Assignment Asia: Elephants of Kerala

- The Indian state of Kerala is unique in its obsession for elephants. Apart from keeping elephants as pets, the state also uses them for public events and religious rituals. Some owners even send their elephants for Ayurveda treatment where the giant mammals undergo detoxification and are treated to nourishing foods and medicines. But as Jyothy Karat found out, animal welfare groups, with concerns that elephants are suffering from pet abuse, are calling for a countrywide ban on using elephants in public and religious events.

A documentary from a western media outlet would have had a completely different narrative (mostly negative). This however, had a surprisingly balanced point of view coming from a Chinese media firm.
Do you not see how they are maintained on chains and separated from their family?!?!

*Thats the beauty of Keralam. Rich hindu culture and traditions* 😍
EDIT: I’m a keralite Christian but 90% of our customs are Hindu influenced. Elephants are a huge part of our state’s culture as a whole regardless of religion.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I have seem several video of Kerala. Really beautiful. Love your's all of tradition.. from Bangladesh.
Kindly note that the beauty of Kerala culture, is due to openhearted embrace of cultures from distant lands, making it such an unique amalgamation.
Your view that these are Hindu traditioms does not cut much ice, since the river Sindhu, from where the phrase 'Hindu' originated, is thousands of kilometres away from the presitinely green tropical forests of Kerala.
@@mustafanizam2608 ha ha ha burned ass
@@mustafanizam2608 Oh really, you seem to have so much knowledge. Firstly the culture and traditions shown here are definitely Hindu or Sanatan Darma (For Smart Asses Like You). Secondly beauty of Kerala is not about openhearted embrace of cultures from distant lands, because cultures from different land (Eg: Arab) had come to Kerala because of its proximity to the middle east. So it cannot be an openhearted embrace for sure. Rather you could say that early people in Kerala could be easily converted by foreign people. That's how Islam was introduced in India. You could do a background check and find out that you too were converted from Hinduism to Islam centuries ago !
People of Kerala genuinely love elephants and they take care like no one in the world . It's a different relationship all together ... Beyond animal rights etc ...
That is BULLSHIT!! You’re people show a facade of how they want t
It’s been documentated and shown how you actually treat these beautiful creatures! With whips chains and beatings all in the name of religion! Yeah they take care of them like no one in the world that’s absolutely right but your abusive nasty people in the world sees what you are doing to these animals and for you to stay that they care is an absolutely freaking joke! The world is watching! There are videos etc. to prove you are misleading! Absolutely disgusting!
I really like the man who talks to the elephant in the video. I think he has more connection than the real owner has with the elephant when it comes to pampering. As you can see he calls him "kunja", which shows an unconditional love towards the animal.

Wow., Kerala is so beautiful. I've been in Mangalore for a few years. There is so much resemblance between the Tulu culture and that of Kerala. What I've seen more in common in both the places is how mild people there are. Really gentle beings.
There are two sides, two truths to each thing. Mild maybe but if you live here you will know more. I'm not telling anyone is bad but too much of good is rare on earth. Have you been to Japan?
@@nikhilsukumar23 true.
I don't like the present kerala.
@Hello Boy true, in the olden days the Tulu kings invaded Kerala from the North and we adopted many of the Tulu customs over the next hundresds of years, mainly matrilineal inheritance and the ancestoral worship of family spirits like theiyyam .
Southern Kerala however is not very influenced as they are not mixed with Tuluvas , maybe a small % like the royal family but not the majority
@@porothashawarma2339 he's right , this happened thousands of years ago. That's why the old script Tulu looked like Malayalam but now it is wriiten in Kannada, very interesting to note

A beautiful, almost lyrical story of elephants and the bond they share with the people, rituals and worship in Kerala. A truly wonderful documentary which transports you to the land in which these behemoths live!
I am from Kerala. Initially I also thought that we take really good care of elephants. But my perception changed when I saw a elephant herds roaming freely in Munnar. Elephant are social animals they need to be free.
Hmm they are mostly free in india
Wow so progressive! Very thought provoking words!
Thengada mood,
I saw a few bunch while traveling to Munnar and they were so dangerously close to my car and others. We stood there for like more than an hour or so.
Well dogs are pack animals too but here we are keeping them in our apartments away from other dogs
this attempt at comparison is very tendentious.
I have dogs, but I DON'T KEEP THEM CONSTANTLY in chains.
And certainly dogs are social animals: in fact we humans are their pack.
Something very different from elephants, FORCED to "golden" slavery, but always slavery
Please stop comparing South to North...... Every
Part of india has her exceptional beauty without any respect to another, i dont hate anyone, I love everyone but most of all I love my all Indian friends irrespective of their caste, religion, ethnicity, etc

Nice documentary showing the culture, tradition and elephants as a living legend.Thankyou chinese tv, take care of the Panda
we have historical books which explains all the medicines and treatments which have to be taken in every season. all the elephant owners in Kerala are well aware of this and they are also following the same. actually as the chairman said a good and healthy elephant is a pride to the area and to family. so we look after it with that much care.
A humble comment from a keralite,
Yes. It was evident the love and care of the whole village towards their elephant. But with the world changing, the morals, ethics and realisation how closely everything is crushing towards extinction I wonder if people of Kerala district are looking forward towards the future with ZERO elephants in captivity? Are the plans for making mahouts guardians of the forests? Looking after welfare of wild animals in a wild? Reforesting? Tree planting? Bee keeping? Anything for them in a life without ellies? Maybe they should get work in sanctuaries for rescued elephants? They are the experts in understanding those creatures. Did you see any rescues done by Wildlife SOS?..? MOST of those films should be titled "The Walking Dead of India"....I give you the bulls in this film were in top condition! Magnificent.....shame about the chains....I cringed every time I noticed those....
one day i will visit kerala.

Beautiful filming & people. I know they think they're being kind to the elephants, but they must be extremely sad, taken away from their family...then being ALONE for 75 years? It is heartbreaking! When you see elephants in a natural unit, they're constantly touching each other, communicating &looking out for each other. They're very social. A lone elephant? My god. They are heartbroken.

This peta dosnt have guts to qustion on killing camel. And cows. Only targeted. Hindu triditions
@Allison Marie Peta kills more animals than they save. They are racket who makes money off of sappy ads that take advantage of peoples love of animals. If I were to tackle the problem of animal cruelty, I would start with their euthanisation of kittens and puppies, not the spoiled elephants in Kerala. These animals are just about domesticated and have been cared for by Hindus for thousands of years. If this were a horse being worshiped, no one would have an issue. Us Westerners need to stop pushing our ethics on the rest of the world.
Camels and cows are domesticated animals. Elephants are wild and endangered animals. Huge difference! Also pls don't drag faith into this. Nobody's targeting Hindu traditions. If so, there would be videos criticising Hindu temples keeping cows as well but there aren't

It is wrong to believe that elephants are well taken care of in Kerala. Elephants are large social animals. The very fact that such huge inteligent animals are kept in isolation and captivity in itself is very cruel. The so called love of elephant is not love but curiosity without responsibilty. It is time to find out for alternative arrangements for festivals, without elepfants. Let them live in herd in protected firests. Then only we can say we love elephants.
Yes, that was our culture....
