I’m surprised how good that exhausted sounds! Looks funny sticking out with that massive tip but I guess you can’t complain for the price. Problems with the cheap header will show up once you get it hot on the track and the welds start cracking. Definitely not speaking from personal experience...
For a track only car you will probably be fine with the raceland. I have heard they can have issues with cracking when wrapped in heat shielding. You may want to install some Cool Mat on the driver's footwell area to keep from cooking your accelerator foot, since it's sure to be buried into the carpet the entire time you are on track! Car is looking the part for sure! Uncorking the intake side might get you a couple of HP now that you have done the exhaust, but there isn't too much meat on the bone unless you go to a standalone ECU. My 99 is dyno tuned to 140 whp, and it feels pretty good at that level. BP5A intake cam will add power up top, as well as an EUDM squaretop manifold. But, that may be upgrading beyond your intent with this car. Looking forward to seeing if this can hang with the abondoned STi around the track ;)
Safety first guys, that engine twitch scared me. And good idea on disconnecting both engine mounts, because jacking the engine on the hoist could've accidentally tipped it off the hoist
you will definitely pick up some power...through the whole rev range. that manifold you took off is awful and known to rob power compared to most other NA/NB miatas with a header from the factory.
Love this series, love you guys, keen to see some RUclipsrs out racing around! Definitely would like to see a Big Ben vs Little Ben from Gears and Gasoline
Cappuccino windshield washer Reservoir fits in the cowl. It's a popular upgrade to clean up the engine bay. And I think the biggest concern on those cheap 4-2-1 headers is where the mergers are. The welds crack & the inside isn't clean.
Some people get a CEL from blocking the EGR, some don't. Interested to see how the Raceland header holds up. Lots of reports of the welds breaking under track use. Hard to beat that price, though!
I have that exhaust on my NB and overall love it. One thing to note is that over time the baffling in the resonator came loose and made a horrible rattling, so I welded a straight pipe in its place. Also expect the raceland header to contact the transmission tunnel under load. I eventually gave up and put a racing beat header in its place. Surprised it’s not that loud cause mine is ear bleeding under load!
Might want to look at getting Mazda Competition Engine mounts, as the stock mounts flex way too much. When cornering hard and needing to shift to third, the engine will shift to the point where the shift forks won’t line up and it will NOT go into gear at least 50% of the time. ASR makes some really nice mounts that are more streetable if you get the lower durometer ones, but the Mazda completion mounts are more of a budget option
my favorite miata exhaust. exact system im running on mine. the stock manifold heatshield was making all sorts of noise so im ashamed to say I went with the raceland header as well and it has really held up (longer than my racing beat I had on my old 1.6)
Here is your egr fix: " keep the EGR valve electrical connection connected, but block off the ports and switch the vacuum connection feeding the boost sensor from the middle of the intake manifold to the vacuum nipple just behind the throttle body." SN
Literally my exact exhaust header combo. Header slides in without lifting motor if you unbolt the 4 bolts holding in the steering rack and slide it to the right.

Yeaaaah. My raceland header was a pain to install too. I just undid the driver side mount. Removing the rocker will also give a bit more wiggle room. Cover your hoses and wires near it or you'll burn through them.
the EGR usually comes into play when cruising a long time and in close loop. that's when a check engine light will come on. that exhaust does sound good tho
I have a raceland header on my 1999 NB and had the same problems installing. But got it in and it looked great. Got a good deal on it since it was a second hand one too. It really made a big difference on the car torque wise and I believe a bit on the top end. It's definitley feels and sounds so much better with a full exhaust as well. I have a 2.5 catback on mine with the factory cat still on. You will get an EGR cel code for for the egr being blocked but you may get lucky and have the light come and go. mine has come and gone a few times. its pretty weird.
I did a write up on the header install. All you had to do was loose the motor mounts, use a Cherry picker to lift the motor up, and the header would slide right in! But what do i know? .....
I figured that stock exhaust wasn't going to last from the time I saw the "fix" on it before. I wasn't expecting anything quite so aggressive looking, though. It sounds quite a bit like my Fit, but a little louder.
Most exhaust bolts get seized from the heat and rust. Those broken bolts can be easily drilled out and tapped if they were studs or fully drilled and put nuts and bolts on the flange.
One thing I’d like to know more about is the 5cyl vortec, what one sounds like with a good exhaust, and a turbo, if anyone has fitted one in place of another swap. So if anyone is looking for a unique swap all the bits to do an ls swap should fit.
Hey got a quick question. I’m 15 I live in Ontario and I was looking at the isr exhaust. I’m wondering if that would be legal for a street car?!? Can Anyone in Ontario fill me in please and thanks.
@speedacademy finding how good the quality of these race land headers are by putting a ton of weight on them......... Check. No one dies seal of approval.
Looks great guys. Stock header is extremely restrictive, more to on California cars, but either way, it will feel a lot more peppy with the header. Note, the strut car doesn’t do anything on Miatas, it’s just extra weight. Look at all the national championship winning Miatas, none have strut bars.
Not a full cage. It’s a four point roll bar. Full cage to me is side protection and a minimum of 6 points built to a reputable sanctioning body’s regulations for safety I.e. tube thickness per vehicle weight, number of attachment points, with proven design and engineering, etc.
Hi! I love the exhausts design and sound and want to get it for my NB. But here in Germany the law is very strict. Do you know how loud (in decibel) the exhaust is approximately? With cat and the included muffler. Would be fantastic to know. ISR couldn´t give me any information.
You wont find that information anywhere, no one tests db here so sadly we do t have a good answer but it is a loud system. You could always add another muffler if its too loud.
Yes you will get a CEL from deleting the EGR. I am not currently aware of a cheap solution to trick the ECU either. Most guys just leave their EGR in tact until it's time to switch to a standalone ECU like a Megasquirt. That EGR should have bolted right up, so I'm not entirely sure why you guys deleted it lol Great livery and great number. RIP Nicky Hayden, #69 -Colorado Miata Guy
It will smooth out the lower end. Try y set ups will feel like power at the least. The 4-1 felt like more power at 4000 rmp. Stock jdm and eudm try y set ups have been dyno proven for the lower rpm so... Yeah. 3-5 hp somewhere but definitely quicker in the lower rpm tho.
