  • Indonesia is at the heart of global geopolitical competition, being Southeast Asia's largest economy and most populous state. Their rapid development is putting them on track to hold the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific, yet the United States has focused very little on improving bilateral relations, increasing trade, or expanding military ties. Ireland, with its 5 million people, trades more with the US than Indonesia, with its 270 million.
We analyse the challenges Indonesia must overcome to fulfil its potential, and the importance it holds for the region and wider geopolitical interests in the Indo-Pacific.

My Germany buddy, as a telecom consultant said that Indonesia is very challenging, is not easy doing build the telecom, electrical, road, etc infrastructure in Indonesia. Not like India, Brazil or South Africa as the subcontinent country, Indonesia has 17.000 more islands, and 6.000 more are habitant. It's not easy connecting whole of islands, nature challange, earth quake, eruption, roughest sea, volcanic mountains, with thousand ethnic and local languages. with a million complex problems. Big country with big problems. How Indonesia become in one nation. He was still amaze.

On my notes, Indonesia once out from UN in 1964 that's bold and brave moves for new country. But, yeah agreed this country is a global trading crossroad. PKI also didn't want to get wiped out of the politics after Soekarno's era, that was also one of the reason why they launched a coup against Soekarno's government. they wanted to take control asap before his era ended. as for why he retired, he was kinda forced to. the people kinda felt betrayed by PKI actions back then. as Soekarno also had some friendship with PKI, they began to think that they had to replace him with a more-pro-Pancasila president. tho in fact, it was actually the provisional People's Consultative Assembly who revoked his position as the president.
as for Soeharto, i also have some suspicions towards him too. like just how did he get into power even tho he got a "mandate" from Soekarno himsel? he didn't even give an answer till death. so that was really suspicious.

China will be foolish if they ever antagonized or even attack Indonesia knowing really well that Indonesia is emphasing neutrality policy which is rarity for a country as big as them, in the same time Indonesia is acting like "shield" protecting Australia from China's hard invasion coz the Chinese are gonna need to occupy the archipelago first before mounting the attack on Australia's soil.

I surprised you talked about Indonesia geopolitics without telling about non-alignment. Every time you ask an Indonesian which side Indonesian government is, they will almost always say non-alignment. Indonesia was even the one that create non-alignment movement during cold war through Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung (which probably piss America a lot because some of the country joining is strategically important and also a lot of countries that joined were kinda communist, even Indonesia itself). Every school thought that Indonesia foreign policy is free (non-alignment) and active (at mantaining peace). China is the largest Indonesia trade partner, but Indonesia also increase trade partner with US to counter-balance. Indonesian jet fighter come from Russia, US, and France. "the benefits of non-alignment is if the US blocks their arms trade, just buy from Soviet " - my legendary history teacher.
Example of recent non-alignment action, Australia is Indonesia's friend but when they joined AUKUS and talked about nuclear sub, Indonesia opposed, Indonesia opposed and responded by buying ship, submarine, and jet fighter from France (which also oppose AUKUS) because the government anticipate arms race in Southeast Asia. This was ironically restrain China control in South China Sea even more which was probably what Australia wants (of course Australia control was also restricted although I haven't heard news about that).
If you want to now the people's view, well, it's very random. The people don't like France, don't like US, like US, don't like Malaysia, love Australia (a lot), no opinion on China, no opinion on East Timor, like Bangladesh, love Saudi Arabia, like Turkey, hate Israel a lot, love Palestine. Keep in mind, this is just my lazy observation. The people's opinion varies a lot and can changes so much, you could almost say they hates all countries and overpo... actually you know what, I'm too lazy to write the rest, like a lot of this probably wrong already. Indonesia had always been that slippery land that people sometimes avoid to talk about. That one point in history Indonesia was slightly tilted to the eastern block with its friendship with USSR, the local Communist Party staged a rebel that would later on recalled as a national tragedy which turned Indonesia's neutrality towards Communism into extreme hatred, now why would that happen so suddenly and at a critical stage of Cold War too, hm? Afterwards, a new president was installed and the new president for some reason leaned heavily to western block. When all of that had ended, none dared to have an open talk with Indonesia again. Russia kept the warm friendship but didn't overtly display affection like in the past with USSR and USA also maintained a pretty much indifferent and subtle approach. Why is this? It's not because the natural resource has run out, nope. In fact, it didn't really change much from the past, but no one dared to be as close as they used to be in the past.
Why? IMO, they're keeping the lukewarm status quo to keep in check the other side. They also mostly kept Indonesia out of the heavy talk because the least they need is more attention to Indonesia. Indonesia is like the forbidden land that everyone wanted but dared not to touch because it will, IT WILL, alarm your enemies who will do everything they could to destroy any budding affection you carved with it.

The communist wanted to subvert the nation from the inside (madiun 1948), while the US literally funded, trained, and armed rebels in our territory (Permesta 1957).
Indonesia is a wildcard, a card you want to be in your hand when you're running out of options, not a card you want your opponent knows it's on your hand
The moment that card is revealed, the opponent would do anything they can to destroy its value.
That is why for Indonesia non-alignment is not a matter of political stance in the global stage, but it is also a matter of our survival.
We do not choose to be non-aligned, it is the only way we could continue to exists.

Creating a single identity was crucial. And a single identity was created indeed. First by having the same enemy, the Dutch. For example, in early and late 19th century respectively, we had Cut Nyak Dhien in Aceh, and Pattimura in Maluku. Both were seperated so far away, almost 4000 km, with different cultures, different religions, different languages, but they were fighting the same enemy. That created a bond, and eventually an identity.
This was then strengthened by Sumpah Pemuda in 1928, which included Bahasa Indonesia as a language that unites all. Using a relatively new language as the national language, instead of choosing one of the local languages was also very important to the country's survival. This single identity, "Indonesia", has been engraved in our mind and heart our whole lives. That's what keeping this country as one nation, even though it seems impossible.

Yea we used to be divided into tribes and kingdoms before, until the white Europeans came and managed to unite the entire archipelago by being European.
Since then our founding fathers kinda indoctrinate many tribes into supporting the independence movement and managed to do exactly that, creating an identity as a nation based on unity and further indoctrinate the people into believing that they are part of Republic of Indonesia (and it works).
Our founding fathers managed to fool everyone, the Malays, Sundanese, Javanese, Papuans. Into becoming part of Indonesia without any cultural or historical basis at all, they all simply becoming Indonesians because apparently the founding fathers say so and he also say that colonization and imperialism is bad, which is something everyone agreed on.
So how did the Indonesian regime continued to survive and even developing despite the odds?

Interesting comments and accounts to be read here. Indonesia tries very much to become a world balancing power, through various leaders and governments it has not without its challenges as monetary, social, and cultural developments especially since the latter half of the 20th century has been so rapid. As the initiator of the Non-Alligned Movement during the Asia-Africa Conference in 1955 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia’s foreign policy has always been “free and active”. This, Indonesia believes, will keep the balance of world powers in South East Asia. Despite the fact that Singapore and the Philipines have alligned themselves more to the USA, and Malaysia and Brunei also being a member of the British Commonwealth, I believe they are not puppet countries of the West. Indonesia and ASEAN must be neutral to maintain peace in South East Asia and not become entangled the politics of the US, China, Taiwan etc.

I think the issue with America in Southeast Asia goes beyond only Indonesia. There should be very heavy work being done both diplomatically and economically with all of ASEAN and, in particular, the 5 tiger cub economies and Singapore. Even if it’s just to guarantee neutrality which Southeast Asia tends to favour anyways. Being between India, China, and America has incredible economic potential that Singapore took full advantage of. Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines are probably the most important countries on the planet to gain the favour of going forward. America hasn’t seemed to fully grasp how important this is yet. Luckily, Japan and Australia have with both pouring tons of FDI into the 5 and Australia cooperating a lot with Indonesia in counter insurgency operations training.

Cold War make Indonesia as Domino for western and eastern bloc. If USSR can still make Ir. Soekarno believe at them, that was a victory for eastern bloc in SEA region, but the reality is western bloc succesfully erased Ir. Soekarno from Indonesia's politic with an coup d'etat by the Military with the justified to purge the communist party and they supporter. But, in the end the military also killed some intellectual person (like university college students) also many Soekarnoism or Soekarno is supporter.
But why Soekarno must be removed from Indonesia's politic? Because Soekarno main projects is make Indonesia to independence from all means, like in foreign policy the president want to Free and Active policy that make Indonesia can 'befriend' all country and all nation.
Another reason is, Soekarno was a socialist and want to make NASAKOM (Nasionalism, Religious, Communist) he want to make like United Front for 3 parties, PNI or Indonesian Nasionalist Party, all Religious parties, and the Indonesian Communist Party or PKI.
Some faction seen this as threat for them, one of those is the Military faction from I like say old guard who are trained under the colonial.
In the end, CIA and the Military successfully removed Soekarno from Indonesia's politic and make a new regime under military restrictions for 32 years and fall in 1998.
And now, Indonesia is under the Oligarchy is control. Just look at the cabinet and how many oligrachs are on the Senate and National Assembly.

Unlike Europe in the past. Indonesia as a power would like to stay away from the blue or red. The nation would like to be an intermediary nation, because it bodes well with them geopolitcaly.
The nation is currently on the way of achieving such goal, slowly stabilizing it's territory and developing their eastern region. And in current time, should an outside power try to disturb via planned 'subterfuge', it will possibly tilt the country's alignment dramatically.
Country's relationship toward any outside power is simple; be nice and they will be nice in return, be hostile and they will retaliate.

Our bebas-aktif/free-active policy doesn't mean we wouldn't choose a side, but we choose what side benefits/align with our policy and needs. At the moment, the trade situation is balanced but the armed force is definitely leaning toward the west.

What weird about Indonesia is that for some reasons they are very close to Russia. Even if the government didn't act like that, but there are plenty of Indonesians out there that actually support Russia on this war.

Ingat !
