is when filming a subject you're capturing, let's say, a day in their life not how it pertains to the person shooting it. And if your part of the documentary then you're a narrator guiding the story. I only say this because we shoot 20 minute documentaries every week for our channel and we are not in them. Its on a topic with a subject and they guid us though their life. You do still have some good ideas but mostly for vlogs not documentaries.
Jeven pls sue RUclips - I literally searched for 20mins to find THIS video xD Merry Christmas! Woah I'm not in my documentaries but I invest a ton of work into the story in terms of a scenario - voice overs. How to go through the topic with the viewer. But I'm not on camera, simply b/c I don't have the right setup yet. My A-Roll are news paper articles, literature or quotes from scientists, cuts from any other documentary or report and/or famous ppl and such. My B-Roll is more dedicated to supporting or changing (transformative) the mood. And - one I just found out on my 2nd documentary - give some breath to the viewer xD Pacing is super important I guess. I do the music (and yes also epidemic sound it is awesome!) for mood and pace. Otherwise I'd edit until dooms day xD
If your the narrator shooting vlog style (handheld facing you), then vlogumentary works great. If it’s shot more traditionally, then documentary would be better.

Vlogumentary. I like it. 🥂
While this video is 3 years old, the advice is still super valid and useful! Thank you Jeven!

This video deserves a million views😮..and if it doesn't.. its helped me make a million views instead!! Thanks Jason. 🎉 Mr Blair

Vlogumentary WORKS!!! Thanks Jeven - added another 2 pages to my notebook of creator driven guidance.
The idea of a vlogumentary sounds really awesome, telling a story like this just sounds super engaging. Great tips! 👌🏼
This storytelling series is great! Please keep it coming.
Excellent tutorial. It takes time to become natural in your thinking to do all the stuff. Your experience is super helpful. I will have to watch this over and over again. Thanks a lot
I am a novice film maker and I'm doing a doco at the moment. This video was awesome. It gave me courage and enthusiasm. Thnaks mate. Great work :)
Vlogumentary. Definitely thats the word. Great video and super timely for the project im working on.

Thank you Jeven all this information is really helpful for all the content creators. We cannot wait for your upcoming uploads.
Best video on this subject so far!
The timing on this video is perfect ♥️ this is literally what I’m planning to do really soon
Try experimenting with shorts on a new channel to mix with long form content

Succinct. You make it sound easy while making it clear that you have to be thorough in your preparation. That’s the key isn’t it? Preparation.
Fabulous as always. I’m really learning so much from your experience and just need to be brave enough to relax in front of the camera! Thank Jeven.

Hi there, great video and many beneficial points on making a documentary :) so thank you. Quick question what video editing software do you use?
Really good information. Your content is great for new youtubers like us.

Well, I made the above comment at number 5. But number 6 really does complete the criteria for calling them "vlogumentaries".
this really help me a lot I want to create documentaries and this is wonderful tips I'm just nervous and scared tho.
Nice explanation. Big Fan Brother, from Delhi 🙏
Very useful information 🙏
Gotta save this for later, hoping to create a vlogumentary style video in 2021
