I am a Civil Engineer post graduate from IIT Madras. Got placed THE biggest infra company in the country (named after two Danish Engineers). Worked in this company on two iconic "Atal" bridge projects. I was rated Outstanding Performer in all my appraisals. I resigned after 3 years and completely changed my field. It took me 6 years of UG+PG and 3 years of core industry experience to realize that Civil engineering is the worst engineering related occupation in terms of salaries, professional growth and work ethics. And the worst part of this industry is the unofficial mandate of working 12 hours shifts 6 days a week. Still no project has ever been delivered on time or within budget.

Sir drove down from Jaipur to Jodhpur today. Used to take 5 hrs earlier but today it took me more than nine and a half hours. Aaj literally band baj gayi. Today I started at 1115 hrs. Was stuck in traffic jams on highway and around 1330 hrs I had only reached the outskirts of Jaipur(took me 2 hrs to cross 15kms). It started raining last night which added to the misery. So many diversions because of construction of flyovers. Why can't they construct just one or two flyovers and start the new ones after completing the first one? Driving used to be my hobby. Got a bad headache today instead. Trains are dirty, airport too expensive. Public transport like bus are worse. Solution chahiye. Travel karna to nahi chod sakti. 😢
The issue is selection process of the contractor, aka - L1 Bidding System. We have so many advances in technology in the construction sector such as BIM, COBie software solutions. But these companies cannot implement them because of L1 bidding.

Guruji I would like to rectify you on L-1 bidder since I am working in a PSU. L1 bidder doesn’t necessarily mean low quality bidder. In a Two Bid Tender 1st Technical Competence of the Bidders are gauged then price bids are opened and lowest takes the contract. What I could figure out after working for a good amount of time in PSU that the processes are complex plus corruption plus favouritism to bidders and non transparent process and payment issues makes the L1 genuine bidder to do low quality stuff.
I am a civil engineer, not from IIT or NIT but a state government engineering college. And let me tell you the real problems in this industry. In private sector the starting salaries are from 15000 - 20000 for maximum people except from IIT and NIT. No fix work timings. Basically an unorganised sector. Not most of us want to work in such conditions for such less wages. That's why I have switched to finance now and most of civil engineers don't want to be in this profession anymore. It is not that we don't want to go outside in sun but we want fair compensation for that which is not available in India. That's why most people are either switching to other fields and some going to foreign countries. Government sector used to be the hope for us but everyone knows the corruption in engineering recruitments in states. People with money and power are mostly in those positions. Also nowadays everything is outsourced so there are no quality engineers left in system. People like me have little hope left for our field. Don't take me the wrong way I love my field but it is not monetary feasible to be in this field. People with connections and money are only people flourishing in this field.
I think for every issue Mr Sangwan raises, we should have the solutions coming from experts and experienced people watching the content in the comments. For example L1 bidding system, the biggest problem is every bidder would accept all conditions but there is no way to ensure that things are executed as per contractal conditions.
Can we have a rating system for all contractors, professionals and companies which is available in public domain. Our coding experts can create a rating system which would result in the future contracts more likely to be awarded to better rated contractors, professionals and companies. This would be better than having a system where bids are accepted or rejected just based on some documents. The ratings would be real based on actual delivered projects and this should be real-time where rating would reduce if shortcomings are noticed even during the future use of the infrastructure.
And the payment for the contractors should be upwards revised as his ratings get improved. Hence a better rated company could get the contract even at a higher cost because it has to pay better to its employees to provide better services.

I am a final year civil engineering student at BITS Pilani. There is no scope or quality of life in Civil fields, you have to deal with idiots and useless people, the pay is just a joke, I'm earning 45000 per month as a 20 year old intern in a fintech company, I advice everyone to just take whatever degree and do coding, design, data analytics or product management. These fields pay much netter, have work life balance and a dignity of life. Also please consider leaving this country and move somewhere good so you can have a respectable life😊

I think for every issue Mr Sangwan raises, we should have the solutions coming from experts and experienced people watching the content in the comments. For example L1 bidding system, the biggest problem is every bidder would accept all conditions but there is no way to ensure that things are executed as per contractal conditions.
Can we have a rating system for all contractors, professionals and companies which is available in public domain. Our coding experts can create a rating system which would result in the future contracts more likely to be awarded to better rated contractors, professionals and companies. This would be better than having a system where bids are accepted or rejected just based on some documents. The ratings would be real based on actual delivered projects and this should be real-time where rating would reduce if shortcomings are noticed even during the future use of the infrastructure.
And the payment for the contractors should be upwards revised as his ratings get improved. Hence a better rated company could get the contract even at a higher cost because it has to pay better to its employees to provide better services.

Guruji, the biggest culprit in India is the "service industry". No one wants to do the hard job (civil, mechanical, electrical, etc which should pay better), but everybody wants to earn dividend of $ conversion and sit in the AC office!

I am a final year civil engineering student at BITS Pilani. There is no scope or quality of life in Civil fields, you have to deal with idiots and useless people, the pay is just a joke, I'm earning 45000 per month as a 20 year old intern in a fintech company, I advice everyone to just take whatever degree and do coding, design, data analytics or product management. These fields pay much netter, have work life balance and a dignity of life. Also please consider leaving this country and move somewhere good so you can have a respectable life😊
