    When I was first diagnosed with GAD, I told my mom, and she said, "you don't need therapy or medication, everyone has stress, you just have to deal with it like everyone else". Over time, she became more supportive, but I've often heard that repeated by others. It's kind of a combination of "it's not that bad" and "and I know how you feel" with a bit of "it's all in your head" mixed in. And when you try to explain what anxiety is like to someone who's never experienced it, to show them it's not "just stress", they disbelieve you or think you're exaggerating or overreacting. It really sucks because now you have someone who isn't hearing you, thinks you're weak, and now also thinks you're overdramatic.

    I've had so many worse things said to me when I was anxious, it's all about me!!! 🙃

    I've been told to stop letting the past run your life, or to stop holding onto and letting the past effect you. It's the past for a reason, but it's difficult to explain how I'm not letting it run me anymore but it does still have some effect on me to someone who doesn't understand

    The most common thing I`ve been told, was: If you have this shitty mood again, you can go straight back to home!
    so I always felt like a burden, that my emotions are unwanted and false.

    Mostly “suck it up” and “pull yourself up by your bootstraps”. I tell them if I could get rid of anxiety, don’t you think I would.

    This might be a topic for another video entirely, but whenever I‘m confronted with people who are insecure about their looks (weight, clothes, face, you name it), and I just can‘t agree with them, how should I react properly?
    I like your channel a lot, I discovered you through the podcast with Rene. I like that you seem to share some graphic elements with his channel 😃 Thanks for doing this!

    I also got "Just take a vacation." Sometimes I got no response at all, just ignored. I'm not sure which is worse

    When I brought up going to therapy to my dad, he at first wouldn't pay attention enough to hear what I'm saying, and then when he finally heard what I trying to convey to him....his words were "You kids these days, growing up we dealt with it, you know I was beaten and ran over by a lawnmower and I never complained or wanted therapy as much as you guys do nowadays....." blah blah blah, I toned out because that's his response every time I bring up feeling down/depressed. it's always oh well you aren't the only one and I've gone through worse so you'll be fine and then I just end up shutting down. He often ignores me, and I have to repeat myself a lot when i try and talk to him anymore, it's like I'm not even there half the time.

    She meant well, but my brother's girlfriend nearly told me flat out that I don't have GAD (despite being diagnosed with it). She then went on to give me a lecture about how "the spirit of fear is not of God" and that I need to pray away the anxiety.
    I'm a Christian, so part of how I cope with the anxiety issues is I pray, read the Bible, etc. Part of my big fear when I started going for therapy is that some of my family (or at least the ones I would care about more) would see this as me having a lack of belief, so being lectured by that by someone who I thought understood my issues was... pretty upsetting to me at that point.

    The ones I hear are anxiety symptoms, #1 do not overthink #2 why is this long-drawn-out #3 do not communicate the past/ no past talk. I discovered I have anxiety at age 19 and hearing these 3 does hurtful including invalidating to my anxiety

    Pretty sure this is why my x-wife left me. I suffer with Anxiety and didn't realise it and she thought I was depressed, I'm not even sure they are the same thing.

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 3 года назад +1

      They're not the same thing, but they often come together as comorbid issues. So dealing with anxiety can make someone depressed, dealing with depression can make someone anxious, and sometimes you just get both because they're similar in their neurochemistry. They're like the Buy 1 Get 1 Free of emotional disorders.

    I'm autistic and I have a boyfriend. But when I meltdown, he's being too emotional, but he can't help it, he is expressive. He says it's hard for him to deal with my crisis and I just have to find a solution to not do that kind of crisis, or I'm being childish and doing too much for that less... It's just that I don't need it, I don't need to hear that I'm a burden or that I'm exaggerating...

    Georgia, thanks so much for all that you do, raising awareness and educating about this, wish more people watched your videos. it took a cardiologist diagnosing me with an arrythmia for some of the people close to me to believe me that I was not well due to anxiety + ptsd and that it's not "in my head", my body was actually doing weird things (everything else was phyisically fine with my heart/blood tests so there was no other cause for it). when someone tells me to "think positively" and "man up" i swear, i sometimes want them to have a panic attack or flashbacks and then ask them if positive thinking helped them. i know it's mean but honestly... it's one of those things that if you haven't experienced it you just can't get yourself to believe how bad it actually is and how much energy it takes to just be functional (i.e convince yourself you're not dying/in danger, etc multiple times a day, every day). hopefully one day we will live in a world with more empathy but until then, we can support other sufferers as much as we can.

    What drives me nuts is when people watch me when I'm anxious because it shows on my face. And when they ask what are you thinking about or they try to tell me what my problem is, it gets to me.
