- I found this old timber a while back and thought I’d make something with it. It is extremely dense, hard and heavy. Any ideas what species it might be? Thanks for watching!

It looks like Hemlock to me. I owned a house that was built circa 1848, the hand- hewn hemlock floor joists looked just like this wood.
I’m gonna suggest red oak. That’s my initial thought.
I think maybe red oak, best I can guess!
SAME
1970 fiberglass boats were shipped here in “ironwood” frame/crates. that badly checked beam matches closely. some is light some is dark , like ebony. And the multiple holes look like further evidence it was part of a huge crate.
That’s really interesting, never mines that. Thanks!
You are welcome . I lived in a boat town when the boats were arriving. All the old timers wanted that “scrap wood” lol@@EveryDayGuyStuff
Im going chestnut. I have kitchen cabinets made out of it, was ver old reclaimed wood. Looks just like it, except mine has more worm holes.
What does the end grain look like? Even pine with super close growth rings can be amazingly heavy. Could be as a lot of others said, chestnut, hemlock, oak, etc.
I’m going to cut the ragged ends off so we can see. Thanks for watching Joseph!
My initial guess was chestnut but i haven't seen any in decades. The color is right but the c-nut I remember didn't have this tight a grain. Very long way to say "beats me". 🤔
Yeah, like he said. Smell it. Looks like old pine studs in my house. They have close grain like that but definitely smell of pine when cut. If it smells like shit, it's probably hickory. Considering nails were successfully removed, knowing nothing else, I would guess something softer than hickory or oak.
looks like red oak. But does it smell like oak? if it is quarter sawn, it should have Medullary rays.
I can’t see the wood clearly, but ,Years ago I got a piece of ship decking . Heavy as metal.
Turned out to be a type of mahogany.
It was beautiful when I cut into it, but without finish it greyed out eventually.
Maybe?
I will post another video with better close ups when I figure out what to do with it. Thanks for watching!
For the size it is extremely heavy. Thanks for watching!
You're guessing right. It's oak.
Chestnut
Looks like white oak
oak
Looks like red oak to me.
That was my initial thought when I first saw the cut. Thanks for watching!
