Maybe that’s why we have a natural instinct to save our finest objects to display or use for Christmas. People get dressed up, cook their best food, and use their most extravagant decorations on holidays. You lose the sacred when you indulge in luxury everyday though
beauty is expensive but so worth it, last year I committed, that everything I have to buy is beautiful and my life is so much better, all beautiful things remind me of heaven, and the angels
You ignore Jesus' teaching that true worshipers worship (proskeneo) in spirit and truth, not in a particular place. We are the God's temple, not a building like the OT. Get Biblical please.
Austerity is beautiful too. I live near a Cister monastery in Alcobaça Portugal. What I love about orthodoxy and icons is the orare and labore to the max. Prayer in the form of labor. Austerity is Jesus in the desert, or St Anthony of the desert.
America has managed to build St Patrick’s cathedral and the Washington national cathedral. But in the Middle Ages even small cities built such places all over Europe
As a protestant , and slowly becoming a mystic, I'm starting to understand icons and beautiful churches. I walk into European cathedrals and almost weep with awe. When I leave a protestant shopping center type church I almost weep with relief that I'm leaving the building. The only thing that keeps me centered is understanding Christ in others, and an open mindfulness. Maybe the USA is too gnostic? A "material world is bad" kind of thinking that gets us confused? Why not spend cash on a beautiful church rather than a Trump tower? One will endure while the other will go the way of Babel. Any material that elevates Christ, the Logos, is fine by me. Thank you for convo. It made me reflect.
Even indigenous people use their best clothes for their holidays. It is an ancient customs that is glorious when it is to elevate what is holy. I’ve entered Protestan churches and I feel nothing. I’ve been to Europe and you feel the beauty and you feel connected and the glory of God.
I think our culture's allergy to beautiful churches is a symptom of our underlying spiritual malady of hedonistic gnosticism -- the idea that material things are meaningless, so there's no harm in giving our whim free rein in the material realm. Hedonistic gnosticism among the masses tends to provoke ascetic gnosticism among the "superior" types, resulting in those with the resources to build churches looking down their noses at beauty as something inferior that only the proles care about. And, of course, without proper models of beauty, the sense of taste among the masses devolves into tackiness and shallowness, with the end result being a world devoid of material signs of substance and permanence.
"The most terrible thing is that it may well be that the guardians of beauty, those who study and understand the world's beauty, will not comprehend Christ's beauty, and will not let him into the church because behind him there will follow a crowd of people deformed by sin, by ugliness, drunkenness, depravity and hate. Then their chant will fade away in the air, the smell of incense will disperse, and Someone will say to them: 'I was hungry, and you gave me no food'." - Saint Maria Skobtsova
Our Identity is unmanifest, Absolute, Impersonal Consciousness. But while we can´t find our Identity in the world, the Manifest is precisely the realm of expression, the place created for expressing beauty. That´s its value. So a society with a sole interest in practicity with a disregard for expressing beauty in every social and artistic manifestation is a society that has misunderstood the right hierarchy of things.
Tom Wadsworth is prominent on RUclips arguing from Scripture that house churches were the norm. Jesus is the new temple and Christians are God's house according to Scripture.
Archaeologists have dug up "house churches" that actually have a particular form to them. IE, people hosting a church in their house would renovate their house to provide a dedicated worship space. These people weren't sitting in the living room in their sweatpants while drinking coffee and having a Bible study. The modern concept of "house church" has no analogue in the early Church.
Great video. There is an awful tendency to view corruptible goods as inherently bad. Thus making our sin the lens in which we experience the world. Very backwards.
Seems like the Gospel is pretty unclear on this, it says "sell everything you have and give it to the poor" but that can be interpreted as "put on royal robes and sit on a diamond encrusted golden throne with rings on every finger ". I'm sure Jesus will clarify that on judgement day.
Have you done that yourself or it applies only to others? And where exactly is this vulgarity you are describing coming from?Could it be that you want to sell the expensive oil and give the money to the poor instead of wasting it on Christ?
I suppose, but that’s more to do with intense compartmentalization. They still think it’s majestic and beautiful but they ascribe it to “human progress” or something.
If anyone needs a real life example of cognitive dissonance watch this video. This guy makes money off extravagant beauty in chruches. He's an artist that sells his work to churches. Constantine used basilicas to conduct Christian worship. That was the start of extravagant wasteful buildings used for christian worship. They make fun of Nero but Constantine did some of the same stuff.
I don't quite agree with you. Jesus even received the most expensive oil from his female follower, He even rebuked Judas when Judas suggested that He should let Judas sell the oil and give the money to the poor. Even the temple was built in a majestic way. That's not a sin, but hypocrisy is the sin.
The purpose of being human it to be an image bearer of God. This means to participate in the divine beauty of God and to help bring this beauty into the world. What better way to do this than to make your church beautiful in an act of reverence and worship to God?

focusing on extravagant beauty to glorify God again may help to get some men back in the church.

I have a question: Why are the Orthodox still stuck with 2D looking paintings in their Cathedrals?
This is intentional. The style represents a window into the spiritual world.
Is your brother orthodox? He never talks about his faith
As a Roman Catholic, I agree 100%.
Oblig. "Submit to Rome" 😁
Faith inspires beauty, but, surprisingly, beauty does not inspire faith: look at the churches of Europe, empty despite their magnificence.

Look at modern art and architecture. People get upset and complain that beauty can exist anywhere in this day and age.
