Dr. Suess was a true genius. He was able to distill the complex social issue of class warfare and discrimination into a form that kids could understand. It's 40 years later, and adults are still viewing and discussing it.

This story only gets better as you get older. When I was a kid I thought it was a simple racism is bad story that didn't have much to offer. But now that I'm older I notice new things. Like McBean being an example of corporations profiting off of bigotry by telling each side exactly what they want to hear just to con them out of their money with something that doesn't really do anything for them at all. Companies in real life do it all the time, probably more today than ever before.

Something I noticed is how the "lesser class" non-star bellies were given a much cheaper price for the machine and their dialogue in general is written to be edgier/simpler (2:37, 5:24) - more colloquial (6:12-6:16) - alluding to the fact that they are, perhaps, not getting the same opportunities in comparison to the pompous star bellies who have a typical upper-class attitude and use larger pretentious words (8:37). This displays not only the star bellies' over-inflated egos, but also their seemingly advanced education which the non-stars were denied. We also see that the star-bellies have a full on organized community and their own sort of governing body. The non-stars, of course, noticeably exempt from the town hall meeting, which shows even further the disadvantages of the non-stars, and their lack of a voice among the community.
Its the details like this that make this cartoon so thought provoking and impactful, because nothing - not even the dialogue - is without purpose. I wish there could be more kids cartoons like this that challenged big ideas without flashing everything in your face, or being bogged down with goofy cringe :/
Edit: I also wanted to point out how Disn - I mean McBean targeted the non-star bellies first and exploited their situation to make a profit, all without ever actually caring about their struggles. I shouldn't have to explain how powerfully dangerous and real this is, especially when you see how eager these big corporations are to "promote" minorities and underrepresented groups when it suits them...

The real problem is that this cartoon short doesn't do a very good job of going into the details that make racist/classist discrimination so entrenched in human culture.
The bonfire parties that the star-bellied Sneetches held were apparently built from scratch by the star-bellied Sneetches; they got the stones and the wood for the fire-pits, and bought their own frankfurters. It was very unlikely that the plain-bellied Sneetches actually helped make any of it, and there's nothing which suggests that they couldn't have started their own parties.
Now, regarding racial discrimination on Birmingham public transportation. The people that rode the buses (white and black) didn't have a hand in making them; they were provided by a government-funded department of transportation. And furthermore, that department was funded by the tax money of both whites and blacks. So not only were white people provided a service that they only indirectly supported, but black people provided that same indirect support and were still treated worse.

Well, yes, but that's literally like the top millimeter of the meaning. The Jews in Nazi Germany were marked with stars as a negative mark, while the powerful wore the swastika "star" as a positive mark. After the war, obviously all the power shifted. Seuss was commenting on how easily symbols can be used to mark whole classes of people as either master or slave, and how people instinctively over-value symbols instead of pursuing real freedom.

I love how ironic is the way how things that for us people that are older and are supposed to know better are the ones that need to stop making stupid excuses and passed that to others so they pass them to another one. Dr. Seuss was a real genius that not only taught and still teaches kids much younger than us about how everyone in this world excludes other ones or do stupid things without a racional reason, he also taught the older ones about it so they could see things for what they really are. You were a wise Pearson dr. Seuss, and speaking for myself and others I know you will always be remembered.
