I liked your point regarding device overlap (task separation); first time I hear this, and it really makes sense in the current Apple ecosystem. Also, thanks for speaking about relative portability as I'm sure a 16" remains quite portable 'cause both need a bag or backpack during transit anyway!
I recently traveled and, even though I knew what would happen, I tried to open on a plane. Impossible to work on a plane with this laptop. I have a 12.9” iPad for this but it was comical trying to open while sitting in a coach class seat! I still kept my 16”. Also, I had a 16gb 16” with 1tb and returned that for 16” with 32gb and 2 TB. Performance went up close to 20% on cpu related processing.
Hey, I know its a late comment already but I hope you will still read this and answer. First of all I wanted to ask how is the laptop performing now? I am thinking of moving from 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro to M2 Pro 16 inch MacBook Pro. I am an architecture student using 3D rendering softwares and Vectorworks for my projects. Do you think the performance would be sufficient. Second I hear that you were trying Archicad. Although it is a good software, I recommend you try Vectorworks since I consider it to be an easier software to learn as well as it runs smoother in Mac OS.
Hi Jon, how is Archicad 23 working on your side? My M1 Macbook Pro keeps on showing bug reports and sometimes can’t save the files. Let me know your experience as I’m waiting for my 14 inch M1 Pro spec out 10 core. Thanks and more power to your channel
Thanks Jon for your response, I have my M1 Pro 14 inch Macbook Pro with me and had it installed already. I still encounter the bug report when closing the app (Archicad) but haven’t experience the previous trouble saving files. By the way all of your reviews are on point and detailed like how Architects work on their projects! Looking forward on your next content 🙏🏻 🇵🇭
Great video!!! A follow up full review with compatibility and performance in fellow architecture software like Rhino+ Grashopper & Twinmotion could really be helpul. Looking Forward.
Great view! I have been agonising over this for about two weeks now, and funny enough, I had the exact same reasons as you in the end to go with the 16 inch. I am a student, and I can use my iPad 11 inch for Lectures and stuff, where I just need to take notes and really need portability, but for "real" work, and especially since I don't use an external monitor, I love having the bigger screen. To me, it also feels more comfortable to type on the 16 inch, since you have so much space to rest your palms.
Same situation here. I'm a medical student deciding between the 14" and 16" sizes for school (a little overkill but I plan to keep this thing for a lot longer than I had my 2016 13" MBP). My 11" iPad Pro with the magic keyboard attachment felt a little too close to the 14 inch MBP. Got both sizes, going to return the 14 and keep the 16, and I really like the separation between the iPad and the larger MacBook. Like Jon, I felt there was a little too much overlap between the iPad and the 14 inch in terms of screen size. If I need to do super portable work in tight spaces (small coffee shop/airplane) then I have the iPad. The weight/portability difference between the two is pretty nonexistent for me, as I can't really feel the difference in weight in my bag since there are other things in there anyways, and both laptops fit fine in my bag's laptop pocket. Otherwise, the 16" screen is a lot nicer to do work on, and it feels like a desktop away from home when I set it up on a table with the iPad to the side.
Hi Jon! Greate video and greate channel, i already subscribed! I works with Archicad for many years and few days ago i ordered macbook air with m1 and 16 gb ram. Is Archicad works well with m1 at all? I am interesting in drawings and 3d-Modeling, for rendering i have powerfull PC with Nvidia.
Great review! You came to the exact same conclusion as I did. I canceled my 14in on order for a 16in for the same reasons as you state. The 14in is great, but the 16in is just better in several ways, while the portability is still great. As you said, many reviewers make it look like the difference in size and heft between the the two form factors are humongous.
Exactly! I think what most people mean is "The 16" is less comfortable and heavy to carry with one hand.." Because carrying it in a backpack, 2 hands, etc. it's really not that bad. I wish I included that in the video^ LOL.
Amazing video, i agree with what you said, I ordered my 16” today. I do music, but im just curious about what camera and lens do you use? The graphics looks amazing as well
I really like this video especially as an architecture student who currently has a 2019 MacBook Pro 16” that’s been overheating and having issues with working with adobe apps, AutoCad, and SketchUp. I’m planning on getting the 2021 MacBook Pro 16” with the M1 Max chip, 10 core CPU, 32 core GPU, 16 core neural engine, 32g ram, and 512g. I’m in my second year of architecture and I still have 400g of my 512 ssd so I don’t think I need 1T plus I can always buy an external drive. It will be worth it!! 🙌🏾 One thing though, if you’re keeping this device for a while, 1TB might be the way to go. BUT if you’re convinced with 512gb, that’s good too.
I hear you, as far as for myself I would still go with the 14" as I mostly work with external monitors at home or at the office. My field is cinematography and I can't see myself doing client work on a laptop screen (not for the quality, but as you mentioned, the real estate).
Hi, great video!! Do you recommend 32 GB RAM or maybe the 64 GB RAM? I am a full time Premiere Pro editor and I want to have a macbook as fast as possible. But a lot of people tells me that I dont need the 64 GB RAM...
Thank you! I do my own color grading. No luts or anything. The funny thing is this particular video, I switched to final cut and still working on creating “the look” I want. This looks fine but not completely what I want. 😁
I’m an incoming freshman of Architecture and a part time Apple retail employee. I know that most architects and architecture students alike choose windows because all the software runs natively on windows but I’m a Mac user for life and was wondering what configuration you would recommend? I was thinking of buying a 14” MacBook Pro M1 Max with 64GB of ram, but can’t decide on 24 or 32 core GPU. Any thoughts?
Jon Imperial: would you happen to know if the gains from M1 Max for video editing and architeture are worth it over M1 Pro as far as performance per dollar and battery life?
Ok, this video was really useful. I was wondering if the software was able to work and perform well on the Macbooks because I know that primarily Windows is used and the archtecture software is usually optimized for Windows. Thanks so much for the insight.
I am a content writer and video editor looking to branch my skills out into graphic design - what resources would you recommend in learning (even if it's just the basics to get started) design skills?
Interesting insight! Where you find an issue with device overlap, I find an opportunity to almost double the screen real estate in a very portable EDC for my MacBook 14 max + IPad when it comes to video editing and motion graphics.
I can see your point. Good for you that it works. I don’t really see it as an issue but it’s nice to necessarily know which device to use for a specific task. I can use the 16”+11” ipad combo too (I can have 2 windows on mbp + 1 on ipad). Whereas, the 14” screen is not ideal for multi-tasking (1 window on mbp + 1 on iPad)… FOR MY USE.
Hi, what spec to choose for architecture, mainly im engineering in AutoCad, and in the evening im playing World of Warcraft. Wich spec should be fine for me? Im not rendering that much. I spend more time modeling and drawing.
What can you recommend? I have on order now 16" m1 pro (32 ram) and 14" m1 max (24 core). I do color grading in davinci resolve and these extra GPU cores will give 15-20% more fps in playback

@@JonImperial should I keep my intel MacBook Pro 16” too since I have heard that revit and lumion aren’t compatible with the M1 chip yet?

That’s fair! I present sometimes with clients outside of my office and the bigger screen helps with that too!
Hi bro do you recommend it for architecture student ?
The only concern would be program compatibility. Check the programs you’re using and make sure they work well with parallels.
Jon, I'm wondering how well is AutoCAD running on Macbook now, since Autodesk released the native support😉😉
It’s working well! I have no issues with it.
