    I returned two years ago to take care of a parent. Now they are deceased, I plan to take my foreign mind and return to the U.S. I cannot put up with the rudeness and inefficiency that is rampant in every business, not just shipping barrels. Also tired of people constantly expecting money from me.

      Its such a same. Jamaica best assets are Jamaicans. Can you imagine how farther along Jamaica would be if so many skilled and educated Jamaicans in the diaspora were returning home before they were at retirement age? Instead of solely courting the Chinese, Indians and Arabs to invest in Jamaica, the government should've been courting the diaspora first.

Most of my experiences with Jamaican businesses, professionals, and other people have been very positive--yes even the local branch of my bank. My bad experience importing items into Jamaica was the only issue I wanted to highlight. People are moving or returning to Jamaica for a number of reasons and one of them is that the quality of life, food, culture, and more are better here. Stress, toxic chemicals, and frankenfoods are cutting people's lives short abroad. 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲

    I think the bigger issue outside the bad customer service are the arbitrary customs fees. For example many were without power and other essentials for over a month during Beryl. The government should have waived custom fees to aid in the recovery. Instead people are being charged for shipping consumer generators down and being told they are commercial items. That is a government that is not looking out for its citizens.

It should be very quick to get your things and it shouldn't be an all-day process. Also the price they charge whatever they want to and whoever they want that should be illegal in America they have one standard price for things. We are going there to invest in the country not to be stupid thieves, we are educated and going back to give back to the country and make it better, why frustrate the people.

    All of this is true. But you need to readjust your departing country’s mentality when deciding to return home. Trust me I share the frustration. Jamaica is sloooooooooow. There are a lot of inefficiencies. Everything takes multiple attempts and no transaction takes less than a day. No one is ever in a rush which drive me crazy. But that stress pales in comparison to everything Jamaica has to offer where the country you’re leaving for does not. Just take it in stride.
    What Jamaica can adopt is what is done in Barbados. To encourage their ppl to return, the country allows you a one time duty free shipping on everything including vehicles. And guess what? Many of their people return which does well for their already booming economy.

      @Promise-nb2xw 2 месяца назад +2

      Yes! Many forgot why they left Jamaica. On returning, they quickly realize that living in a country that is virtually absent of customer service is a nightmare. This is the reason why many migrate and most of the rest of the country will leave if they ever have the chance. If "homesick" the suggestion is to take a trip, stay in an AirBnB, and hightail it back to foreign choice asap. However, if choosing to stay in Jamaica, the advice is to limit contact with the general population. Keep your business to yourself and keep a vehicle in good running order, stock up on essentials, and try your best not to look to or depend on anyone. Try NOT to speak, as they will pick up the accent. Don't overtalk. If forced to venture out, wear your worst gray clothes- a little dirt on them could be advantageous. Also, rather than shipping in a container with the massive $$ for land transport, it could be better to dash wey all the furniture, appliances, and large items and buy on arrival. Only ship those things that are important, keepsakes, hard to find etc. Also, prepare for the thieves.

    Doing any business in Jamaica is a headache. My mother, a returned resident, has been trying to get her land title for more than a decade, she and the seller has provided all the documents requested by the lawyer yet the process seem to be going nowhere. He said the courts are backed up with no estimate as to when she might get her title.
    When my mother was building her house she went through so much headache to get a blueprint, have it approved, then get the permit from the parish council to build, then when it was time to get the power company to connect electricity it was another hell. She ships barrels and containers all the time and complain about the process. I don't know how she continues to do it but I wish I had her patience and tolerance.

The powers-there-be don't care if black Jamaicans return or not. In fact, the more they frustrate black Jamaicans abroad, and the more black Jamaicans are unwilling to return, the better the power structure feels. That's why there is a large contingent of Latinos, Asians and eastern Europeans now living in Jamaica.
