This is so helpful! Painting is my weakest area of cosplay for sure. I appreciate your hard work and that you take the time to put out vids like this :)
That's awesome! I actually often use the Liquitex Heavy Body Gold because it's gorgeous and metallic paints are the least pigmented paints in general, so I have less coats with that paint than any other /o Can't wait to see your next videos \O/
Thanks for the info, I am curious if a 2nd coat of the paints would make a big difference or the results are likely to be the same, obviously with the heavy body you are unlikely to need a second coat, but for those of us starting out, is it better to go with mid-price but 2 coats? Just trying to figure out the economics of it all, lol.
C B if you’re starting out check out the Deco Art paints they have up their pigment count and aren’t to bad for starters. But in my opinion painting with any type of heavy body paints are a big difference
Awesome video, Steve! Any idea if the Liquitex Heavy Body paints would work well having textile medium added to them? I did a lot of fabric painting on my last set of cosplays, using craft paint and textile medium. It worked and looks fine, but it took SO MANY LAYERS of paint! The higher pigmentation in Liquitex could really speed up the process of future fabric painting, if it plays nice with textile medium!
Awesome video just one question. Do you use the heavy body paint for washes too? Since most gets wiped away would it matter much if you used a cheaper paint?
Good Question! For washes, depending on the color I'm trying to achieve, I will sometimes break out the basics line and some of the cheaper Golden brand paints. But for most dark washes I will almost always use Liquitex Mars Black as the main color with various blues or reds mixed in so it's not a complete black
you should add "cadmium yellow opacity" to the tags. I paint pictures and I was looking through youtube for opaque yellow paint and I couldn't find a single video for months and now I just accidentaly stumbled upon your video while searching for collectable figurines reviews
If the weather is to cold to where I can't use spray paints and have to use acrylics, would I need a base coat after I use primer or could the matte color
you always need to seal the foam frist with something like plasti dip, flexbond, or modpodge. after that use what you have but if no primer is involved at all you def want heavy body acrylics of some kind otherwise you paint will crack or chip
Hi Steve, just wanna know if the acrylic paint you're using leave sticky surface when it dries. I've been using cheap Marie's acrylic paint back then and I realized it leaves the surface sticky and makes me hates using acrylic paint for a long time
So im confused if i were to paint EVA Foam would i still need to hit the prop/piece with plastidip or is that what (liquitex heavy body acrylic or liquitex basic series) are for? I guess what im trying to say is Plasti-dip is my priming stage right? So does the Liquitex act like a primer and paint process but just all in one?
No you are doing it right Plasti Dip is the bast layer to seal the foam. Then on top of that I add primer usually krylon and a rattle can of some kind for the inital color. Then I hand paint on top of all of that with the liquitex paints becaues of how vibrant they are and since the foam is sealed it doesn't absorb and waste paint
Okay let me see if i understand how to pastidip/prime/paint some piece of eva foam. So i finsih making what im working on and i hit it with plastidip which (seals the foam! i should also try to hit it with a heatgun before this right?) Then I find a krylon primer associated with my piece's main overall color for said prop, then hand paint it with Liquitex paints or paints in general. Also side not i actually watched your video with Bill Doran that helped explain your method for painting a little better, this one to be exact. ruclips.net/video/5KoFYTyP_XY/видео.html Also love your stuff keep up the Tuts!
I missed the step where after the plasti dip I should paint with rattle can. I already painted two layers of black heavy body wash. Should I stop and go back and paint a layer with a rattle can?
Katheryn Neudecker no I just do the rattlecan to lay down a base color. If you’ve already sealed with Plasti dip you can add the paint and it will be fine 👍
I think FX has it's place but on average it is very thin paint and requires multiple coats to cover. The metallics work almost like a glaze on top of other colors. Liquitex and Golden are still my go to paints just because of their ability to cover
Great tutorial Steve! =D
Hey Buddy, you killed this video, I think you've found your calling!
Very helpful! I always stop at paint because I I don't know very much about painting.
i am so stoked for the next video. TEACH ME STEVE!!!!!!
I love liquified been using it for years… Mars is my favorite color I use so much of it
Awesome tutorial Steve! That pigment demonstration was great.

The Craftaholic yes different mediums work well. Liquitex even makes a bunch of their own with different viscosities and textures

No Liquitex and Golden brands don’t have any sticky surface issues 👍
Good to know that! Thank you!

Lol at this craft paint blue.. they need to get it together
Why is liquitex basics so cheap in America???? It's £7 in the UK so not really worth it most if the time.
