Thanks so much for watching! I hope you found this video on how to create an ebook for our children's books helpful. Be sure to find me over on Instagram & TikTok, so we can connect there as well!
When I put the mobi format into Calibre and then convert it to EPUB it seems to only show the cover... Is there a way to check that the Mobi file from KDP properly downloaded it all? @EeviJones
Eevi, thank you so much for taking your precious time to make such informative videos for us children's book authors! You're the best!!
Thank you so much. You're the kindest!
This information was very helpful. You are our self-publishing cheerleader. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Hope!
I can't thank you enough for walking us through the Kindle Create ebook process step by step. You've helped build my confidence with your positive affirmations. ❤
I'm so, so happy to hear this!
Thank you for another helpful video. Every time I watch your videos, I learn so much. You make sure to cover all aspects.
That's so, so exciting for me to hear, Jen!!!! Thank you so much!
Thanks Eevi for all the great videos you put up and for responding to people when you can in the comments.
That's so sweet of you to say! Thank you so much!
Your information is so helpful! I am consuming all of it and your book has also been a big help for me.
That's so wonderful to hear! And I love that my book has been helpful as well!
Love your videos, Eevi! Couldn't have published my book without all your advice. The one thing I think is important to communicate about using KKBC over KC, a disadvantage actually, is that the pages will not rotate on the Kindle app so it will remain fixed in landscape mode on a vertical screen instead of rotating to a proper landscape view when the phone is held horizontally, which in my mind is a big enough reason not to use KKBC nowadays. Another advantage of using KC over KKBC is that the "Read Sample" will appear beautifully fitted and allow scrolling. I found that when I first published the book using KKBC, the double page layout would actually show 2 pages side by side, making it too small to read the text. If one doesn't have to add text, it seems like KC is the clear winner between the two softwares.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. If we want to be able to view our book horizontally, it's important to select the "landscape" option during our ebook creation (minute marker 7:09 in the video). And instead of choosing the "two images side-by-side," we will want to make sure to select "one image at a time" and then upload our double spreads. That way, we can view our left and right side (double spread) in one image horizontally.
@@EeviJones Hi Eevi, I did choose "landscape" and "one image at a time" - and it appears on the Kindle device as it should. But I still found that on the Kindle app for the phone, the double spread page will appear in landscape while the phone is held up vertically and will not rotate even if you rotate your phone to horizontal. So, you can image how small the page would be - just the width of your phone. I've tested it with other children's ebooks and found the same result for 80% of them. After researching KDP forums, I read that this is caused by using KKBC, which is outdated. Only when I republished the book using KC, the pages did rotate as they should depending on how I held the phone. So, for me at least, I chose the correct settings and still encountered this issue while using KKBC.
Thank you so much for sharing this information. Your videos are so incredibly helpful! 😊
Hearing this makes me so happy! Thanks so much for your kind words!
Thanks Eevie you have been so very helpful along the way!
Thank you so much! That is so, so wonderful to hear!
thank you. This gave me the confidence to do it
Ohhh Janelle! Hearing this makes me so happy! You've got this!
Again, YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!
And you are the sweetest, Suzanne! Thank you so much for your kind words! I truly appreciate you taking the time to spread your kindness!
You are actually phenomenal
You're so sweet! Thank you so much for your kind words! I so appreciate you!
@@EeviJones You are most welcome
Hi, @Eevi Jones, I have a doubt, I wish to know what are the recommended page dimensions for uploading the way you explain here. For instance, landscape orientation, single-paged. Because not al tablet devices are the same size... thank you for this Tut!
Happy Monday! Because there are so many different e-book reading devices, there is no ONE specific dimension for e-readers. So I'm simply using the same images I am using for my print versions. I hope this helps!
What pixel setting should I download the jpg images for ebook? I save my images at 300 dpi and when I read it on my kindle, it is a little bit slow whenever I scroll through the book.
Thank you very much. Very useful
That is so, so wonderful to hear, Monica!
Can I ask you if it's ok that my kpf file weight 100mb? Thank you 🙏
After following your videos and using your tools, I finally had my book go live on KDP. Thanks for all your insight and help. I have one question on the ebook about formatting the cover. On the one that just went live I used the spread like you suggested but it looks funny on the live site. I have a boarder on the paperback cover so on the spread it goes all the way across the spread and KDP is showing the whole spread on the order site and the print is much smaller. Do I have to use a spread (like the other pages) or can I load the cover from my paperback?
You are so very welcome! And congratulations on your newly published book! When setting up our ebook, we won't be using the spread as its cover. Instead, we will simply use the front cover part for our ebook cover (the way we would want it to be displayed). I so hope this helps!
Eevi, Great video! I've never written an e-book, and this was very helpful. What software do you use for generating the jpg files? Do you have a recommended height and width resolution for the jpgs? Have you done any audio book videos?
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found this helpful. I personally use a program called Sketchbook, but any software will do. I always have my illustrations created at 300 DPI, that way, they are perfect for printing as well. As to your heights / width question, this would depend on multiple things; for example, whether or not you also wish to use those illustrations for a paperback version of your book. This video will help you select the best size for you and your book: ruclips.net/video/NJaoq9EJ6hs/видео.html - I so hope this helps!
Hello! I wanted to thank you so much for your clear and right to the point videos! Very easy to follow :) I just was wondering where you keep your images? They are all nice in order and easy to see. So when you went to get your images, what software did you use to arrange them like that? Thanks!
Hi Gina! You're so very welcome! It's all in the naming of each of your files! I always make sure to save all my pages/ images in numerical/ alphabetical order. I so hope this helps!
Hi Eevi! This is AWESOME news! How do you "cut" the landscape eBook in half using Canva for the paperback? Do you have a video that shows how? Thanks!
Hi Anita! We can simply use the crop feature within Canva. Or if you are using my Plug 'n Go Templates, simply drag your image into the correct size within the template, and move it to the left or right, depending on what page you are creating.
Hi Eevi! I went back to look at the version of Plug N Go Templates that I have. It seems to be for paperback books with no version for a landscape eBook. I worked for hours on Canva trying to figure out how to crop the landscape image to no avail. Is there another Plug n Go template that I can use to crop my landscape full-bleed illustration? If so, please send me the link. I will gladly purchase it. Thank you. I appreciate your help so much.
Hi Anita, could you clarify a bit more what it is you are trying to do? If you have double spread images and are trying to format them for your ebook, you won't need to change their sizes (as long as you are planning to use the double spread display for your ebook). If you are trying to crop your double spread images in order to format your paperback, please make sure to watch the step-by-step videos that come with my Plug & Go templates. I so hope this helps!
Your series has been super helpful, thanks to you I'm ordering the first proofs of my paperback today. I have questions about the ebook cover resolution, it seems different than the double spread images or even the title page in the front matter. KDP suggests a portrait resolution of "2,560 pixels in height x 1,600 pixels in width" but my paperback cover includes the back cover and is in landscape. Is there a difference between your cover resolution and your interior manuscript pages? Did you have to edit your paperback cover to fit into a specific ebook resolution? Also, do you include your back cover for ebooks? Danke schön.
Hi Tav! I'm so happy to hear that my videos have been so helpful. Our ebook covers will differ from our paperbacks and hardcovers in that it will have to be the front only. So all you would have to do is essentially crop away the spine and back cover, and only use the front part. I personally always keep the resolution the same. I so hope this helps. Happy Friday!
@@EeviJones Thanks again, this was super helpful. Have a wonderful weekend!
Eevi, what dimensions are your spread pages and your cover for your ebook? Thanks.
They are the same dimensions that I use for my images for the interior of my hardcover and paperback. To calculate those, you can use my tool right here. I so hope this helps - www.eevijones.com/illustration-template-generator/
Hi Evie, I watched your video the same day I hired a company to convert my book to eBook. They were gracious to refund the $800. I used your tip to make all pages the same size and it looks amazing. HERE IS MY QUESTION/PROBLEM AND IT'S HOLDING ME BACK. If my reader selects Landscape, it looks great. If my reader selects Portrait it is microscopic. If I select Landscape/Double image for my book, is this what will automatically show for my customer? Or will they have to set their e-Reader to landscape?
Ohhh, that's absolutely fantastic, Laura! I'm SO glad you were able to format your own ebook and receive a refund! If we select the double image setup, it should automatically show up like this. And most readers will also intuitively turn their e-reader, if they see a double spread like this. I so hope this helps!
Hi,
Thank you so much for your videos!! Are you able to creating a working Table of Contents using KKBC?
You're so very welcome! Unfortunately, KKBC doesn't offer any TOC features.
This is all really great content, thank you! I am curious if you or anyone else has come across this issue - I had someone create a file for me and it was KPF and I realized I need a different format in order to advertise (as somehow their format isn't compatible the e-reader?) so it required Fixed format (MOBI I believe currently). I had this one created and now am getting an error that KDP won't allow this different format. I can't remove the ebook from the title/series as far as I know and I am now worried that I need to archive the entire title and re-do the paperback, since they are all linked....have spent so much time trying to research this...
Hi Kim. You shouldn't have to archive your paperback. If you go into your KDP dashboard, you should be able to delete your ebook, so that you can try to upload it again.
Do you know if draft2digital accepts childrens picture books? Thanks!
For the ebook, can the steps you mentioned be done from a pdf file if I already have that completed or should I ask my illustrator to go back and create the jpgs?
We would need image files. It's also always a good idea to request image files + the source files whenever we are working with an illustrator! I hope this helps!
When I put the mobi format into Calibre and then convert it to EPUB it seems to only show the cover... Is there a way to check that the Mobi file from KDP properly downloaded it all? @EeviJones
Hi Eevi. I was not clear on one thing...what size should my images be? If my paperback is 7x10, and I want the ebook images in portrait orientation, should the jpgs just be 7x10 (provided there is no need for bleed)? What size will be optimal for better display on all devices? Thanks in advance.
Hi Anthony! When putting my ebooks together, I simply use the same images I used for my print copies. So if your trim sizse is 7x10 inches, then your images would probably be around 2100x3000 px at 300 DPI. When it comes to ebooks, we won't have to worry about bleed, but if your images include any bleed allowances, you can simply use those sizes as well. I hope this helps. I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year!
Hi Eevi, whenever I convert my mobi file to epub using both calibre and storyorigin converter, the images doesn’t display correctly (either in pieces or can only see a portion and not the full images). Do you ever had a problem like this and how to fix it?
I personally haven't had any trouble using this tool. That being said, Calibre has a lot of options to fine tune the conversion process. So I went ahead and copied a link to Calibre’s instructional page. I so hope this will help you figure out why you’re having trouble. manual.calibre-ebook.com/conversion.html
Hi Eevi. Have you noticed any quality differences with the online previewer vs the Kindle Previewer? I recently uploaded my ebook, and when I click “launch previewer” online, the text looks a bit pixelated. If I upload it in the Kindle Previewer or preview it in Kindle Create, it looks great. I’m wondering which previewer is more accurate.
I agree! The quality really does seem quite different between the different previewers. Whenever I upload my own books, it always seems that the previewer directly in KDP works best for me. But even if it is a bit pixelated for you there, but looks great in other previewers, I'd go ahead and publish it, and then download it via Amazon to see what it looks like 'live.' Remember - we can always upload updated versions. I so hope this helps. Have such a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year!
Hi Eevi, I have another company publishing the paperback and hardcover versions of my children’s book. I’d like to tackle the ebook version on my own. Should I wait until they launch my other two versions first before I add the ebook version? Will the e-book version appear with my other two options? Also, do I need an ISBN number with the ebook?
Thank you for all your help and encouragement! Angela
Hi Angela! We usually won't need an ISBN for our ebook (ruclips.net/video/mqkm8NI23hE/видео.html). As long as your different formats are set up under the same account, they should all appear on the same sales page over on Amazon. And whether or not you should wait or publish all formats together very much depends on your marketing strategy. Personally, I like to launch with an ebook option, simply because it is more cost effective for my launch team, and because it allows us to set up ebook promotions during the launch period. I so hope this helps, Angela! Happy launching!
@@EeviJones Yes, thank you for your help!
Do we need a separate ISBN for the ebook? I purchased 10. One for paperback, hardcover, and future books. Do I need to use one and upload it to the back cover for my ebook?
Hi Cheryl! How are you? Using an ISBN for our ebook is optional. And I'm sharing a few more rules regarding ISBNs in these two videos right here: ruclips.net/video/mqkm8NI23hE/видео.html + ruclips.net/video/Yf0amdS3IVY/видео.html - I hope this helps!
@@EeviJones thank you!
how create this ilustrates?
Do you find it's better to import your pages as image files vs. using a PDF? I'm having so much trouble with my ebook. I uploaded my pages from a compiled PDF and everything seemed to work ok in the Kid's Book Creator app. It exported with no errors, but when I test it on my Kindle device I get an error message and I can't even open it. I converted it to an ePUB file, so I could email it to my iPad to try it on the Kindle app and that one looks like the pages are cut off all funky and I can only see the top left quadrant even thought I chose "landscape" and 1 image per page. Have you ever experienced this? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong!
Hi Diana! How are you? I hope you are well! When it comes to illustration-heavy books, I personally never use the PDF option for ebooks. If you're having trouble, I would encourage you to follow the steps I shared in the video.
@@EeviJones thank you so much! It’s a children’s book, so it’s definitely illustration heavy. I followed all your steps, including the jpg files, and now it looks great! (I’m not sure why that makes a difference, but just glad it finally worked after fighting with Kindle Kid’s Book Creator for hours. 😅🫣🫠)
Thank you so much for the info you’ve shared! I wasn’t even going to do an ebook, but now I see why it’s important! Your channel is so helpful! 🩷
Eevi, I have made several attempts to get past "where do you want to save your book?" The continue button is greyed out. Do you know why?
Hi there! You will want to make sure the folder you want to save it to is empty! I so hope this helps!
@@EeviJones yea I tried that and still nothing. Have no idea what it is. I cross - checked my computer and search engines all good. I just did decided not to use it. It’s an 8-12 years old book and really little illustration. Chapters have icon images so running it though flowable … epub file was fine. I would prefer double spacing but the programs don’t do that.
Is there an update about mobi? I have been running in circles. Going to attempt our instructions😊
Hi Mell! There has been no update. Hopefully those instructions were helpful! Have such a great day!
@@EeviJones I found the kids book creator and got it made!
But probably hiring somone to do Epub because it is not working.
I started with a mobi file but the pages were blank for anyone who tried to access it via Kindle app. Decided to start over & create another version via Kindle Create app. That one worked across all platforms. Hopefully this helps someone. And thanks Eevi for your videos! I've learned so much from you & with your advice, my new book is a #1 New Release in 4 categories this week! ☺
Where do you find your images for your children’s stories ??
Hi Eryka! How are you? I hire illustrators for the illustration of my children's books.
@@EeviJones Smart, I just published my two journals but it takes too long to be published in kdp
How to enable Enhanced typesetting, text to speech , word wise etc?
