Have a very Happy New Year - thank you for all the awesome videos you did this year! I too was disappointed in the Wing Sung 3007 although initially I really liked it because of the nib.
TY for that information, I don't have any of those, but just bought a Hero full metal Iraurita for about $4.50 and it's writing real dry. When I pick it up after a day or so, it won't write, I have to flush the converter which on a consistant basis is such a waste of ink. I've tried the brass sheet and pressing on the nib to no avail, won't give up yet, also when re capping, the cap is slightly off center which is very strange. This may be on the 'bad' list yet, too bad, it's a pretty pen with a nice heft.
8:13 what i did to that one was mix some epoxy, stick the pens butt in it, wait for it to dry, then fill it up as an eyedropper....... And then it cracked
Hey, your videos are really cool👍👍 I d like to ask a question : I m looking for a fountain pen piston filler. I don't really like the design of 3008 especially the nib. I am considering buying a 618 or 698. A quick opinion/ recommendation ? Happy New year all !
I have the 698. I think it’s okay. I have it with a medium nib (although I ordered a F, got the wrong one). It sometimes skipps, leaves a bit to much ink on the page (for me, although I’m used to F pens) and the transparent feed got permanently stained from the first ink i used in it (Diamine Sargasso Sea). One time the piston stuck, when I tried to force it, the piston mekanism slipped and could not be moved. Once I managed to open the pen and clean it, it now works again. Mine have gotten some microscopic scratches in the plastic. I guess I would not tell people to not buy it, although I would consider if it’s not better to buy a Twisbi Eco (I haven’t tried it myself). I hope this helps :)
TWSBI maybe worth looking at... If you can get a go with one before you buy it would be best,,, I have the 580AL which you don't like the mech. Have a look at the Vac 700 and the mini vac... If you like the mini read up about it because you can crack it, I've had to epoxy mine but I'm a heavy handed bugger. If you don't mind messing about to get it working right... look at Noodlers Ahab but again, look them up. SBRE Brown and Nathan Tardiff's InkNeedLastForever.com are quite honest about the pens. I hope you find what you want... Best wishes LeZc @@
To add one bad, bad, bad pen to the pile of bad piston converters - Wing Sung 3009. After the massive success WS had with 3008, they went on making another piston filler with transparent mechanism, which is nice and the same grip like the Lanbitou 3059 and really cheap, badly moulded plastic. The step from 3008 to 3009 is really insane.
I have that one as a brush pen and I can agree with that. There is a lot of play in the converter and it does not have the same suction as the 3008. I am surprised that they didn't just reuse the 3008 piston
Great idea, and a great video! Question: There's an interesting looking pocket pen on Ebay that might be a Hero pen, but I'm unsure - the description lists it as "3 inch mini metal fountain pen"; if you have the chance, would you consider reviewing that one?
@@jpl2475 i suggest buying straight from the FRP site. Their shipping fee is a little less expensive than the jetpens one and you can see more models of theirs. The Jetpens site carries only one or two models.
JPL thanks. I’ll look into it. Everyone’s mileage varies and the wing sung 6359 would appear on my pass list. I own 3 and two have terrible nibs (EF) and the other one has the plastic threads in the body which pull out every time I try to uncap the pen. So I’ve made a frankenpen with all the parts.
The moonman 80s looks to me like a rebranded or white label pen. I didn't buy one specifiy because I saw identical pens under at least 2 other labels. I like my moonman m2 but I determined these were not actual moonman products.
Happy holidays to you too! Do you dislike the aesthetics of the TWSBI Eco? You mentioned that you didn't like how the Lanbitou has a hexagonal cap and a cylindrical body and that's the same as the TWSBI Eco
I don't think the ECO is a beautiful looking pen. Though its so great at writing and it is so good as a long term EDC pen that I don't think its aesthetics really matter.
I think Kaco Retro should be added to the list. I bought two, both of them had glue problems. The company was well cared for but this shouldn't have been a problem at first. Except for a few models should not buy a fountain pen made in China Because they are not the quality of a German or Japanese fountain pen. All the Chinese fountain pens I bought are problematic.
I disagree with you on Moonman 80s. I own 2 short Moonman 80S (which have same nibs and feeds as long 80S) and they write smoothly without any skips. I have enjoyed using them, though I agree that they don't produce line variations, they are definitely a good everyday pens. I think you might have got a defect pen.
Gotta say, I like the Moonman 80S aesthetics (Parker 45 for a fraction of the price and no slap-fights on ebay) but I have noticed the nib skipping and drying up ocassionally. My actual Parker 45 writes much more nicely. (I'd get a 45 nib for the 80S, but same problem - the thing costs more than the whole pen did...)
I bought a lamy al star purple graphite for £30 and its a big let down, i find it quite hard to use and the blue ink is really watery and bright, i hate the ink so im probably gonna buy the z28 converter, never buying this fountain pen again
On the other hand, the standard M80 is much better BUT for gods sake don't apply any pressure to the nib. Most pens have nibs sturdy enough for a heavy hand and spring back into original state if force is applied, the M80 nib does not whatsoever. Writes well with Quink ink but has feed issues with Diamine Majestic Blue if left uncapped for a minute, otherwise it's a very wet nib. Has some drag for a left handed person but nothing a bit of micromesh won't fix.
I was always wondering if whatever "sheen" is, clogs feeds. Everybody says to avoid pigmented inks and then you got inks with gold flakes and stuff, which are supposedly just fine.
@@hrnekbezucha Majestic Blue doesn't have much of a sheen or solid materials in it, it's very consistent with fine and medium nibs and only the M80 had issues with it, my 3008's and other dirt cheap pens have no feeding issues with any ink I've tried so far.
Added all together all these pens cost about 10$ combined. I think most of us in fountain pens are in it because we want something nicer. Ask yourself does 2$ on a pen really push that "something nicer" agenda we have?
