This is AMAZING!!! Thank you so much Heather! This so helpful. Btw I’m writing the comment before watching the video. I think you can see how confident I am about the information in your videos
Wonderful Heather! By the end of doing this epub project along with you, I started playing around with HTML... added different styles for different pictures and did a lot of other fun stuff. 😄
@@HeatherCashArt As of now I am stuck with ER24010 and ER24001 while running on the previewer. I attempted to add speech bubbles where necessary. I did not come across any sigil tutorials where I can learn how to add text boxes. so I simply formatted my JPEG to get my desired result. I hope it works at the user end.
OMG! And I thought formatting a layout was difficult…. I think I’ll need to watch this several times to get my head around all this info, I already had a headache from trying to reformat a print book, but after watching this…. maybe I’ll just stick with KDP😋
Ha ha! I know, that is why when you try to look up how to create an epub for a children's book, it usually will just say to have an expert do it 😝 BUT, it is a lot simpler if you download my template. You don't have to do anything with the table of contents and you don't have to deal with adding the custom CSS. AND it comes with a step by step PDF that walks you through the process!
😋 thanks for your reply. I will check out your template and have a relaxing ‘beverage’ 😜whilst doing so. Many thanks and keep up the excellent tutorials, I’m really enjoying them…. even if I don’t fully understand the content 😋
Thank you so much for this video! It was perfect; it took me some trial and error because my pictures were too big, so they just weren't showing up when I tried to open the epub, but once I reduced them it went through!
This is an amazing tutorial!! I am using it every time I want to create an epub file. Thank you very much for your work! Btw could you make a similar tutorial for using Scribus, too? I am sure I could follow your explanation how to use it.
Hi! Thanks so much, I'm so glad you like my video! What are you aiming to do in Scribus / what is your end goal (so I know how to structure the tutorial)?
@@HeatherCashArt I would like to publish a picture book. Currently, I am using Canva, but IngramSpark always complains about some "transfer curves" in the pdf I downloaded from Canva. I tried to use Scribus, but Scribus is very complex. There are good tutorials for formatting novels, but I have not found any useful material for picture books with bleeds yet. It would be a lifesaver if you could make a tutorial using the same book as in the Sigil video as an example. Thank you for your videos, they help me a lot!
@bcs-xq9hm oh, well the only thing you need to do to fix that curves error is to save your PDF as a PDF-X. I use Adobe Acrobat to do that. I have a tutorial on it! This will fix it: ruclips.net/video/bGzJ7_Vj9Is/видео.html
@@HeatherCashArt I checked out your Adobe Acrobat tutorial; thank you! I do not have a subscription, but I will use a trial to solve this problem for now. However, it would be great if you could make a Scribus tutorial video anyway. I believe Scribus can also save files as PDF-X, and I have found very positive reviews of this software on the Internet. Thank you! Bori
Hi Heather this is a great video! Thank you! Where can I find the video to learn to adjust the fonts and do more fancy stuff? Or do you have a link to an other good video online ? (for dummies)… xx kind greetings Kim
Ooh, you're the first person who has asked that! I could definitely make a video on it! I doubt there is anything for epubs specifically, but you would just need to do some CSS. Email me at heather@heathercash.com and I can try a quick explanation for you for now, but I will also add it to my video schedule!
I found how to add the links so no need for that anymore but I do have a problem with my images. They show up as the filename with a small icon next to it. If I save the document it showes a ? in a square in apple Books. I used jpg, and png. It gives a very long code in Sigil like this :
For people doing this on an iPad like I am. Do split screen between files and your pages application. You can then drag and drop one by one. Make sure that each page of your book is sized to the same size as each page in the pages application. And add one page of your book to every page in your pages application. Then you can click export and you can then go to export as EPUB.
@@HeatherCashArt no I use the "pages" application that comes with the iPad. I had to update the application when I first opened it because it was the older version. But once I did I went to the little yellow icon with the pain in it called "pages". Once you open it then you can tap "+". At the top then tap "books" tab then tap "blank book portrait". The arrow that points down in the top left where it says blank book portrait. Then tap "document options". Then "document setup". I turned off the headers and footers and document body. Then tap "custom size" and insert the original size for the paperback without bleed and the lock then tap outside the box for it to resize to that size.
2. There might be another way to get the specific size of the paperback book but I'm not sure. You can also hit the "done" on your keyboard to keep that size in case just tapping out of the box doesn't work. Once the document in "pages" is set to the size of the paperback then you know when you insert the jpegs that were made for that size they won't have quality reduction. I also like to go down to "more options" in the document setup and get the orange arrows as close to the edge of the paper as I can. Now the document is all set up to import your jpegs from the paperback. Tap the top three dots and select "split view" and open "files" the blue manilla envelope.
3. Now that your files and Pages applications are split and they're both open starting from the first page drag and drop your first jpeg page from your paperback. You can stretch this to meet all the corners on the "pages" document without any distortion. Because the document is set for the same size as your paperback was. So you should have the same quality as your paperback book by stretching it to the document size. It does have snap to center with a skinny yellow line across the middle both ways so you can center the page properly. You can then scroll down and you'll find another white page. Where you can do the exact same to the next page. Continue to drag and drop and stretch each page throughout the entire document until you've uploaded your entire document. The top should be page one and the bottom should be the last page.
Thanks Heather! This is so helpful! Unfortunately, I'm trying to follow along with the steps in your video and have run into a problem where after I add the image in PageEdit, I just see a broken image and can't actually preview the image properly. Maybe you can help? I believe I followed all steps exactly as described in your video.
Hi Heather, just curious.. could you not create the .mobi file in kindle kids creator, get the mobi file and then use a software to convert it mobi to EPUB??
Heather, my images are in the image folder. But, after I add an image in PageEdit (yes they are visible), the image does not open on my screen and has a broken icon. (broken image icon here) Backyard Kids Cover 6.13x9.25 in-image How are these images not linked?

It's just saying that it doesn't recognize it, but if you know the program is from a trusted source (which it is) then you can override that. Just don't install programs from shady websites. Only legit ones.
I'm by no means an expert, but I guess something to consider is that not all devices for reading ebooks are good for viewing videos. All tablets should be fine but not all e-ink type readers. This might be ok, but it's something to take into consideration.
