That ground is for the temp gauge. Since the thermostat housing is isolated from ground by being suspended in air basically by the coolant hoses it needs that ground wire for the sending unit and the gauge to function properly. I found this out the hard way on my 6245.

So it should be back on the housing or actually attached to the frame?
