Thx for showing other toilets pictures. My son's living in a r.v when I tried to explain what a composting toilet is he said "I'm not s..ting in a bucket"! he didn't want to hear about it. MAYBE I can get him to watch this. Any other sites you can recommend that has pictures? Thx again for your time and effort.

Thanks so much for the videos! Quick question: After five years do you basically use the same system? I am researching doing this on my homestead but it appears that there is some disagreement on the literature as to whether you should separate urine from feces when composting. Some argue that it is dangerous to combine them and it slows down the composting process, while other sources say it's better to combine them because the urine helps it compost at a higher temperature. Thanks in advance for any advice that you can offer!

My oldest and his wife moved to Cape Breton a few years ago and their water supply was a spring up a hill gravity fed into a tank then pumped to the house. Well with 5 kids they ran out of water their first winter. Disconnecting the toilet and replacing it with a composter, just like yours, no more water problems. They started with sawdust and I was amazed at how well it worked. No smell either! Amazing. They've now changed to dried leaves despite the fact that Will has his own sawmill. They love it.

I should add more description as to why we use 90 buckets. We are currently living in town and transitioning to an offgrid property. We are in Northern Maine, so emptying buckets is not really possible with 5 feet of snow on the ground. :)
Sawdust toilets are great. We will never go back to flush toilets. Great video!

Thanks for sharing... I love my composting toilet. Been using one for 2 years now. Thanks for teaching us how to use a composting toilet. So much cleaner. Saves on using water as well. We have a place over at my grandparents that is almost total off grid and makes a difference not having to use water to flush anymore. We don't have running water there and when we go I always bring gallons over for our drinking and cooking. Working on our water catchment systems there so hope to have that going soon. Trying to get 2 places going it a chore for sure. But loving every minute making both places as off grid as we can. Again Thanks for sharing.

So from someone who has a septic tank and ZERO experience with anything else except outside and outhouses my questions are: If someone is sick (no medication) do you compost it? If so does the compost get hot enough to kill any bacteria etc.? Lastly if so do use that in your edible gardens or just flowers and stuff? Great follow up information along with the video that Doug did.

    • @TheTamrock2007

They have a book or two about this, but you can really heat up the compost pile. “The humanure handbook” is a good source, if opinionated. He goes into great detail about proving that he could get his compost hot enough, and his simple methods have worked for me too. It’s not hard, but the technique of getting a good “cook” is in the compost pile.

If you live in the desert I bet it can dry up and burn in a burn barrel really easily. If you live in Florida I would isolate that stuff and pour a bleach solution all over it! Bleach is awesome. Kills all kinds of germs.

I watched all the $$$ put into the Reinvent the Toilet challenge, all aimed at creating a product to sell to those in need of better sanitation. The author of the Humanure Handbook approached that project, and was not considered. Not much profit to be made on on the composting toilet with a bucket approach, it is good for the environment, and can be adopted by almost anyone for very little dollar investment.

It makes sense to learn the prep details for the pile from the Jenkin's Humanure Handbook too! Of course not to build where water runs or near the well etc! A nice thick layer of hay and leaves to separate the first buckets from actually laying on the soil is important. For humanure newbies a cute sign saying "Please cover any Puddles, Paper or Pooh!" Thx!

I was thinking the odor might leach into the plastic like kitty litter boxes tend to do, so I would use a stainless steel pail for the permanent bucket and just toss the waste in the compost pile each time it becomes full. I’m amazed it doesn’t have bad odor since you don’t separate the urine, which is what I didn’t like about the other methods. They claim you have to separate, which would be a huge bother.

  • @feltingme
    @feltingme 5 лет назад +1

Thank you, very informative. I also saw people using larger buckets with holes drilled on the sides, so earthworms can enter, when buckets are put outside. Then they simply let them sit for a year or so until worms make it into nice compost. It is a bit less work, no need to mix it. However one needs lots of buckets and higher seat built.

I actually do mine inside the city limits! Felt like the police or ordinance checkers were going to show up the first couple of years! lol Now it so routine... I started the year we had a heart breaking drought and I wanted to water my garden w/o the guilt so I thought I would use what was a similar amount that is wasted on flushing! Once I saw how easy and no flushing or spray of microbes, no scents if done right, I could never go back.

lf you can build this feature in as aging and dragging the heavy buckets (at least 60lbs!) isn't the easiest and through the house (yuck). I will be building a drawer behind the bathroom buckets in our new place to off load them straight into the great outdoors , for me that will cut off at least 50 ft of carrying them from the Master Bath!

Hi Stacey, my wife and I watch you and Doug and really enjoy your videos. In this video and others I noticed a fan on top of what looks like a firewood stove. Is that fan the type that runs off of the heat of the stove. It probably doesn't use electricity just uses the heat from the stove to run. They're actually referred to as Stirling engine type fans. Some companies that make firewood stoves do sell them. Just curious if that's the type of fan that it is. I love Stirling engines. Someday in the future I plan a building them They are extremely useful, simple, reliable, efficient and quiet. They can also run on sunlight, firewood, alcohol or basically anything that burns and creates heat. Please let me know. Thanks.

If the local High School in your town has a wood shop class, (they have to get rid of the sawdust) get in touch with the teacher of that class and set up a time to get the sawdust. What style/brand bucket would you suggest we use? Not all buckets are created equal (as i am sure you have found out).

Thanks for all the info! We are planning on using this system on our homestead. We will be living in a rural area so ,we are not able to locate saw mills to get the untreated sawdust. We could use pine shavings or cedar bedding from a local tractor supply?
