- We are FINALLY renovating our Class A motorhome! This is the first video in a series on our RV makeover. We have a TIGHT budget to make this reno happen. Our RV is a 2004 Fleetwood Discovery 39J. As our kids grow we want to add bunks & give our 17 year RV an updated look & feel ⬇️⬇️ Click Show More ⬇️⬇️
We have ZERO experience with construction or home remodeling. We are learning as we go, watching RUclips videos, using google, talking to the staff at Home Depot, and using critical thinking skills to make this happen.
We will be publishing our costs in a future video - so make sure you are subscribed and have your notifications turned on (ring the bell).

If you want to paint the cabinets I suggest that you first lightly sand them, then use sprayer “cup style” that would prevent brush marks. When reinstalling anything that was screwed in, use wooden toothpicks to partly fill the holes “plus wood glue” then when re-screwing stuff, the screw will get a better bite into the same holes. Good luck with all this work your taking on. Better you then me😁
Great tips, thanks!
I agree. Roof integrity IS the most important part. all that panel stuff is small repairs to me.
we have just purchased our first motorhome, we have had travel trailers, but now moving to a class A. We have found ourselves a 2010 Newmar and will be renovating as well. Your series has been / will continue to be a great help! thank you for posting!
So about your light fixtures you can buy some warm LED bulbs that will still be soft, and will run much cooler and take less power. You can keep the fixtures and replace the bulbs.
This is so great! My wife and I just bought YOUR MODEL! haha. 2004 Fleetwood 39s! We are about to upgrade all KINDS of stuff!
Awesome
Here is an idea for your closet. Why not make the walls cedar lined. That will give you additional strength for closet rods and help keep your clothes smelling good.
Great idea!
I greatly appreciate all your content. My wife and I will start RVing next year as I retire. We have some rental time under our belts and know it’s what we want to do 50% in retirement. You have shown us we can buy a mechanically good used RV and make it what we want inside! Thank you
Thanks for watching
Whatever it is that you don’t know what you’re doing you’re going to do it right I can’t wait to see the finished product. Thomyt
Thanks so much!
Good luck,if you paint the cabinets, spray them. Much better finish that way.
Thanks for the tip!
You got me I just found your channel and I'm going to watch.
Awesome!
Sounds like you're going to be rebuilding the whole inside of the RV, you're talking about repainting the head high cupboards/cabinets, but you're going to have to remove them to make head room above the bunks.
There will be more water damage inside the wardrobe than you think there is.
Good luck with this massive task you've taken on, I hope it doesn't end up looking like a homemade job and still looks like a professional build when you've finished.
Greetings from Sydney Australia.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching! We will have more to come soon / we’re hoping it turns out great.
If you have a leak it may not be from the roof, if that closet is a slide out it could be water intrusion from being even a tiny bit unleveled another one it could be is a pipe may have burst.
Looking forward to watch your progress on the renovations
Water damage or intrusion is almost a given, even on new RV's. Buyers need to be very aware of proper sealing of the many entry points and use the proper sealants for best results.
Ben! Your shirt is the best.
Thanks!
I will add also, when it comes to wood used in the RV, from our research when we did ours, you need to use stable wood, that means go with plywood when you can. When we built the bunk we also used oak and some pine. If you go that route, invest in a moisture meter that can measure the moisture level in the wood. It has to be low else, you will end up with problems. For the light, if you like the fixture, you can easily replace the bulb with LED equivalent bulb.
Thanks for the tips!
Looking forward to following your project and progress.
Your wood cabinets have a pretty light stain to them. I personally would leave them alone. The wall paint will do more to lighten it up and you’ll still have the desired contrast.
My .02
Thanks! I’m (Charity) personally leaning towards leaving them also. We shall see how they look after brightening everything up. Thanks for the comment.
There's lots of LED Options out there.
You guys got this and I’m sure you’ll have great results. Keep your eyes on the goal, best of luck. Safe travels, stay well.
Thanks!
I like the make over your doing. I would not paint the cabinets over head. Leave them. The lights on the side I would remove. On our rig they keep getting in the way. We removed them and replaced them with USB ports for know. We will change them later.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Cant wait to see finished project. Been seeing photos on Instagram. Always looking for ways to improve our RV.
Thanks!
Very excited to see the end results. We have an 05 Discovery 39s same color .
We are excited to show you the end results! It’s looking really good :) These Fleetwood Discovery’s are well built rigs. I’ve confirmed this even more so after pulling apart the inside and seeing the craftsmanship underneath that you don’t normally see.
Whatever other advice you get, keep working. Don't let analysis paralysis stop you. Don't let discouragement stop you. Don't let lack of knowledge stop you. Don't let lack of skill stop you. Don't let your lack of experience stop you. Don't let an inability to get the results you want stop you. Keep working until it is done.
And when it's over, if you decide you are never doing anything like it again, don't feel guilty and don't regret doing it.
Great tips - thanks!
The variety of LED lights these days (blubs and fixtures) is endless. I don't think you will have any issues finding LED replacements for any light you want to change. Also something I have often thought about to improve the water seal of the roof is after you know it's water tight have one of the truck bed liner elastomers sprayed on it. I know that stuff it tough. BTW, did you get this rig new? If so, it's leaking after just for years :-(
We bought it used (it’s 16 years old).
I have been watching your Instagram stories on your Reno too. We have always been too fearful to renovate our RV. For your cabinets I think you should gel stain them a medium brown with gray tint like a walnut stain. I think would go well with the white walls.
Thanks for the suggestion!
If you like those wall fixtures they make led replacement bulbs for all of them. We have a 08 fleetwood 38p since new changed all fixtures over to led. Best of luck with the renovation!!!
Thanks!
You can replace the sconce bulbs with LED bulbs if you decide to keep the fixtures. Same with ceiling fixtures where we installed warm white LED strips for about $8 per fixture.
Cool, thanks.
don't like the light from LED bulbs, hard for reading......
Get a water proof vinyl floor
what was your first rv
It was a 2000 Fleetwood Pace Arrow 34m
@@GratefulGlamper ok thanks
Rv manufacturers use cheap crap plywood as well
Id skip Miami in april.
We are headed to the Biscayne National Park area - which is near Miami.
Ok... we love you guys... but I need to try and block Leah from seeing this video so she doesn't get any ideas 😬😂 She's been talking about painting cabinets and peel-and-stick tile!
I'm also interested to see what you all end up with as far as furniture. I'm terrified to ever need to replace a sofa or something large... I look at the sofa, I look at the door, I look at the sofa again, I scratch my head... it's all so scary 😂
Don't paint you have way too much to do, you can always paint later .I'm sure you will do a good job but that way you will have more time.
That’s exactly what we were thinking as well. Thanks for watching!
