Mercury was used to “treat” syphilis for many years… I kind of see how they made the connection to acne. Oddly, the sulfur alone probably would have helped acne!
When I was a kid you could buy mercuric chloride as an antiseptic.
this is my favourite time of year! I frequently achieve that "glow-y eyed look" by accidentally stabbing myself in the eye with a mascara wand. works every time lol
Haha, I suppose that's one way to do it! 🤣
I achieve that look by stabbing myself with eyeliner while me and my best friend from work laugh about while I simultaneously laugh and cry at The same time
Well now I know why I haven't been looking my best lately; my pantry is devoid of lead and mercury...
I have a book from 1886 that says to brush your teeth with borax and remove freckles with mercuric chloride and corrosive sublimate
Your video prompted me to do a quick Google search for the first cosmetic safety act. There was one in 1938 (US) but it was mainly concerned with labeling. The first really comprehensive cosmetic safety act was 2019(US)! That is very scary!
I, too, am more of a Charlie Brown Halloween kind of person. I used to have an orange shirt in th 90s that I called my Great Pumpkin shirt. I still watch it every year.
13 recipes couldn't have been a coincidence on a video like this lol !
I just love your videos.
There were so many moments that I just had to cringe. Lead and Mercury and turpentine… OH MY!
Kate: "Oh look! It's time for some more mercury!"
I love your sense of humour.
I remember an orange liquid ointment with a silvery sheen for scratches and “boo boos” called methylate or mercurochrome, you can guess what the active ingredient was. And on open skin! 😱
Ingestion of small amounts of arsenic to make the skin look pale and like porcelain. Also lead in lipsticks up until fairly recently in the history of cosmetics.
I really enjoyed this, maybe you could make a part 2 👍😊
You just have to wonder if people poisoned themselves to death in the name of beauty.
I remember Mercurochrome.
Whoa, I only remember tincture of iodine, which is also orange.
Mercurochrome actually contains a methylated form of mercury which isn't as harmful. Many studys show that it's actually better for burns than the recommended treatment at the time. It's acrually quite useful and, when used correctly, harmless. You can trust me I'm a pharmacy tech from germany. (We don't have it since 2002 bit you can srill get it in the netherlands)
Makeup is FLAWLESS!!!
All of this makes me never want to use weird products on my skin and just stick to soap and basic moisturizers! LOL
In the 1930s gasoline contained lead. I'm sure that made it that much more useful as a shampoo. All these beauty treatments are completely insane. It makes me wonder how a many women survived
🖤!
