Had to do similar thing but no need for the power extender kit (PEK). My 70’s heater only had two wires connected to the thermostat but luckily the cable had 4 wires in it. Yellow and blue were unused. Red was “hot” and white went to the switch to turn the heat on so I ran blue to common (-) on the transformer, so blue became my C wire and I was good to go.
Is the Ecobee supposed to be able to get power from a 3-wire furnace, (R-G-W) WITHOUT using the PEK? I read within their online instructions, that with this kind of scenario, the option is to move the G wire to C on both the Ecobee and the furnace side. I just got an Ecobee and tried it that way ---and NOTHING happened. Any idea what went wrong?? (as an aside - you referenced in the video to turn the BREAKER back on BEFORE attaching the Ecobee to the wall. i did that in reverse --- could that have been the problem?)

How do i know if I have the proper wires ? I have a complete new system install ( complete hvac system )in 2019. Is it likely thah I have all the wires ?
New System usually equals a new system board in the furnace which should have all the slots you need. If it's a forced-air furnace, turn off A/C breaker or switch, open the door to your furnace, identify your terminal with label YWRGC and follow it as best you can, if you are have a fox and hound also known as a tone generator and receiver put some tone on one of the cables and trace your cable either visually or by chasing the tone. It should go up into some conduit or be exposed out of the furnace up into the wall. What you need to make sure is, that there isn't something in the middle. Any type of information relay converting 2 or 4 wire to 5 or 6 wire in lament terms. If none was found go up to your thermostat remove the thermostat. You should have the same amount of wires usually in the same color config from the furnace board to the thermostat terminal points YWRGC. If so you should be good. If you have a boiler or other type of system do your research before using this type of thermostat to ensure compatibility.
Per the Ecobee Manual: "If you have a jumper between Rc, Rh, or R, leave it alone. Only label the wires that run from your wall into a terminal block." When you remove your old mounting place the jumper stays there and remains removed. Install the new Ecobee, you do not make a new jumper and between R, Rh or R , Install wires to the Ecobee terminal block as labeled for example Rc G Y/Y1 W/W1 C no jumper is placed.
I have 3 wires for heating coming from the thermostat R, W and G plus 2 wires for cooling connected at the furnace like this: W, R, G for heating no Y connected G and C for cooling. Ecobee Thermostats need to use Thread. Ecobee stats have to connect to your WiFi and Ecobee.com to function. The Thermostats frequently disconnect from Ecobee.com and are now longer reached from HomeKit or Ecobee App. Totally worthless, especially if installed in remote location. You must reset your Router to get back online. Need way to use the Thermostats w/o Ecobee.com connection.
Not sure I understand. I installed this ecobee and have had 0 problems. It is at a remote location. I do have a great internet set up there though. In my video 11 things to know before buying a smart thermostat I explain that an excellent internet connection is needed on any of these thermostats. @@edtheoldtechguy Glad for you. My 1st 4 Ecobee’s worked great. The Ecobee3 Lites do not. I’m not alone, tons of complaints on the internet. Apparently Ecobee.com kicks certain routers off periodically i guess. But, the Thermostats should reconnect like my 3’s do. If i reset router they reconnect and stay connected for 30 mins or 2 days. But always disconnect and fail to reconnect on their own. When you check them, they are still connected to WiFi but NOT ecobee.com servers. Like i said, its a flaw that must be connected to Ecobee.com to function.
@@JohnWilliams-vr8fp Ah I understand now, Gosh I have to say it hasn't happen to me. When it does I will make a video. About it. Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of the issue. Ecobee should get that fixed. Seems like a pretty basic software fix on their end.
@@edtheoldtechguy the 1st four were great products. Easy to install and worked great. If you buy one, save box, everything including the receipt. If have connection problems return it. They just won’t work with some routers and WiFi. Thanks.
Ecobee is better than Nest
Thanks for the comment!
