Criminal, with charges usually brought by a DA's office or DOJ prosecutor, or State AG or the like. Private individuals can't "prosecute" Criminal cases. Civil trials are a whole other thing ruled by Tort Law. Private individuals can sue other private individuals, that is the very nature of Tort Law, to right damages one citizen causes to another, which are morally wrong, but not criminal. Educate yourselves somewhere else beyond Alex J. he's let you down.

Gabriel - The lawyers are merely hired hands who are helping the victims (the families of the dead children) who were hurt by the lies that were spewed by Alex Jones. You need to remember that Jones is not a journalist; he is a private citizen/commentator of the news. He chose to malign the parents of the murdered children by saying they had done scandalous things. He lied about the parents and defamed them. Whatever amount of money the court decides Mr. Jones needs to pay to mollify the defamed parents is fine with me, and completely legal. Furthermore, Jones hurt his own case by ignoring legal requests of information from the plaintiffs as delivered by judicial means. All in all, he is guilty of defamation and the current case is just there to determine the cost of the damages.

Had he appeared in court whenever called for testimony, that would also have helped his cases. Generally, if he had cooperated with the court from the beginning he would not have engendered so much antipathy. Among the problems for Mr. Jones is that he never learned how to deal with legal processes and he rarely listened to the advice he received from his own counsel. Mr. Jones fought with his own counsel (and kept changing counsel) through the process. It was a series of rookie errors from a person who is not a rookie. Aside from having hateful ideas about many of his fellow citizens, Mr. Jones behaves like a fool. He acts like a schoolyard bully, but the justice system does not take well to that kind of treatment and fights back in a far more sophisticated and effective way.

Yea but let this sink in. There is video footage of one of the parents literally 'rehearsing lines' on camera to a guy named Matt. It's clear as day. Cannot be confused. No rational, logical, sane, or innocent way to possibly explain it other than him rehearsing lines. It should give you a sick feeling in your gut.
Now think about how it's apparently wrong for you to even talk about that. If you don't think that's outer space insane then something is clearly sadistic in your nature.
He should have known not make a claim against an individual if you can't prove it conclusively. That is what defamation law comes down to. So he was a complete fool to say such outrageous and cruel things about the parents, of the murdered children ( accusing them of being frauds and saying their murdered children were not real) and knowing he could never defend them in a court of law because he had zero proof. So he was always going to lose this case.

Also he defamed specific individuals when called them fakes and crisis actors, and those things are not protected by freedom of speech laws. The parents of the Sandy Hook victims were then targeted by Alex Jones supporters for abuse. You can't tell lies about people that are damaging and expect them to be protected under Freedom of speech laws. Because the laws don't protect you against that type of thing. Alex Jones deserves everything he gets.

If Jones specifically accused someone of doing something they didn't do, that would be grounds for a defamation suit, but simply saying the whole thing was a hoax is not defamation of anyone. People have the right to be wrong.

Alex refused to cooperate with the court system and there was a summary judgment against him. It is common when any party does not engage the courts in good faith.
If he got a jury trial he would've been found gulity and probably owed more a judgment
He wasn't denied a trial he refused to cooperate with the legal system (in this case ignoring requests for discovery). You have a right to a trial but if you don't participate the legal system doesn't just stop. I can't get out of a ticket by refusing to take the piece of paper from the officer or just refusing to show up to court.
