Every year, the Stanley Cup Playoffs seem to thrust a new unlikely hero into the spotlight. Though many of these surprising stars are unable to match their heroics in the years that follow, most of them are able to secure a place on an NHL roster for several years after their career-defining performance. However, one player would find himself on the other side of the world just 2 years after his championship-clinching heroics.
This is the story of Devante Smith-Pelly: from Stanley Cup to China!

Devante Smith-Pelly's goal in game six against Tampa is my personal favorite goal I've ever seen in hockey. He'll always be special to us, wherever he goes.

Very recently with Ontario, he was part of history, as himself, Quinton Byfield, and Akil Thomas became the first all-black line since the 40s, when Ossie Carnegie, Herb Carnegie, and Manny McIntyre skated with the Sherbrooke Saints of the Quebec Senior Hockey League.

Got 3 NHL contracts. Made a few million, got the Cup. All before 28 years old. Not bad. Yeah he’s no star but he’s got heart and can do something else and everything will be just fine.

Loved this dude, he was one of my favorite power forward players. He was key during that caps stanley cup run. Hes in AHL now but i cant believe no NHL team would want a player like that

As a Caps fan who saw DSP play some hard-nosed and effective hockey in the Caps Cup run I really believe he deserves a shot at a Seattle roster spot, if even a depth/taxi squad guy. He is a tuff dude and if he could lower the turnovers and let the game come to him a bit more while still playing heavy and energetically he could still be useful on an NHL checking line role. Thx 4 the vid.

Like with many other players, Coach Barry Trotz had a way with him (someone called Trotz the "Devante whisperer"). Trotz helped DSP become a better 2-way player, and he delivered big in the postseason 2018. He will always be a DC legend even if only for one season.

2 seasons actually. He played the 2018-2019 szn w the caps too but yes the 2018 playoffs and 17-18 season is what he'll mostly be remembered for @@glennhavinoviski8128

Hated that the Ducks traded him in 2015. Seeing what he did for the Caps in 2018, I firmly believe Anaheim would've beaten Chicago in the WCF had they kept Smith-Pelly. One of Bob Murray's many mistakes.

Fun fact, he was involved in a lot of drug activity while with the Habs, along with Alex Galchenyuk, Nathan Beaulieu and Christian Thomas. Thomas got traded because of it, and all of them aren’t with the Habs anymore

Man Ville Leino was absolutely unstoppable in the playoffs that year he scored over a pt a game. I remember Detroit saying he was one the best players they ever had to pass on. Great for Philly, wish it had been as great in Buffalo for him.

Expanding the game, there are a billion potential hockey fans. The NHL is a doing a shit job in promoting the game globally, so it’s an opportunity for the KHL. Also, it’s not a bad idea, given the KHL has teams in Russia’s East, those teams are closer to Beijing than they are Moscow.
