Best rendering I've heard in decades.. those Basses bowing down the neck are stupendous.. the entire orchestra is the living end. Flute, Oboe's, Clarinets...all bliss.
I wonder if an expression of gratitude for just being alive has ever surpassed the last section of Ravel’s Ma Mere L’oye, Apothéose : Le Jardin féerique.
Einfach wundervoll!
I wouldn't deny that George Benjamin has some natural musicality, and in spite of the fact that I don't care for his music, I can recognize his abilities as a composer. But this barely qualifies as conducting. In a way it's fascinating to watch someone who's such a non-conductor stand at the helm of a great orchestra and do... what exactly? You could see it as a great injustice that he's given an opportunity that hundreds if not thousands of properly-trained conductors would kill for. Or you can just roll with it. The world's a crazy place!
@MLNG : it is not an absurd take at all. And indeed the conducting world is full of such barely acceptable or straight inacceptable careers, string pulling etc.. See, unlike instrumental soloists, nobody can hear if you are mediocre, especially if you have a good orchestra at your disposal. Is it the case here with G.Benjamin? I can only say that it neither looks amazing nor inadequate, but then again there is truly a lot more to conducting an orchestra than having conducting technique (or doing a show of it!!..). One would need to ask the musicians themselves how the week was! I suspect however that the Radio France orchestra barely needs a conductor at all in this repertoire ;-) Then again it is also a quality of a good conductor to actually just "not disturb" an orchestra which knows what it is doing..
And the 1st violinist is a f*cking great musician. Perfect technique. Pure tone. Wonderful expression. Fantastic.

Ravel's orchestration incorporates every part of the orchestra so equally. Beautiful music making. Thank you for the wonderful performance!

Is that Nicholas Baldeyrou?
