You are a boss babe. Love the detailed breakdown of your schedule. I went back to the 9-5 world a few years ago. You make me miss entrepreneur land. I studied writing, but I've been afraid to write for work since I finished college a decade ago. Why the hang-ups and anxiety about it? No clue. Please keep sending encouragement our way. I need it!

Thank you for this video. I'm always interested in hearing the particulars of how writers spend their day so I know what my day may or should look like as a writer.

I’ve recently decided I want to follow my passion as a writer. As a kid i was inspired by Beverly Cleary’s, Dear Mr. Henshaw, because I wanted to be Mr. Henshaw one day. Since I’ve been looking into how to get into freelance writing I’ve come across your page! With zero experience/credentials... where do I begin? Should I start my own blog as a way to showcase my ability to right well? Where can I find an example of “copy”? To a degree I understand the concept but I’m still unsure how exactly a copy piece is formatted or looks like. I’m a singer and an avid consumer of music so I’m considering that industry to be my niche. Could you give me examples on how to narrow that down when it comes to copy? Thank you in advance!!
Hey Jared Merideth! Have you seen my course on How to Become a Freelance Writer Step-by-Step? I recommend watching those 4 videos and following them step by step to get started. You can create your own blog, but it's not necessary. Swiped.co has some great examples of copy.
Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for these helpful videos. I only found you a few days ago and after just two or three videos, I feel so inspired and ready to start my copywriting journey. I’m doing this!!!! In the video you mentioned reading books about copywriting; can you recommend a few titles please? Thanks!
Totally! The recommended copywriting books are fairly standard and there are lots of lists. I like Breakthrough Copywriting, Influence, Story Brand, and Pitch Anything. :)
I enjoy watching your videos, you are a great speaker and provide great content thank you for sharing I look forward to learning more from you about this industry!
Hey Sarah, I was one of the very first person to take your first ever free course. You've helped me a lot. I wanted to ask you, if you could guide me the proper way to pitch to different blogs and publications.
Awesome! I really recommend focusing on cold emailing. Be sure you write it like a copywriter though... focusing on benefits to your client over your interests and qualifications. Too many people cold email like a resume. You are a business owner so it's important to present yourself like one :)
Dear Sarah, I am currently building my freelance copywriting website right now. Yet, I do not know what exactly I want to specialize in copywriting. My first choice was doing freelance website development and my second choice was to do freelance blogging in a specific niche (I love fitness, nutrition, motorcycles and cultures of the world) but would that make a sustainable income? Maybe I can combine the two? Thanks Sarah!
Hi Paul! I'm a strong believer in specializing & niching down. When you spread yourself thin it makes it harder to be an expert in anything. Typically this means you can't charge as much for your work... though not always. I'm always going to vote you stick with one thing!
Hey Sarah, Great video! I was just wondering, when you say you write 2 pieces per day, what does that mean? Like approximately how many words is that? Thanks.
It's totally possible to write 2 blogs per day. It takes many copywriters like 2 to 3 hours to research and write a blog of 1500-2000 words. But there are many types of copy that have a lower word count like emails, some types of web copy, or social media ads.
How have you noticed AI change the writing industry? And in regards to your schedule, do you notice your flow changing periodically? And if so, what do you do to go with that flow ?
I totally understand your concerns. Are the number of jobs in content writing declining? Yes. I do see AI replacing people who are doing low-quality, low-paying content on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. But those are the types of jobs I would never recommend you going after anyway. I actually think AI is a wonderful tool for copywriters to speed up their work. It'll help you brainstorm ideas, flesh out outlines, and things like that. Thank you for sharing Sarah!! A lot of this information is relatable and can help a freelance copywriter. --> One thing I would want to know is if you have ever traveled for a bit while also freelancing? I am a digital nomad and need to find a flow while my external world continues to change. Thanks again, love your content xoxo
Yes. The freedom to travel is one of the reasons I started copywriting. I've visited or lived in over 35 countries. Sometimes access to wifi is sketchy, but there are great hotspots on the market to help with that.
this is great I know im on the right track... was looking on avideo on how to build a potfolio didn't see you had one would love some suggestions just starting out as a copywriter
A common recommendation I give is to find a piece of awesome copy in your niche and rewrite it. Guess what the prompt was and then complete it yourself. To develop your portfolio I recommend reaching out to local businesses, reaching out to content and marketing agencies both local and otherwise, using job boards, and reach out to other copywriters and ask to take on their overflow. You can do it!
Anytime you write - especially for someone else - is an opportunity to improve. The more you practice, the better you become. Freelancing will allow you to have the schedule that works for you as well as work with clients you love!
