  • I wanted to replacing the old fuel tank becuase it looked nackered in part (s), but I then decided to just get it referbished by a company in Hartlepool, really glad I took it to them as they did a good job on it. I also replaced to old fuel sender unit with a new one from Mercedes in Blackburn, Lancahsire, plus I changed all the old fuel pipe connectors and wire fittings that joined up to the new sender uniit as well.
The serial number for the sender unit is shown in the video:

When you say strugling, do you mean you cant get the filter out with the tank in place, or you mean you cant turn the fuel sendor unit / filter out

Thats a good price Gerry for a new tank, can I ask though, do your still need to seal the outside and inside of the tank, like they did with my tank.

@@HymerS660withjeffriva I haven't collected it yet so haven't seen it but I would think it's ready to install . A bigger worry is the price of a new sender unit , they seem to be very expensive ! Is there any sort of universal unit that could be used ?

@@gerrymulroy2545 Hi Gerry, I dont think there is an alternative sender unit to fit these tanks, that's why I just bought the OEM Mercedes one. Otherwise your just going to be wasting your time and money trying to get something else to fit/work. It's not worth the hassle, just buy a new one.

Nice job! Did you feel a noticeable difference in performance after installing a new clean tank filter?

I wasn't so much a better performance after I fitted the new tank / sender unit, plus a new inline filter (s). But now all those parts have been replaced, and seeing fresh clean diesel fuel passing through the inline filter it does make the engine run and feel a lot smoother. As I'm sure you know, when you drive any type of vehicle, you start to get a feel of how your engine is operating / running / performing on a daily basis and my engine is running excellent / smooth now from changing these parts. Also I still need to change out all my fuel hose (s) as old rubber hose's do start to deteriorate inside & out (cracks) over time 30 years, so all those little rubber particle will eventually start to block up your inline filters - thuse effecting your engines performance. Cheers Jeff

Is there a fuel pump inside the sender on these? Are the two thick wires on top of the sender to power such a pump, or are they for the fuel tank gauge in the dash only? I’m an electrical automation engineer and I think those wires look too thick to just be signal wires for the fuel gauge, but there could be a reason for that?

No the sender unit, is just the filter that comes from the tank, and the two wires are for the sender / sliding float inside the alloy tube to send info to your tank gauges on your dashboard. Most people also (me included) have an added inline filter as well either before the fuel pump or just before the lift pump which is were I have mine. See other video on the channel.
