We Japanese learn 2136 kanji until that time.

I've researched how many characters you gotta remember to pass each levels, 2000 is almost N1 level. At least, writing and reading questions.

nah this is fine these are completely different skills.
My vocab is ~30k and that's including about 2700 unique kanji but speaking well is as much about vibe and pronunciation as it is about grammar...if you don't have an environment that demands output (and gives feedback...), it's not going to happen for a lot of people.
If she has the energy a bilingual collab with someone like Irys could help a ton.
Speaking broken accent heavy japanese where you can't express yourself is purely about confidence not ability and some people are too self conscious for this.

Hell fucking no, she has definitely studied. It's just that once you begin learning a language you realize how much you do not know. I know about 5k Japanese words and even now I'm like "damn, I'm absolute shit at Japanese"
The whole "man I only know about (insert a great value)% of the language, I'm terrible" is extremely common for any language learner.

There are 2,136 kanji in the jouyou kanji (regular use kanji), so she's practically just shy of being considered literate, but somehow isn't confident in speaking and grammar. No idea how that happens, lol.

So she's probably of Korean or Chinese ancestry.I speak mandarain so Kanji's easy for me even though their meaning is often different in Jp but it's easy to make the new associations since the way it's written is already familiar. Grammar on the other hand is a whole other different animal. The particles and sentence structure is very different.
Yeah. When learning Japanese from zero, it's rare to remember and read 2000, but also be bad at grammar at the same time.
It narrows down the possibilities significantly.
I think she's probably Korean who grow up in US the way she speaks.

2000 kanji is N1 level tho??? Anyone that study japanese that know 2000 kanji should be alr pretty good and is not a beginner, the only reason i can think of is that she's Chinese.
Yep that was my first thought too. Nobody knows 2000 kanji and is considered "beginner" level unless they learned Chinese first.
in terms of reading though I think she doesnt have too much practice for japanese speaking which is why she cant speak well which is what it is for both me and my friend as well

@@TotemoGaijinThere are many cases where people are very good in reading but not as good in speaking or writing, whereas others are better at speaking but not good at reading or writing. I have a similar situation, I can speak Assamese fluently, but it's hard for me to read and even harder to write.

2000 kanji might feel like a massive hurdle but it’s doable in about 3 months of active studying… I know cause I did it and know a bunch of other people who did the same. And I’m incredibly lazy. Definitely feel the same way with feeling illiterate af though even after 4 years of studying with full kanji knowledge
