At the Chicago-Land pen show I had a chance to buy the Visconti ( I think) Wall Street for $400. It was new. I passed on it but later learned that at that price it was a great bargain.

Had a chance to pick up a brand new Pelikan M1000 at a sweet _sweet_ discount. Took it! Even got the EF nib I wanted. But yeah, just the basic black with gold trim. That nib though is absolutely sweet! Just writes broader than its EF designation.

I bought a Platinum 3776 with an SF nib. At the shop they didn't have testers, so I had to go on the feeling of the dry nib on paper (admittedly a mistake, but live and learn!). In a local-to-me FB fountain pen buy and sell group I came across an old 3776 celluloid in the tortie finish with a 14 K nib and pulled the trigger before ever having inked up the SF one (mistake number two).
After inking up the new one, I discovered that the 3776 likes to be held at a 45 degree angle whereas I tend to come in around 60-70 degrees (which may or may not be a lefty thing) - AND the old model needs a matching old converter which is out of production, but the seller still has some... I love the look of both my 3776 pens, and I want to love the writing experience, but I'll need to explore possible solutions: modify my grip (lowering the angle), getting a custom grind (naginata togi) or selling them off as is.
The 3776 is the only pen (including inexpensive Platinum steel nibs on the Plaisir and the Prefounte) that has an issue with my writing angle...

I'm a huge Visconti fan. I absolute love the Homo Sapien Bronze Age, and they now have one called "Crystal Dream" that I can't wait to try.
Scribo is an Italian company, and if you haven't seen the Scribo Feel, take a look, and find a way to try one. At about $750, they aren't cheap, but the shape and size put them in a class by themselves. It's one of the best feeling, hence the name, and best writing pens I've ever seen.

The only pen I regret not buying is the Omas Arco brown Paragon. I could have had it at a pen show for $700 used, but in excellent shape. I DID get a used Omas Ogiva Arco brown with a "flessible" nib (at a pen show). I don't remember what I paid, but it was not a cheap pen. The first run of Paragons had a section made of the same material as the pen body and cap; the later edition had a metal section, and I dislike metal sections.

I have no idea why I was never bitten by the Montblanc bug. I've owned a couple, but only because I got them at ridculouskly low prices. I paid twenty bucks for one at a garage sale. I've used several loaned to me by friends who were trying to convert me, and all were spectacular writers, but they just never interested me.
Despite my love for extremely expensive fountain pens, I've never been rich. I'm just very, very good at finding ways to buy what I want at very low prices. There are simply too many great companies, too many great pens, and never enough money to buy everything I love. Namiki, Sailor, Conway Stewart, Waterman, and Pilot have always kept me satisfied and broke.
Now I've ha dto add Scribo to the list.
On top of this, I absolutely love unusual and unique pens. I'm a sucker for the pens with mammoth ivory barrels, for instance. And despite the talk about expensive pens, I love some of the Jinhao dragon pens. Well, yeah, they work a lot better when you replace teh cheap Jinhao nib with a gold nib. But once you do, some of these pens are spectacular, and would cost hundreds of dollars if made in Europe or America.
Some of the worst pens I've ever owned have been souvenir pens sold in gift shops everywhere. I still love them. I can persuade most of them to write reasonably well with some TLC, but they're still junk. I don't care. I still buy them.

I regret not buying some more Waterman pens at the beginning of my hobby 15 years ago. At that time those pens (like the Le Man 100 Patrician) were just used versions of current models. Now they are out of production and way more expensive but I got enough models to be content. However I have some rules and one of them is: "Don't get a heart attack if the pen is lost, stolen or damaged", so this limits the price a bit. If it's too expensive, I'd be afraid of taking it with me to work and then it would be just an expensive piece of unused plastic. I still have far more pens than a sane person would need.
I don't regret not buying some limited editions although they are beautiful but then again I don't have to buy the Mona Lisa to admire it.
If you like celluloid, go vintage. I have some amazing Centropens (10014, 10016). You could sit there and gaze at the deep swirls of celluloid for hours and they are rather cheap and decent writers.
BTW I have a used Montblanc 146 and it's big enough for me. No need for a 149. And I still think they're overpriced.

    • @peterpuleo2904
      @peterpuleo2904 5 лет назад +2

I think no "sane person" needs more than, at most, 10 fountain pens, which will cover various nibs, colors, etc. I also am not a "sane person". On the other hand, it can be fun to be not too "sane".

I patiently waited for a Pilot size 15 PO nib to become available at a reasonable price. Wanted it for about 2 years, but it was extortionatly marked up compared to other size 15 Pilot nibs. I already had a size 10 PO and thought maybe I shouldn't bother, but when I saw it at 300 instead of 4xx I decided not to let it pass. It's back at 4xx now, and I'm glad I finally got it.
I sometimes think I would want an urushi or makie pen, and I could afford it, but it just seems like... If I want some novel material, or some one of a kind thing, I'd rather look into making something myself. I don't want to be someone who obsesses over the beauty of a reproduction, or fetishizes the Japanese. And I can just see myself losing all interest in it 5 minutes after I'd held it in my hands. I justify luxury purchases when I can think I wouldn't miss the money, but I also don't want to be holding an expensive purchase and realise it brings no more joy than anything I already had. I don't want to find myself with an enormous collection of tools I don't use, or feel like I am only using to justify the existence of them. I'm wary of trying too hard to recreate a moment of remembered happiness, as when first discovering fountain pens. I'm wary of being a person who spends too much money on themselves, and not enough on others.
For me the question of acquisition is not only financial, but demands a philosophical response as well, as in whether or not there is real happiness in it. I let myself have a spare of nibs I liked, because I enjoyed the act of writing and these specialty nibs may not be around forever if mine is damaged, but beyond that I find it hard to think I'd be happier if I finally bought a Lamy2k to see what it is all about, or bought a pretty celuloid, or bought whatever else. I already feel kind of disgusted that I have over a dozen gold nib pens. It's a strange hobby we have when ostensibly the real hobby was supposed to be writing.

I don't think loving Maki-e or Chinkin pens have anything at all to do with a Japanese fetish. That's pretty insulting, and borders on racist. It's about beauty, talent, skill and dedication that should be rewarded, whoever makes it. I don't give a rat's behind who does something. When they do it well enough, they deserve to be respected, and their work deserves to be used.
For me, at least, using a Maki-e or a Chinkin DOES bring far more joy that using any other pen. Price has absolutely nothing to do with it. If you buy anything just because it's expensive, you're a fool. If you don't buy something you can afford out of fear, you're a bigger fool.
I do understand what you mean about spending money on others, but this is often misguided, as well. That wonderful and brilliant philosopher known as :"Anonymous" said a couple of things I took to heart long ago. 1. The man who buys something simply because it's expensive is a fool. The man who refuses to buy something simply because it's expensive is a bigger fool." 2. The man who goes through like wearing sackcloth and ashes is as vain as the man who goes through life bedecked in silk and jewels. Both as just saying, "Hey, look at me. Am I not special?
He or she also said, "The foolish man spends his time handing out fish to the poor. The wise man spends time teaching the poor how to fish. The great man teaches the poor how to fish, and then buys their catch."
So answer me this. Who employs more people, gives them jobs to feed their families, which makes them proud, and who does more to reward the artists who spend a lifetime of dedication developing their talent into a skill that allows them to create true beauty, the man in sackcloth and askes who hands them a fish, or the man who buys their catch.
Go ask the artists who create Maki-e and Chinkin pens what they think. Go ask all the workers employed by Namiki what they think. Go ask all the business people and their workers who sell all of life's necessities to the Namiki employees what they think.
And, seriously, who give a rat's whisker about owning a dozen fountain pens with gold nibs, and then buying another? No one with any sense. There is no magic number. If one is all right, then one thousand is also fine. There are no degrees of sin. It's like being pregnant. You is or you ain't, and sin is the same way. Greed, lust, whatever, you do or you don't, and "Well, I only bought one" is like saying, "Well, I only murdered once".
      enjoyed

Never really considered the 149 or any Montblanc pen, for decades. Reasons: I'm a technician and tinkerer and I knew that Montblanc aren't exactly service-by-user friendly. Also, they're heftily overpriced just because they're Montblanc. But I finally got one as a gift, a standard black & gold 149, and I'm very happy with it. Flawless pen, you won't see any criticism against it from me. Love it. But I'll never put any nasty ink in it.
Have a celluloid 3776, it's pretty and nice, but I rarely use it. IMO the standard 3776s are better pens.
Regret not buying? A blue M605. Only the M600 is available in blue now. Only other thing I can think of is a Visconti Opera Master. The currently available models don't attract me. Someday I will probably regret not getting a black Homo Sapiens Lava. But I'm not gonna buy any. I don't like the bronze fittings. I don't fret about these things. Compulsions need to be fought. I can do without them. It's a lot of money that can be spent on other things.
Like you, there is a possible purchase of a M1000 in the future. But also like you, I figure I already have enough Pelikans. I have a Duofold I got long ago. It would be a wonderful writing instrument if it was decently sealed. But it was made back in the years when Parker quality was not exactly at the top, so it's not. The nib is more than perfect though. I might try another Duofold someday, but as I said, I don't fret about these things. You have to stay sane. Too many new pens are launched every year. I have no planned purchases.

I only have one Aurora with a steel nib, and it has a nice soft bounce to it. Is this generally true of Aurora nibs?

I’ve never actually used a steel nib Aurora! The Golds are fantastic though

I like your videos but wish you would stop rocking back and forth when standing; it is sort of annoying. (No offense intended).

      It’s a force of habit, I can’t stand/sit still. I’ll try to do better

@@PensandTea You are so sweet. I hate making a comment like this but thought it would make for a better video. :)

I have a modest collection of fps - three 3776's, two Diplomats, two Lamy 2000's plus a few other brands. This might sound crazy, but I'm wary of using them for fear of wearing out the nibs. I notice that you have some very expensive pens and wonder whether you actually use them. I believe most fp collectors only buy super expensive pens as fetish objects - in short, baubles.

I do use almost all my pens on a fairly regular basis. When I notice I don’t use them often enough I will sell them so that they go to a good home 👌🏼

That sounds wise. I store the ones I'm not using. I sometimes gaze at them in their in their Aston case and promise that I'll write a play or short story with at least one of them!

You don't need to fear wearing out the nib at all. You will never wear it down in your lifetime.

Not even a Platinum 3776 fine nib? I can't see any tipping on the nib - beautuful as that pen is.

Darryl Foster There's not a lot of information about it, but apparently 60 years ago they used to say it should last 12 years of 8 hour use a day. Nakaya thinks their pens should write 5 to 6 million characters. If you rotate your pens, they should all last your lifetime. If you use just one and you truly write prolifically, maybe you can wear it out. If you write maybe 5 to 10 hours a week, I think it should last. You can be proud if you ever wear out the tip in this modern age. Enjoy your pens how you want to, but don't be worried they'll be ruined if you use them.

Funny, Optima Auroloide led me to the Aurora appeal of 88 which led to Saturno. It looks waay better IRL not to mention the 18K nib is pretty sweet. That said, this first lux purchase is under house arrest as too precious for a daily outside writer. Regrets: missing the 6 hour decision window before some lucky soul snapped up a Sailor KOP clear demonstrator in Naginata Togi medium before the Sailor revamp to the current plain body specialty nib lineup. Reason over emotion, grumbles...

Pens and Tea Let me know if you want to sell it. Maybe you could use the $$ towards a MB 149 or that gorgeous Pelikan M1000 Raden pen. Start the “Free the Pelikan Fund”. 😁
