I hit a big piece of concrete in my 16 GT, and of course it smacked the computer for the power steering rack. New rack was $1,200+ installation and programming. I got a used one with the same spec as my car for $350. It was a pita to replace, but I saved a good $1200+.

You should try a $10 tube of shudder fix. I had the same issue on an FJ Cruiser 2 years ago and it’s been good since. It’s a common thing on early FJs and on 4Runners.
Bought a 2014 Sierra. In the last two years I've put more than $15,000 into it -- transmission, catalytic convertor, AC system and radiator leaking coolant, etc., etc., etc. Not to mention the entire electronic system is flaky as hell and sometimes the screen just decides it's not going to work. Decided to wait on replacing that until I absolutely have to. I LOVE the truck itself - the way it looks, the way it drives - it's frigging awesome. But the engineering is a disgrace. Will never buy another GMC.
Costs of maintenance now far exceed what the average consumer can afford. A hydrogen, turbine powered or electric car would be really cool but useless if no one can afford it.
This reminds me of a story my high school buddy's dad told about a guy who bought a Buick and was complaining about parts costing more than a chevy. His friend told him that if you buy a hog you have to feed it.
I have a 2007 Escalade, pretty amazing car especially for its age. Good technology, all sounds and whistles. Only thing is that , when it comes to fix anything, it gets out of control. Now our Escalade has an approximately 233k miles. Pretty high. Now going to the steering wheel thing, right, it might not be electrochemical but the rubber band that goes round it, it breaks quite frequently. We recently replaced it and less than a month later, it broke. 😮. Then the power steering oil starts to leak. It’s really annoying. But I can’t judge, is nice and it still gets a lot of looks especially with its own white preal diamond color!
Hydraulic Power steering isn't bulletproof. We had to replace the pump in my dad's silverado at 150k miles. Being electric probably isn't the issue, the racks can fail when they lose lubrication and needs to be replaced regardless of being hydraulic or electric. But the reason for the electric power steering is for fuel efficiency. Constantly turning a pump that makes constant pressure consumes extra fuel, while the electric power steering only uses power as you steer. You'll find that many of today's problems with cars are in an effort to conserve fuel.
Exactly why I don’t play “Keep up with the Jones’”.. I’m perfectly fine with my 98 dodge 1500, 90 Silverado Sport and or my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee.. Zero car payments, cheap insurance.. and WAY easier to fix.. We live in a “Throw away” world now. Something breaks.. throw it away and buy something new.. 😂 I’ll stick to my method. Stay blessed down there @Craig!!
Yes the Manufacturer came up with the Electric Power Steering, but mainly because of Government mandates. The Electric Power Steering does not use as much of the engine to power the pump, so in theory you'll get better fuel millage. Less Government intervention is what we need.
The power steering boxes on my 1987 Mercedes (760000 km) and 1996 Trooper (300000 km) both are original untouched. And they probably still will be when that GM rack needs to be replaced again!
The E-Ray is actually quicker than the Z06. Everything is going electronic due to efficiency and emissions standards. Pretty soon, they're going to start using electric A/C compressors.
In 2006 i Bought a Camry as a commuter car, kept the Mustang and Lariat F150 Crew for local driving. figured i would keep the Camry until it died. as of today i still have it, still a daily driver. Tampa area so the heat has been roughest on the paint.... but we are at 442k miles and still going.... no sensors, no automation, maintence costs are below average. Sometimes it pays to just buy a reliable car for your family... no frills just pure reliability.
Yea, that gen Camry is one of the most reliable cars ever if ya need basic, reliable, comfortable transportation. The 2001-2006 model gen, especially the 4 cylinder. In 07’ the redesigned Camry started to have oil consumption issues around 180-200k.
You couldn't even pay me to own this generation of escalade. There are exactly zero good versions of escalades in this generation. Escalades have attained German car status....lease only and dump it on the next dreamer.
The reason why they do that is because you don't own the vehicle your leasing the vehicle with newer vehicle's you never own them cause you have to go to the dealership to get everything done
Hey Craig you are big money now, you live in a gated community in a mansion! Just pay up and enjoy the good weather down there, maybe it was really better economically where you came from than in FL.? A lot of American cars and trucks don't really hold up very well anymore? That's life!
Not sure if there was any other issues but GM/Chevy has a known issue with bad grounds. So I unfortunately have electric steering in my High County (bought used) & steering would lock up at slow speeds & occasionally truck would die. Though I don't know all the yrs it's effected but the main fixes besides what stealership will try to sell u on, the frame ground is an issue honestly for the $40-50 for new negative cable it was way easier & cheaper to replace it (also replaces block ground at same time vs trying to clean old one & frame) the other grounds are under dash up on the same bolts as speakers ( like who thought putting grounds on things that purposely vibrate besides road conditions) like I mentioned I know it's a common issue from 14-20ish but not sure all yrs and models.
Man, why is everyone ragging you? You're living the American Dream, bigger than some, smaller than many. Congratulations! Gonna do any vids on car warranty companies. My trans started to shudder when it was new, and the Caddy store said they all drive that way, even took for a ride in a fresh off the hauler Escalade. Took it to my tranny man, get ShudderFix. Still waiting on the recall. Just got new Generals, need to use my lifetime alignment at Firestone.
That won’t happen he was very successful and setup financial security years ago. He has a lot of monthly income from many different investments. He rents out parking spaces and a bunch of other stuff. But believe what you want he can take it
It used to be so inexpensive to fix the older cars. No Computer Systems. Simple. Go to the parts store, pickup part. You install. Now everything is. Crap there's $1898.99 on my Credit Card.
Really surprised that the whole rack needed replacement. I did the electric power steering motor in a 2006 HHR under the dash in 45 minutes. Part was $100. You have had some bad luck! I had a 2016 Escalade Premium. Bought it with 55,000 (from my dad's estate) and traded it on a Silverado LTZ at 72,000. No problems whatsoever. None. My previous 2014 Escalade had 70,000 on it when I bought it and I sold it at 99,000 when I bought the 2016. Again, no problems whatsoever. My truck is a '22 (5.3 liter) and now has 65,000 on it. No problems. None. I pull a 7,000 lb. travel trailer very nicely with the pickup. Sorry for your bad luck. It happens.
Great looking Truck. But man oh man. Ridiculous to have all those expensive repairs with 72K miles Many years ago I had a “04. With 230K miles that looked , ran and drove perfect. The good old days of Escalade !
It doesn't have an electric power steering pump. It has an electric motor. Its not pumping anything. . Its simpler than hydraulic. One motor replaces the pump, belt, the reservoir, liquid. If well made, you won't ever worry about it.
My wife wanted an Escalade, I insisted we get Lexus lx570 which was older and had more miles. It's been mostly trouble free and it's got 200k miles now, no engine or transmission issues, both are expected to run into 500k miles, hydraulic power steering has been working like a champ. Unfortunately Cadillac is junk.

The dealer ADM'S on Corvettes ship has long since sailed, that's why the car is still sitting there
Great video , welcome to our retail world and cost. Keep it up 👍
You can still drive without ps. It's a great workout. Electric emergency brakes suck Hader to change rear brakes
Craig what type of bike do u have? Is it a Huffy, Schwinn, or Cannondale, Giant, Fuji????
Programming is not proprietary through GM. I pay $50 per vin for a subscription and program with my laptop and j2534 Cardaq box from home.
And put Adam on, at least he is interesting to watch.
You couldn't even pay me to own this generation of escalade. There are exactly zero good versions of escalades in this generation. Escalades have attained German car status....lease only and dump it on the next dreamer.
one of the reason why I got rid of my Yukon Xl. nothing but issues.
Electric steering is there for Auto driving - whether your vehicle has options for the auto driving or not.
One reason I chose a new Nissan Titan truck is it has hydraulic steering. I've never had to repair the hydraulic steering in any vehicle in my 80 yrs.
Craig FYI auto Zone and O"Reilly auto part have hand held diagnostics.
no electric steering for me.
More crying wheels. Whaaa my Luxury car is broken, parked next to my 2 other luxury cars before I pick up my next luxury car. Dude you lost your way.
I couldn't agree more, Craig. Modern vehicles are stupidly complex.
Now again another camera video, why waste our time with the same crap that's sponsored
It is the only way he makes money
Man, why is everyone ragging you? You're living the American Dream, bigger than some, smaller than many. Congratulations! Gonna do any vids on car warranty companies. My trans started to shudder when it was new, and the Caddy store said they all drive that way, even took for a ride in a fresh off the hauler Escalade. Took it to my tranny man, get ShudderFix. Still waiting on the recall. Just got new Generals, need to use my lifetime alignment at Firestone.
Lol be bankrupt soon.
That won’t happen he was very successful and setup financial security years ago. He has a lot of monthly income from many different investments. He rents out parking spaces and a bunch of other stuff. But believe what you want he can take it
A better option is a rear view digital camera with front and rear dash cams built in
It used to be so inexpensive to fix the older cars. No Computer Systems. Simple. Go to the parts store, pickup part. You install. Now everything is. Crap there's $1898.99 on my Credit Card.
I really, really want a new Suburban, but too many stories like this one😢
My 05 yukon has 230k.never had a problem with drivetrain or power steering lol
I truely agree Craig.. I want a vehicle with V-8, manual locks, manual windows, manual transmission, with regular power steering and No tech crap...
Yes with hydraulic steering
Ridiculous to have all those expensive repairs with 72K miles
Many years ago I had a “04. With 230K miles that looked , ran and drove perfect.
The good old days of Escalade !
mass produced is what it is as every brand has issues.
Mr. Scott from Star Trek said this--- "The more you overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain"!!!
It doesn't have an electric power steering pump. It has an electric motor. Its not pumping anything. . Its simpler than hydraulic. One motor replaces the pump, belt, the reservoir, liquid. If well made, you won't ever worry about it.
I had that happen to my 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, it needed an entire rack. Common repair on these GM vehicles.
2007 + escalades, Yukons, Tahoe, Suburban has so many issues days gone the good reliable when u can see them with 300k+ miles with minor issues
You should look up Rainman Ray for your mechanicals, qualified and honest.
GM sells the motor for the rack. $380 on Rock Auto.
My wife wanted an Escalade, I insisted we get Lexus lx570 which was older and had more miles. It's been mostly trouble free and it's got 200k miles now, no engine or transmission issues, both are expected to run into 500k miles, hydraulic power steering has been working like a champ. Unfortunately Cadillac is junk.
great stuff thanks
Craig you buy all this expensive stuff for yourself and give your wife a so-so SUV's. How about getting her a HONDA PILOT that is better quality 4x4? Think of your family?
Power steering fails, make a video to pay for repair! Craig, make a video if your move to FL was a mistake so far. Please.
