The Princess Marguerite was the end of the steamship era. It was saved temporarily by the Provincial Government when the CPR had retired the ship. A small team of us worked to keep it operational with a new livery and style. During its revival the Maggie was very successful as day tripper Seattle to Victoria.
We took a family trip to Victoria in fall of '88 when I was 7 years old. We came in on the Victoria Clipper, which I thought was pretty cool, but as we came into Victoria harbor I remember catching sight of the Princess Marguerite and just being in awe of how beautiful she looked. To my 7-year-old self she looked like a full-fledged transatlantic ocean liner! Those funnels in particular grabbed my attention and stand out in my memory... Thanks for uploading this!
I remember the Princess Marguerite from the early 80s when my family lived in James Bay near Camel point at the end of Simcoe st. used to play in the coast guards yard that was not fenced off very well back then.
My late father served on all of the Princess line steamships, the last one being the Princess Kathleen which sank off the coat of Juneau, Alaska Sept 7, 1952
I used to take her home for holidays sometimes as a teenager in the years before this was filmed. Always happy to be unsupervised and moving away from school. Fond memories. I guess Clipper put her out of business? Faster but no cars.
Thank you for sharing your video. Wonderful tribute to the Maggie! We were on the committee “Save the Maggie”, but sadly as you are aware, she was scrapped in Singapore. We enjoy your video more each time we watch it. It is the best we have seen of the Maggie.
@@peterommundsen7395 you're welcome. You were smart to get these uploaded. I had some great stuff that got lost. I do have still pics I will try to get posted on the wcf Westcoast Ferries board. Loved the Maggie. My dad loved it and made sure I got to see it at noon during the summer when we visited. I cried the day it showed it being towed out of the Victoria area. Did you ever get VIP coming into Ogden?
@@markjones1184 Thank you, never got VIP at Ogden, but recall seeing her doing very slow evening cruises after dark into the inner harbour and turning around near the Coho berth.
@@peterommundsen7395 interesting. I remember the year after Maggie was retired, VIP tied up in May at Maggie's dock, facing the opposite way to way Maggie faced
The ship berthed just northwest of the Coho terminal, that is just behind the Coho. You can see cars at the Coho berth in front of the Princess Marguerite at 3:40 on the slider.
@@peterommundsen7395 is north east correct? Did she not berth on the south side of the inner harbour? If she was berthed behind the Coho berth would that not be west?
I know it sounds stupid, crazy and ridiculously expensive. But what if someone came up with the money to build an operational steam powered replica of the Princess Marguerite II? Just a stupid thought
Likely they exist in some collection as they would be far more valuable than scrap metal. An identical whistle from the sister ship Princess Patricia was conserved about 1986, as was a whistle from the Canadian National Steamship Prince George.

Its such a crying shame that she wasn't saved.
Mr Glover, Thank you and the team for having been apart of Maggie history.
Did you know Glenn Lee? As I remember, he too was involved in a preservation effort. Thanks for the information, and for keeping Maggie afloat!
@@kurtarmbruster Yes I do remember Glenn.
They should have made her a hotel restaurant in the hourbour.

Thank you for your comment, yes, steam age ships and locomotives were magnets for kids and had life-long impacts through memories and interests.

Love this. Like time travel to 88 or 89
This docked at the current Coho terminal, right? I have very vague memories of the Princess Marguerite as a kid 😅

wonder what happened to her whistle, telegraph etc. All scrapped in India with the ship?

Three blasts on the whistle= "I am operating astern propulsion, watch out behind me."
