  • This week, I'm sharing a 1930s article about the joys of making cosmetics at home, as well as my top 10 list of beauty ingredients for historical recipes. This is just a sampling of the many possible ingredients you can use, but it's a good place to start building a collection. Extras are fun, but with just these few things you can make quite a wide range of products!

I had a hard time narrowing it down to just 10 for this video, as there are a lot of fun "extras" that I love but aren't strictly necessary. Runners up included cocoa butter, lanolin, and stearic acid (for making vanishing cream). Also a touch of yellow pigment can be helpful if you have yellow undertones and are making face powder. What are your go-to ingredients?

This is great, Kate! I really missed your readings of relevant historical articles along with funny silent-film clips. Now I'm inspired to get to work on my list of cosmetics projects!

I have a lot of allergies, and lately, because I have to wash my hands so frequently (I work in an elementary school library and handling the books makes my hands visibly dirty multiple times a day) and it's been so windy and rainy outside, I have been getting random itchy bumps on my hands and fingers. This happens every once in a while when my skin seems to react to things that are normally not an irritant, so I always keep at least one homemade moisturizer/salve on hand that is very simple and chemical free. Right now the one I have is equal parts of beeswax, olive oil, and coconut oil, melted together and scented with lavender oil. The original recipe that I followed also had tea tree oil in it, but that made me break out in hives, so now it's just the lavender! I find that it takes a while to soak/be rubbed into my skin, so I have to wear cotton gloves (or I just pull on a pair of clean socks over my hands and forearms) until my skin isn't oily so I don't make a mess, but it really seems to help.

I'm a big fan of Shea butter for lip balm myself (my go to recipe is 1 part beeswax, 1 part Shea butter, 2 parts olive or other liquid oil, all measured by weight). And I like activated carbon for black pigment

What can you substitute for borax , mineral oil and paraffin? 🤔🌺

Depends on the recipe and how it is being used. Borax is often used as a stabilizer in creams, but there are many cold cream recipes that don't need them or you can add in a bit of emulsifying wax instead. Mineral oil can be replaced with other liquid oils (such as olive oil), although these do have shorter shelf-lives (which is why manufacturers made the switch to mineral oil). Sometimes with paraffin you can use a mix of wax & oil, but again it depends on its original purpose in the recipe.
