    Forget the Septic System and water service and go for a composting toilet. It's clean, more sanitary, and you can reuse the waste! Plus having a composting system instead of a septic or sewer based system means you can build your homestead anywhere rather than by a roadside for water line access. Even a septic system needs water to flush the toilet.
    Over all, a composting system like this will save you BIG MONEY! All you need is a bucket.

      I think peat moss is outlawed in some areas.

    I know.
    Its an old vid. Still.
    I remember a documentary done by the BBC. It looked at enzymes that live on in dead wood.
    To show this, a dead chicken was left for one hour on both a wood and plastic chopping board.
    Both chopping boards were left overnight and the level of bacteria was mesaured.
    As you would expect, the bacteria on the plastic board had a violent population explosion. The bacteria on the wood board however had not grown as enzymes in the wood were preventing their growth.
    This is why you get no smell with a composting loo.

    Just short of doing the full humanure set up, (so, yes...a bit less ecological), I have a wonderful bucket system in my semi off grid situation in rural NS. I have a bucket with plastic bag inside with cedar mulch as cover material. (This only needs getting rid of once a week or 2 weeks) I have a urine diverter with vinegar bottles that I empty in the lush foliage around the property. (I have learned from others that a little vinegar left in the bottles is 'key' to keeping urine odors at bay.) I absolutely love the simplicity of this way of 'toileting' and it does NOT smell. (I do keep deodorizers nearby to ensure just in case though)... I'm soon going to purchase a ceramic diverter that is hand painted which should really make the whole bathroom experience such a pleasure! haha. Thank you for the great information in this video!

    • @stephenleaf3848
      @stephenleaf3848 3 года назад

      Using worms do not raise the temps high enough (tho it doesn’t require all that high if kept there for long enough) to destroy any potentially dangerous pathogens. Composting it is best! Safer and gives just as good if not better results than using worms. Using worms for kitchen scraps and such is a good system. But don’t expect acceptable results using them with humanure. Humanure if composed right is safe in your garden. Vermiculture is not safe to use on humanure for the garden.

I've been looking at a lot of dry toilet options because conventional toilets waste so much water. Right now 30% of the country are experiencing drought and 51% are experiencing unusually dry conditions. I'm looking for land to build a homestead but I'd like to do it in a way that's conscious of resources. Anyway, this is great. Thanks for posting.

      @Lynn Roberts Are you kidding? Where I live, we supply much of the water that runs down the Mississippi. Our water is relatively clean, by the time it reaches the Golf of Mexico, what they have is a DEAD ZONE (look it up) caused by a toxic liquid. So unless you have purifier, what come out of you kitchen sink is liquid with chemicals added to not kill you right away. So it's not the liquid that is scarce, it the liquid you can actually consume. We have huge oceans, try drinking the water to see what happens.

    Great build, but may I suggest that you build a funnel into your toilet to separate it out. A funnel with a hose or PVC pipe to a gallon jug, will eliminate any odors you may getting from the urine. It's the urine which is the cause of odor.

    • @fl3082
      @fl3082 2 года назад

      Urine does not create any odor when absorbed into sawdust. Dry sawdust will allow scent to escape. If air can flow, smell can flow. Dampened sawdust acts like a sponge, keeping air and moisture trapped. Urine helps keep the system odor-free.
      If you're eating healthy (drinking healthy) the way you ought to, Udine shouldn't have all that much smell anyways. If you're taking in a gallon of water every day and cut soda and coffee (and McDonald's) out of your diet, your offal isn't as "polluted" (stinky). Same with your sweat.

    I am planning on making several composting privys for a few dwellings I have possession of but I am about to set up my bug out and yep....this is the way I plan on going. Watching about every video available. I need to order several urine diverters, unless I can create something that does the same thing.

    Shower water has to go to septic, at least in missouri.

    Don't forget,if you don't have a septic system or electricity, you likely won't have piped water either; you have to carry in all your water...at least try to put in a well; water is everything!

    I’ve lived with this system before in Africa where we didn’t have an option and yes it does work very well but in my opinion it’s absolutely NOT worth it. The upfront cost of your septic tank over the life of the system is something like 30 cents a day. Getting it pumped every 5 or 10 years ads another 5 or 10 cents per day and the water you use, especially if you are on a well is way cheaper than hay and wood chips. And that’s not even getting into the resale value of your house or the psychological damage to your kids when their friends come over and ask to use the bathroom. It may only take you 5 minutes a day but even if you are on minimum wages you would be better off just staying at work 5 minutes longer. If you are worried about loosing the benefits of the compost just graze livestock over the drain field or grow shallow root crops. Everything grows better over a leach field.

      @Anamericanhomestead  2 года назад

      psychological damage? Puh Leeze! You're kids must be fragile. And what happens when your tank can't be serviced anymore? If it gets filled and nobody comes out to empty it, your toilets are finished. People have forgotten the meaning of the words "self reliance".

      Sorry you were offended that I didn’t agree with you completely. Remember I’ve lived with this system and I did agree that it does work. My family and I would use this system if there was no alternative. I would also consider it for a camper or weekend cabin but if you really do the math and consider the value of your time it’s hard to make it make any economical sense. If you want to do it as a hobby or to save the planet that’s fine but don’t fool yourself that you are saving any money. The only argument you made agains my statement other than to insult my kids, (the three oldest of which are currently serving in the US military and are quite confident and well adjusted despite growing up with indoor plumbing). Was your statement that I wouldn’t be able to get my system pumped after a grid down scenario. I’ve thought about that. My system gets pumped every 10 years but has never needed pumping, it was still working fine but was pumped as preventative maintenance. In a grid down scenario I could baby the system, stop flushing paper and reduce soap and grease getting to the tank. Doing so I could probably make the system last longer than me. If it did go bad my first option would be to empty the tank out with a bucket and rope. Not a pleasant prospect but not impossible. I’ve done it before. If that fails I could at that time set up composting toilet or come up with some similar option. I have plenty of buckets lying around. I applaud you sharing this information and knowing how to set this up could be very important to a lot of people in a long term shtf scenario but for me, right now I’m going to stick with my flushing toilet.

    I will suggest again your growing worms. You can go big or have a small set up of 10,000 worms. They eat almost everything, are self replacing and they leave castings behind that have several supercharging effects on any plant you wish to use on. My tomatoes have never been bigger and tastier and making worm casting tea can even be used indoors where half of my plants are.

    Did he say if you need electric installation you should have a septic tank installed first? In that case, if you don't need electricity installed (but using a solar system of electricity or without) then you are allowed to live there with no septic at all, but make compost from your popoo?

    I gathered that you can do without the septic system in very rural areas. Doesn’t the county or the local code make you have a septic? I can remember there was one lady in Florida who had composting toilet operation in her home and the local government forced her to change. Gone even to taken possession of her home for violating the code.

    The bathroom at my parents (where I rent a space, but have to share bathroom) is filthy because that's how the family is (except me). I can't stand it. I have to clean the toilet seat every time I use it. They really are filthy people. The house doesn't get cleaned. They leave dirty dishes in sink and on counter, in there rooms for too long before they go in dish washer. I have one of each items (plate, bowl, big spoon, small spoon. OK, more than one mug for different drinks I have going at same time, like coffee and water). I wash my dishes/utensils when I'm done eating, unlike the family (parents, nephew, nieces). Big house, multiple rooms, so of course multiple family member in same house. Even my sister and her husband also rent half of basement as apartment and as filthy as the others. I swear I'm not really related (switched at birth). I'm the only one clean and neat. This house is full of junk everywhere, except my room (the smallest room and hottest in Summer). If I could move to a place of my own, I would. But health issues and on welfare where I'm at and cost for rent or buying home/land makes that a problem for me. So I'm stuck here unless I just grab what I can carry, head deep into the woods and attempt to live out there. Wouldn't last long with my health problem. But hey, at least I'd die in a better place than this horrible house with people who are filthy, fill the place with junk and don't have much respect.
