I'm so glad I watched this video. Coming from the journalism world, I've specialized in excellent content writing, but mastering copywriting (even though I understand it in theory) has been a tremendous pain point for me because I now realize that I've been thinking more like a content writer. Seeing them compared like this really helped to put me at ease about making the transition. Thank you.
I am starting my journey as a Freelance Writer, and your video has been helpful. I didn't know the difference, and now I am going to go into content writing. Thank you.
Goodness gracious what kind of person are you? 20 seconds into the video and I'm already bought in, 100 percent. Definitely I need such a radiant charm. In fact, I am subscribing immediately!
Thank you for this. I am just starting my freelancing journey and I have no idea what area of writing I should take. Now I know what area I can be comfortable writing or to be able to express myself more.
Though they might feel similar, there are huge difference between the two. If you can't figure out which one you want to do, start off by practicing both art forms and see which one suits your writing style best.
Wow! I love this explanation! Short, concise and to the point. I'm a content writer at heart, and have had a hard time wrapping my head around the art of copywriting. It doesn't help that I'm from Sweden, where none of the usual business strategies you see on RUclips really work. 😉 I always have to "translate" every advice to Swedish circumstances before using them. But this was very easy to get a grip on and to use in my own way of thinking. Thank you!
Interesting perspective. Ive always seen 'content' as the overarching umbrella...then you can segment further by 'types of content' Ie: Sales 'content' (sales letter, ads, vsl, advertorial) ; Engagement 'content' (videos, blog post, podcast, infographics, native)
Aaron Gagnon hey Aaron! Yes, you are right in that everything you mentioned is all technically “content”, in the way that all writing is words. However, the two terms “copywriting” and “content writing” are used in the industry to describe two very different skill sets. Whereas “content creators” can virtually mean someone who creates any sort of content - images, blogs, videos, etc - usually with the goal of engagement. Content writers are writers with the same goal. Copywriting is a much more specialized subset of online writing skills that requires more training and technique. It’s important to know the difference when you’re looking to hire a writer, and also for a writer to best position themselves when trying to find a client. Hope that helps 😊
I'm still the process of learning and polishing my English. Because I'm looking forward to take courses in the next year. I find you videos very useful (sorry for my lack of vocabulary haha) and your English accent so clear that It has helped a lot to practice my listening skills. Thanks
Yeah. I'm currently doing a copy writing course, I worked as a freelance theatre reviewer, before the pandemic hit, and I'd like to combine working from the office and working from home
‼️ Your content is EXCELLENT! I can’t believe I just today discovered you! Immediately subscribed! If you have a moment, would you mind answering this question: Is it really necessary to choose one or the other (content writing or copywriting)? I’ve heard differing opinions… but wouldn’t a truly skilled writer be more than capable of doing both jobs very well? This is very helpful. I was always confused and didn't even know if there was a difference. Would be good to see an example of copy and content side by side so I know what they are both like as a piece of writing.
I am green as grass with regard to becoming a copywriter. It is good to see the differences between content and copy writing presented in a clear way. I tend to write in the form of a story so I think I will lean more toward content writing.

Here’s my question Knowing what you know, if you weren’t in copy writing how would you go about hiring a sales copy writer. What would you look for ? What would you look out for? What steps would you go through? Thanks Alex! Keep doing your thing!
Hey Trevor! Great question. Perhaps a new video topic since it's a bit longer of a discussion... but I've had some luck using Upwork actually. I'd look to hire someone with lots of experience content writing (but some with copywriting). I'd ask to see a portfolio with any conversion stats or volume metrics if possible. I'd look for creativity first. If someone can write a great hook, they are 80% of the way there (in my opinion). I've also hired multiple writers at once and gave them all the same "copywriting project". For example, I hired 5 writers and had them all write a cart abandonment sequence for me - 5 emails, all the same product. While I did spend a bit of money to test them out, the best writer was a clear and obvious winner, and now I have an awesome writer on my team!
@@AlexCattoni Thats a great response. I like the idea of looking for their past conversions rates (although on upward their bound to lie, which would bring me to my next question, but lets leave that for now) Upwork is becoming my second home lol. Thanks for the quick reply
I see the distinction, but it seems like being able to do both is a very useful skill too. I mean you are creating content -about- copywriting, so clearly it's possible to do both successfully. I think content writing comes more naturally to me, I'm a fiction writer first and foremost, but I'm going to teach myself this skill, even if it doesn't come naturally.
How do you do it? I’m sending out resumes, and I have a degree in English l. I would love to be a copywriter. Am I misinformed? How can I make real Pay the bills I have a career money right out of the gate? I actually want to be a real Skilled copywriter. And I’m so scared of being homeless when my lease is up in March.

Aloha Alex, and thank you for your work. Your videos are great, the pacing, look, content, and feel come together nicely! I get a Marie Forleo vibe. I've spent 15 years working in the motion picture industry. I've also been fortunate in having done some freelance work with Vishen and his team here in the states. Being surrounded by such bright people is truly inspiring. Again, thank you for your content as I'm transitioning to writing full time and you've taught me a few things in a short time. 02:01 🎯 Copywriting is aimed at creating sales, while content writing focuses on engagement and interaction. 03:00 🌐 Copywriting is one-directional, strategically leading the reader towards a specific call to action (e.g., buy or opt-in). Content writing is multi-directional, resembling a conversation with tangents and various calls to action. 03:29 💼 Copywriting aims to increase conversion rates and revenue by presenting an offer. Content writing seeks to foster engagement, build brand loyalty, and increase likes, shares, and comments. 01:04 📚 Informal writing can be highly effective in copywriting, and simplicity and engagement often outperform overly formal, complex writing. 04:25 💡 Specialization in either content writing or copywriting can lead to a successful career, and both are essential for a well-rounded marketing strategy.
