The unelected (at least directly) Metro Board is an unwieldy mess. 40 voting members. Large listed private companies have between 8-12 directors. Smaller companies 4-6 directors. With 40 directors on the Metro Board, decision-making of any value is almost impossible. The provincial government likes this model because it allows Victoria to pass along tough decisions about region-wide services to Metro. The current governance model needs major reform. Reform is unlikely to come from within because the financial remuneration is so generous to council members and mayors who serve on the board and are paid extra -- and quite handsomely. How much does Metro Board service pay. Kirk LaPointe in the NSN points to the total remuneration of a number of Metro Board members. The figures he quotes are combined salaries, Metro payments and other remuneration: "Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley pulled in $393,075, Delta Mayor George Harvie took in $346,780, Port Coquitlam’s Brad West received $342,512; and Richmond’s Malcolm Brodie brought in $331,959. As others point out, this is more than the premier or his cabinet, and fuels frustration and a perceived gap between earnings and outcomes." It's safe to say that at least some of Metro Board's members would never enjoy these levels of salary and benefits in any other line of work for which they might qualify.
Thanks .the board is also responsible and should be held accountable.the get paid to look after this

Thanks for taking the time and making us all aware!
You bet!
We have to start paying for it this year...and still do dumping RAW SEWAGE into the harbour... completely ridiculous.
This is the most egregious case of incompetence and mismanagement in Metro Van/Lower Mainland history.
