So good! I love Popol Vuh. And for folks experimenting with old prog rock from this era, I also recommend Tangerine Dream.

I run into this cd in late 90's. It caught my eye because of the name of the artist. Being a Mayan myself from Guatemala I recognized the name of popol vuh as the book about my people. I still keep this cd and still sounds fresh in 2021. I keep this in the same playlist with artists like Rüfüs Du Sol, dinka and many more.

I was on tour in Germany in the 70’s and a friend turned me on to popul vuh I loved them from the start . Florian was way ahead of everyone except maybe John Lennon the vocalist brings to mind Yoko...

🍍Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past

I can´t believe that this sound is nearly 25 years old....
Today they would be one of the very best psytrance bands, together with Spongle, Ott, Bluetech and Suduaya etc., playing on the big international stages like Ozora / Goa or Psy-fi Festival etc. - they were so incredible advanced to their time, same like Kraftwerk, Wiese, Schulze and Tangerine Dream and later Brian Eno, Kitaro or Deep Forest!

Herzog said Popol Vuh went on to make more common (folksy as he described it) music, which he had less of a taste for - I do like this, but it does indeed sound much more contrived or derivative than say, Agape Agape, I know Popol Vuh had multiple styles over the years - and this is not to call this a degradation of style - but certainly, their older stuff has a quality as unnamable as the Gnossiennes of Satie - summing it up to existential or whatever is shallow thinking - Popol Vuh achieved creations which I often consider “music that had to be made” - Florian composed songs which not only are uniquely perfect- but evoke nuance within familiar emotions, memory of a time you did not exist, palpability with the Earth under our feet and it’s history-reattached to our spirit (again, beyond existential) a feeling they conveyed too well, I think we’re always subject to distortions to the point we are almost always alone..
The world reflects itself back to us, we can only really see ourselves- all our sensitivities and insecurities and experiences, area’s of awareness and lack of- all these unconscious processes collide at each instant to try to form the most understandable and useful idea about what the outside world is to us - what we see is catered to us - truth often bends to bias, we receive our own idea of someone else conveying a thought or feeling subject to our ever changing and complex way to understand - just as we project ourselves outward to see the world, we too do it to see others- in turn we only see ourselves reflected through others and vice versa...seeing people through the reactions they cause in you..
Despite the nature of this - we have an ability- almost magically, we can leave our worlds, into transient spaces that form between people, and in these places our feelings of loneliness for example temporarily fade away, we feel connected to another person
Popol Vuh often bridged the gap of understanding, alike the greatest of art works - what they felt and meant to convey is what is picked up - it didn’t need interpreting, “why do I still sleep” for example is a song which (considering I learn say Ravel by ear) which wholly reaches inside, but does not impose a feeling, but converses with the one we already had inside.

Most old school PV fans hate this apparently. I got the Sing for it drives the wolves away when it came out.
This is one of my fave albums by them!

    • @atlasking6110

yeah we hate it because it sucks and it has nothing to do with Popol Vuh other than Florian choosing a poor custodian- Fraudo Hi-hideous to carry on his name.

In fairness, this is where Florian was at in the ‘90s; perhaps the muse had dried up and he was willing to hand the mantle to someone else by this time. Unfortunately, the ‘Guido Anonymous Years’ are the least creative of the band’s existence yet still apparently has some fans. The last album sans Guido ,’Messa di Orfeo’ is a slight return to form.

This recording is far from the original POPOL VUH. The use of electronics here is bland and superficial. Most of their stuff before this was really different and interesting, until "For You and Me" 1991.

Well, there was the Norwegian Popul Vuh... and the German Popul Vuh
Florian Fricke, Frank Fiedler, and Daniel Fichelscher are in the sleeve credits, so this must be the German one.
Personally, I wish they'd made far more like their first two... but they developed and changed.

Really, how arrogant, so Popol Vuh made an album you didn't like because it didn't meet YOUR narrow expectations. I also much prefer their acoustic, pastoral sound. But as mickey pointed out they radically changed direction after their first 2 albums, I suppose that wasn't Popol Vuh either

this is Florian Fricke Popol Vuh official release for US label Milan, recorded in 1994. Different style than expected but its in spirit of 90s exploring new studio technologies, and that is OK.
